This report is designed to provide details about where your water comesfrom, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. This report is a snapshot of last year'swater quality. We are committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies.Do I need to take special precautions? Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than thegeneral population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons whohave undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants canbe particularly at risk from infections. Disinfection involves the addition of chlorineor other disinfectant to kill dangerous bacteria and microorganisms that may be in the water. Disinfection is considered to beone of the major public health advances of the 20th century.Water Conservation Tips: Did you know that the average U.S. household uses approximately 400 gallons of water per dayor 100 gallons per person per day? Luckily, there are many low-cost and no-cost ways to conserve water. Small changescan make a big difference – try one today and soon it will become second nature.

• Take short showers - a 5 minute shower uses 4 to 5 gallons of water compared to up to 50 gallons for a bath.• Shut off water while brushing your teeth, washing your hair and shaving and save up to 500 gallons a month.• Use a water-efficient showerhead. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and can save you up to 750 gallons a month.• Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.• Water plants only when necessary.• Fix leaky toilets and faucets. Faucet washers are inexpensive and take only a few minutes to replace. To check your toilet fora leak, place a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak.Fixing it or replacing it with a new, more efficient model can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

• Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered. Apply water only as fast as the soil can absorb it and during the cooler parts ofthe day to reduce evaporation.

• Teach your kids about water conservation to ensure a future generation that uses water wisely. Make it a family effort to reducenext month's water bill!

• Visit www.epa.gov/watersense for more information.Cross Connection Control Survey: The purpose of this survey is to determine whether a cross-connection may exist at yourhome or business. A cross connection is an unprotected or improper connection to a public water distribution system that maycause contamination or pollution to enter the system. We are responsible for enforcing cross-connection control regulationsand insuring that no contaminants can, under any flow conditions, enter the distribution system. If you have any of the deviceslisted below please contact us so that we can discuss the issue, and if needed, survey your connection and assist you inisolating it if that is necessary.

Source Water Protection Tips: Protection of drinking water is everyone’s responsibility. You can help protect yourcommunity’s drinking water source in several ways:

• Eliminate excess use of lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides – they contain hazardous chemicals that can reach yourdrinking water source.

• Pick up after your pets.• If you have your own septic system, properly maintain your system to reduce leaching to water sources or consider connectingto a public sewer system.

• Dispose of chemicals properly; take used motor oil to a recycling center.• Volunteer in your community. Find a watershed or wellhead protection organization in your community and volunteer to help.If there are no active groups, consider starting one. Use EPA’s Adopt Your Watershed to locate groups in your community, orvisit the Watershed Information Network’s How to Start a Watershed Team.

• Organize a storm drain stenciling project with your local government or water supplier. Stencil a message next to the streetdrain reminding people “Dump No Waste - Drains to River” or “Protect Your Water.” Produce and distribute a flyer forhouseholds to remind residents that storm drains dump directly into your local water body.

Additional Information for Lead: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially forpregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated withservice lines and home plumbing. Otsego Township is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot controlthe variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimizethe potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. Ifyou are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water,testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or athttp://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

WATER QUALITY DATA TABLEIn order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of contaminants in waterprovided by public water systems. The table below lists all of the drinking water contaminants that we detected during thecalendar year of this report. Although many more contaminants were tested, only those substances listed below were foundin your water. All sources of drinking water contain some naturally occurring contaminants. At low levels, these substancesare generally not harmful in our drinking water. Removing all contaminants would be extremely expensive, and in most cases,would not provide increased protection of public health. A few naturally occurring minerals may actually improve the taste ofdrinking water and have nutritional value at low levels. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testingdone in the calendar year of the report. The EPA or the State requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than onceper year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not vary significantly from year to year, or the system is notconsidered vulnerable to this type of contamination. As such, some of our data, though representative, may be more than oneyear old. In this table you will find terms and abbreviations that might not be familiar to you. Joyce Ann SHATTUCKAGE 73 – KALAMAZOO, MI

