    Do you know whats

on your credit re-port? Do you knowyour credit scores?

u dont, youre not, but now is a goodto better understandhey work, before you

go apply for that loan. Bywaiting to check your reportand scores until you want to

buy a house, you may dis-cover too late your financialhistory forces you into strictloan terms with high interestrates, or, worse, disqualifiesyou from getting any loan atall. How can you avoid this

    situation?Responsible past credit be-

    havior, a healthy credit score

and understanding your debtpicture all play crucial rolesin achieving your overall fin-ancial goals. So, reviewingyour credit report and know-ing your VantageScore cred-it score and how you com-

pare to others is essential.By reviewing your report, you can verify the informa-

tion in it, and take actions tocorrect any item that may re-quire it. If you have any neg-ative marks, now is the timeto take action to addressthose issues and increaseyour credit score.

    Waa-laa, I can do t

How many times doyou have to hearsomething beforeyou will actually try

it? I will know somethingand not be interested indoing anything about it untilthe time is right. Then all ofa sudden, I read about it orsee it and waa-laa its theperfect time to make thechange or to try somethingnew.

Its been a fun week read-ing all the New Year resolu-tion articles attempting tonudge us into making anoth-er healthy change this year.I want to tempt you with to-

days article which is simplygoing to be a list of sugges-tions compiled from variousarticles and my own preach-ing. Who knows it might betoday when youll get thatwaa-laa about changing asingle habit.

Eat breakfast every day. Itrevs up your metabolism, itsatiates your hunger from anall night fast and it protectsyou from over eating later inthe day.

Park your car in the lastspot in the lot. All those ex-tra steps add up and count.

Stop drinking soda andjuice. The calories thatdrinks bring in can often bethe part of your diet that ishindering your weight loss.

Make an appointment withexercise and write it on yourcalendar.

Eat an apple a day (or anorange, a pear, a banana, etc.)

Monitor what you eat. Many studies show that peo-ple who write down whatthey eat are more successfulat dieting.

Take the stairs instead ofthe elevator or escalator. Ev-ery step counts.

Wear a pedometer, whichwill help you understandyour true activity every day.

Pack your lunch as oftenas possible. This gives youthe opportunity for packing ahealthy lunch and savingmoney.

Drink a large glass of wa-ter first thing in the morningand before every meal.

Stretch every day, wheth-er you are at the gym or sit-ting in front of the television.

    Upgrade your salads to

dark, leafy greens (kale, ra-dicchio, arugula or endive). This adds vital nutrients likefiber, calcium, vitamin C,iron, folate and beta-caro-tene to your plate.

Keep a supply of healthysnacks available. Individualportions of cheeses, al-monds, fruit or nutritionbars are good choices forthat 4 oclock hunger.

    Ice fishing: a cold truth

ve been watchingice fishermen formany years and Idid some ice fishing

ake outside of mye town in Montana a few

    . Mostly we played pok-

d occasionally pulled upne to see if wed caught

hing. Didnt catch much,ad a good time.e winter, while visiting

ds in Minnesota, I didice fishing with a. Their icehouse was

d onto the ice in theplace for several years.

s completely dark in-They saved their egg-s, which they crushedd poured onto the lakethrough the hole in the

which was as long aside as the fish housebout 18 inches wide.e eggshells lying on theed below that darkprovided a light back-

nd. When a fish swamt, you could see itsand plunge the fishinginto it. I caught one, I

remember what it was,s I recall, it was aroundso inches in length.

y brother had a ranch inana on the shoreline on

    on Ferry Lake. We

watched a lot of fishermenon the lake on the coldest, windiest days of the winter. Most of them didnt use anicehouse. Theyd drive theirpickup to the area whereother fishermen were catch-ing fish and pull their equip-ment on a sled to where theywanted to fish. Theyd drillseveral holes in the ice andset their short fishing poleswith a tip up rig at each hole. They would visit with oneanother or sit on an over-turned bucket watching thetip ups. When a fish took thebait, the tip up flag would

snap up and theyd pull upthe fish. Sometimes theydbe busy as heck re-baitingand catching. Other timestheyd sit for long periodswith nothing to do.

A friend of mine loves toice fish. He is a little inde-pendent minded and doesntalways go where everyoneelse goes. He had his honeyholes, where he prefers tofish. The lake is on the Mis-souri River, which has warmsprings here and there. He

sunk his pickup in the laketwo years in a row. He stillgoes ice fishing.

I see ice houses poppingup around here since theweather finally got winterlike. I know how enjoyableice fishing is, and its a greatway to spend time with yourfamily and friends.

Just remember to be care-ful and be aware of the thick-ness of the ice. If it is lessthan 4 inches thick, stay offit. 4-6 inches should be safe

    for ice fishingand walking

    single file. 6-10 inches, a.t.v.s

    and snowmobiles are proba-

    bly okay. 10-16 inches, small

    cars and pickups should be

    safe, 16inches or more,

    larger pickups and cars may

be okay, if it is good, clear,

    solid ice. Remember, its ice,

    not solid grocareful.
