Sault Area Hospital has a long

and storied history in Sault

Ste. Marie and remains an

important cornerstone in the

community. The hospital

began as two community

hospitals on Queen Street -

the Sault Ste. Marie

General Hospital Inc. and

the Plummer Memorial

Public Hospital, forming a

partnership in 1993. In 2001,

the provincial government

announced support for a new

hospital in the north end of

Sault Ste. Marie and the

formation of a single hospital

corporation—Sault Area

Hospital.

From 2002 to 2007, planning

was underway to build a new

facility. The new

hospital was the

largest public

construction project

in the history of Sault

Ste Marie.

An official

groundbreaking

ceremony was held in

August 2007.

Construction

followed and the new

building was

delivered ahead of

schedule and on

budget.

On March 6, 2011 the new

Sault Area Hospital officially

opened as the first-ever

patients moved into the

state-of-the-art facility.

In July 2010, SAH participated in the

annual RotaryFest Parade. The blue

and white float delivered the

message Dreams Do Come True and

We’re Moving March 6, 2011. Senior

leaders, the Board Chair, staff,

physicians, volunteers and children

accompanied the float. Community

support proved that Dreams Do

Come true, helping to raise over $29

million for the new hospital build!

Ron Gagnon, SAH President and Chief Executive Officer "Words alone cannot adequately express what this new facility and equipment will mean to our staff, physicians and volunteers, who have been performing their everyday miracles despite the constraints of our current facilities. Their talents can now be complemented by these state-of-the-art tools, all to the great benefit of the patients we serve."

New Hospital, New Equipment The new hospital is 20 per

cent larger than the two

hospitals combined and

provides all existing health care

services along with the

addition of a radiation therapy

treatment satellite facility for

residents of Sault Ste. Marie

and surrounding area.

The introduction of radiation

treatment facilities will ensure

that the approximately 120,000

residents of Sault Ste. Marie

and Algoma Region have closer

-to-home access to this

advanced level care.

The new SAH has a clinical

service area that is one-third

larger than both old sites

combined. The emergency

department is also larger,

between double and triple the

size . There are improved

infection prevention and

control systems including

isolation rooms, dedicated

clean and soiled elevators and

a centralized sterilization

processing department.

Even with a new hospital,

there are still on-going

equipment needs. Within the

first year of moving to the

hospital the following new

equipment was procured for

enhanced patient care:

Ear, Neck and Throat

Equipment

Glidescope

Incubator for NICU

Ortho Surgical Equipment

Renal Dialysis Equipment

Spider Limb Positioner

Over the years, the

greenhouse has been

supported by the Horticultural

Society and school programs.

The greenhouse is a wonderful

example of a true community

partnership that will promote

the well-being of SAH’s mental

health patients.

The Mental Health

Program’s

greenhouse was

relocated from its

former home at the
