In this presentation the sea transport will be highlighted, and in particular the conditions related to high speed vessels. However,

some of the evaluations will also be valid for other types of seatransport, like ferries.

Fosen Trafikklag operates 6 High Speed vessels in some of the areas with the most severe weather

conditions in the world.

Our goal is to arrange for a transport which givesmaximum SAFETY, RELIABILITY and COMFORT.

Dangerous Areas

Last February Fosen Trafikklag experienced an accidentwhere a window on one of our high speed vessels were

broken from an unexpected wave in one of the areas identifyed as a ”dangerous” area.

Then, what can Fosen Trafikklag do?• Firstly, Fosen Trafikklag must provide safe, reliable and

comfortable transport.

• Secondly, the sailing regulations give restrictions for operations related to the weather conditions (the speed should be adjusted in accordance with the wave hight).

• Thirdly, Fosen Trafikklag as a serious operator must ensure that it operates within the given restrictions.

• Then Fosen Trafikklag is looking for means of support which can help meeting the requirements, ie. tools which can help making decissions related to the transport.

• Which means that we in this context are looking for reliable weather forecasts, information about sailing conditions (waves, wind, currents..) and support to evaluate the comfort level.

•Environmental conditions are important for operating high speed vessels•How to get this information available for those in charge?

•DNMI, the Norwegian Met. Office, provides weather forecasts for the Norwegian coast, including a special Maritime forecast for the Stad area.

As Fosen Trafikklag is situated in Mid-Norway and knowing that the forecast not necessarily will become the reality – This is not enough for us!

We are therefore looking for what can be done additionally.

In Spain, the Harbour Authorities (Puerto del Estado) is operating a weather forecast and real time data system for

improved safety and increased regularity.

The buoy system is delivered by the Norwegian company - OCEANOR

Examples of output from this system, which among others show that forecasts (line) may differ from observations (squares).

In Greece, a similar system as the system in Spain is running, the POSEIDON system

The buoy system is delivered by the Norwegian company - OCEANOR

Then maybe in a short time our high speed vessels can get this kind of information underway, supporting the decisions to be taken,

ensuring SAFETY, RELIABILITY and COMFORT