Joyce Shattuck, belovedwife, mother and grand-mother, passed awayMonday, June 17, 2013 inKalamazoo. Mrs. Shat-tuck was born August 17,1939 in Otsego to Robert

and Pauline (Bittenbender) Griffith andhad been a lifelong resident of the area.For many years she was employed withthe Lake St., Kalamazoo and PlainwellBurger Chefs. She had many fond mem-ories of her friends and co-workers there.Joyce had been active in Boy Scouts, GirlScouts and Little League. In her leisuretime she enjoyed bowling, fishing and theLittle River Casino. On February 24, 1956in Otsego she married Raymond Shat-tuck, who survives. Also surviving are twodaughters and two sons, Debra (Chuck)Rheautt of Baltimore, MD, Michael Shat-tuck of Lansing, Karen Young of Parch-ment and Raymond P. Shattuck and dearfriend Peter Pappas of Bennington, VT;five grandchildren; two great-grandchil-dren; two sisters, Paula (Tom) Stevensonof Otsego and Pat Carpenter of SpanishFork, UT; and an uncle, Ebby Griffith ofDelton; many nieces and nephews. After grad-uating from Otsego High School in 1952she attended Ford’s School of Nursing inDetroit. Rosie was an excellent cook andeveryone enjoyed sitting at her table. Shewas a member of the Allegan Congrega-tional Church. In her leisure time she en-joyed knitting, reading and flowergardening. On January 10, 1953, in Ot-sego she married Hadley Cook, who diedin 2002. Also preceding her in death wereher parents and her son, Gregory Cook.Surviving are two daughters, NanetteRoot of Otsego, Christine Cook of Alle-gan; daughter-in-law, LouAnn Cook of Ot-sego; grandson, Austin Root (CarrieBarnhart) of Kalamazoo; granddaughter,Josie (Kristopher) Alderman of Otsego;and a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Al-derman. Joyce A. Berner passed away Sunday,June 16, 2013, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Bernerwas born October 9, 1942 in Plainwell toWayne and Louise (Mollitor) Livingston.She was a 1960 graduate of Otsego HighSchool and had attended Western Michi-gan University. Joyce began her career atKal Equip in Otsego and then stayedhome to raise her three children. Later inlife she was the proud owner of Looks inHair Design, a full service salon in Plain-well, for 20 years. Her main and most joy-ful purpose in life was her family. Sheloved being a wife, mother and grand-mother. Her love of travel took her andPhil all over the world. Joyce loved herkitties and almost always had a Siamesecat. She also was an avid flower gardenerwith beautiful roses and other perennials.Sons, Sean and Brent, remember bakingcookies with her all the time. Chocolatechip was their favorite. In 1976 Joycenominated her mother-in-law, CatherineBerner, for the Mother of the Year Awardthrough WAOP radio in Otsego. She sub-mitted a letter explaining how wonderfuland giving Catherine was to her familyand others. Catherine raised 6 childrenand worked full time as a registerednurse. She won the contest and Joycewent on the radio to read the letter thatearned her the award. On July 22, 1962in Kalamazoo she married Philip Berner.They were longtime residents of Otsego,having lived for 50 years across the streetfrom Leighton’s Mill Pond and currentlyresiding in Royal Estates, Kalamazoo. In1992, Joyce was reunited with her firstson, Todd Albright. This included his wifeand two daughters. She was a member ofSt. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Otsego.In September 2011, 49 years after theyfirst pledged their love to each other, Philand Joyce renewed their vows at St. Mar-garet’s Church. Surviving are her hus-band, Philip Berner; daughter, Laurie(Berner) and Tim Andrus; sons, SeanBerner, Brent and Merri (Germain) Berner,Todd and Loyale Albright; grandchildren,Cameron and Marissa Andrus, and Lau-ren Albright; special cousins, Barb andWayne Davis; and special friends, Maryand Rick Beauchamp, Bob and SharonLombardini. Joyce was preceded in deathby her parents and granddaughter, Eliza-beth Albright. Mass of Christian Burialwith the Rosary recited was celebrated atSt. Margaret’s Church June 19, Rev. Fr.Gordon Greene celebrant. Burial followedat Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.Contributions in memory of Joyce may bemade to the Southwest MichiganAlzheimer’s Association.
