2. DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVICE UNDER TEST (DUT)

The DUT compresses and broadcasts video over cellular networks. It comprises of a harness,

module with eight cellular modems and a WLAN transmitter. The WLAN antennas are located

in the module and the cellular antennas are located to a mast above the user’s head.

All the cellular modems are identical Sierra Wireless MC7455 PCI Express Mini Card and they

are connected to identical antennas. Below are photos of the DUT illustrating how the DUT is

used.

The cellular antennas shown in the photos above are different than in the DUT. Photos of the

DUT antenna are shown in appendix A. Typical separation distance from the user’s head to the

closest antenna according to the manufacturer is 30cm.

The foreseeable body worn configuration is that the harness is body worn and the cellular

antennas are above the user’s head.

2.2 SAR test Exclusions

According to the manufacturer the radiating structure of WLAN and Bluetooth i.e. the antennas are located

22-25 cm away from the user thus the WLAN transmitter is not in the scope EN50566. The compliance with

EN 62311:2008 can be demonstrated by power density calculation.

Power Density is calculated by equation:

𝑆 =𝑃

4 ∙ 𝜋 ∙ 𝑅2

Where,

S = Power Density

P = Radiated Power

R = Distance from Observation Point to the Antenna

The reference levels in the Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC on public exposure to electromagnetic

fields are derived from the basic restrictions using worst-case assumptions about exposure. If the reference

levels are met, then the basic restrictions will be complied with the product. The reference levels are shown in

table below

Based on power density calculations at distance of 20cm, the power density of the device is below the limit

and the result is PASS.

Dasy52 near field scanning system, manufactured by SPEAG was used for SAR testing. The test system

consists of high precision robotics system (Staubli), robot controller, computer, near-field probe, probe

alignment sensor, and a phantom containing the tissue equivalent material. The robot is a six-axis industrial

robot performing precise movements to position the probe to the location of maximum electromagnetic

field.

4.2 Phantoms

The phantom used in SAR tests was an ELI phantom, manufactured by SPEAG. ELI phantom is

used for compliance testing of handheld and body-mounted wireless devices in the frequency

range of 30 MHz to 6 GHz. ELI is fully compatible with the IEC 62209-2 standard and all known

tissue simulating liquids.

4.3 Tissue Simulants

Recommended values for the dielectric parameters of the tissue simulants are given in IEC

62209-1. The dielectric parameters of the used tissue simulants were within ±10% of the

recommended values in all frequencies used. A liquid compensation algorithm was used to

correct the deviation of the liquid from target parameters. SAR testing was carried out within

24 hours of measuring the dielectric parameters. Depth of the tissue simulant was at least 15.0

cm from the inner surface of the flat phantom.

5. TEST PROCEDURE

The device was set to transmit using maximum power with a communication tester. As the

device has 8 identical modems with 8 identical antennas, one modem and antenna were

selected for full SAR testing and worst-case checks were done with other antenna set 1

antennas. LTE bandwidth and resource block configuration used in the testing was selected

based on conducted power measurements. The measured SAR results were scaled to

correspond the maximum specified power level of the DUT.

Test procedure steps:

1) Modem A was fully tested with main antenna 1.

2) Maximum SAR results found in step 1 from low and high frequency bands were tested

with modem A and main antennas 2, 3 and 4.

3) Simultaneous transmission analysis was made for antenna set 1 by summing up maximum

SAR result found for each main antenna 1,2,3 and 4.

4) The DUT has two identical antenna sets placed in a mast on top of each other. The total

simultaneous transmission analysis was made for the antenna sets by multiplying the

simultaneous transmission SAR for antenna set 1 by factor 2. This is a conservative

approach as the calculation assumes that the antenna sets would be co-located i.e. both

would be at a separation distance of 5 cm from the user. In real use the antennas set 2

would be further away from the user than the antenna set 1. Thus, the SAR caused by

antenna set 2 would be lower than the calculation assumes.

5.1 Test Positions

5.1.1 Body-worn 5cm Configuration

The device was placed below the flat phantom. The distance between the antenna and the

phantom was kept at 5 cm. Photos of the test positions are presented in appendix A.

5.2 Scan Procedures

First, area scans were used for determination of the field distribution. Next, a zoom scan, a

minimum of 5x5x7 points covering a volume of at least 30x30x30mm, was performed

around the highest E-field value to determine the averaged SAR value. Drift was

determined by measuring the same point at the start of the area scan and again at the

end of the zoom scan.

5.3 SAR Averaging Methods

The maximum SAR value was averaged over a cube of tissue using interpolation and

extrapolation.

The interpolation, extrapolation and maximum search routines within Dasy52 are all based

on the modified Quadratic Shepard’s method (Robert J. Renka,” Multivariate Interpolation

of Large Sets of Scattered Data”, University of North Texas ACM Transactions on

Mathematical Software, vol. 14, no. 2, June 1988, pp. 139-148).

The interpolation scheme combines a least-square fitted function method with a

weighted average method. A trivariate 3-D / bivariate 2-D quadratic function is

computed for each measurement point and fitted to neighboring points by a least-

square method. For the zoom scan, inverse distance weighting is incorporated to fit

distant points more accurately. The interpolating function is finally calculated as a

weighted average of the quadratics.

In the zoom scan, the interpolation function is used to extrapolate the Peak SAR from the

deepest measurement points to the inner surface of the phantom.
