MAYA LIN ARCHITECT OF MEMORY

As is her habit, architect Maya Lin stayed away from the

crowds—and the limelight. She stood behind the tinted

windows of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery,

Alabama. Outside, hundreds of visitors arrived at the site for

the opening of the Civil Rights Memorial, which Lin designed.

‘‘I like standing back quietly,’’ Lin said. ‘‘You create your

message, and then it is out there on its own.’’

Lin’s message can be found in the memorial’s exhibits. This

memorial honors those who died fighting for equality during

the civil rights movement. Some visitors reached out to touch

the names of loved ones carved into a black granite disk. Their

faces were wet with tears. ‘‘I’m so thankful,’’ said Sarah Salter,

Imitating nature has become popular in

building machines. This is especially true

among those trying to create the next

generation of robots. Why? When it comes to

solving really difficult design problems, nature

has a billion-year head start.

Going Buggy

Most people think that cockroaches are nasty

pests. But Roy Ritzmann has observed a lot that

he loves about them. “They’re fast. They’re agile,”

Ritzmann says.

The latest robots look like insects. How may they help us one day?

In The Swim Joseph Ayers holds up a lobster. It inspired his invention, RoboLobster, shown half-built in tank.

TrickyTrickyTalesTalesQuestions about nature and how

the world works have been around

forever—and so have the stories that have

helped provide answers. Trickster tales

were created in the days before science

made events like tornadoes and floods

understandable. These stories, whose main

characters use their wits to get what they

want, helped to explain nature and the

world around us.

Meet the TricksterWhat is a trickster? A trickster is a type of

character that appears in many different

stories, but doesn’t always have the same

name or even the same body. Usually a

male, he is often an animal with human

features, such as a coyote, fox, tortoise, or

spider. The name “trickster” can be tricky.

He isn’t always tricking others—sometimes

he is the foolish one being tricked. A Havasupai storyteller

In 2005 Mother Nature proved just how

powerful she can be. In the United States,

one of the worst hurricane seasons

pounded coastal areas. Katrina, the strongest

hurricane that year, slammed the Gulf Coast.

The violent hurricane destroyed parts of

Mississippi and Alabama, and it flooded the

city of New Orleans.

In South Asia, citizens began the year

rebuilding after a tsunami destroyed coastlines

from southern India to the island nation of

Indonesia. On December 26, 2004, more than

200,000 people were killed in the tsunami, and

millions were left in need of help.

A Dream Comes True

Most kids love recess, but for Hannah Kristan, it

was her least favorite part of the school day.

“I never got to do anything except sit there,”

she recalls.

Hannah was born with a disease that kept the

bones in her back from forming properly. She

uses a wheelchair. Sadly, for kids like her, most

playground equipment is off limits. In fact, Hannah

is one of 5 million kids in the United States who

cannot use traditional playground equipment

because of some type of disability.

Why do ALL kids need a place to play?
