It is important for students to spend 20 minutes each night independently reading. They should be reading their Lexile-Level library book, homework
activities, or any other reading material they are interested in. Research shows students who read 20 minutes per day increase their fluency and
comprehension skills.

ELA Focus Standards: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a
text (including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (RL4)
Compare/Contrast treatment of similar themes and topics (ex: opposi-tion of good/evil- patterns of events (the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures; (RL9)
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text; (RI1)
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text (RI2)
Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text including what happened and why based on specific information in the text (RI3)
Determine the meaning of general academic language and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or sub-ject area; (RI4)
Describe overall structure (chronology, comparison, cause/effect, prob-lem/solution) of events ideas concepts , or information in a text or part of a text; (RI5)
