Top: Anna Kenan (left) and Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens cut the ceremonial

ribbon to officially open the footbridge across the Eno River, thereby connect-

ing the Riverwalk to the Occoneechee Speedway Trail. Kenan’s mother, Kim

Walsh, recently died after a bout with chronic pain, and the family donated

money obtained through her life insurance policy to help fund the bridge.

Walsh often walked the trails to help cope with the pain, and the family felt it

was a good way to honor her legacy.

New Footbridge connecting Riverwalk to Speedway Trail

opens in HillsboroughBY KELSEY BARHAMN e w s o f O r a n g e A s s i s t a n t E d i t o rk . b a r h a m @ n e w s o f o r a n g e . c o m

On Friday, July 22, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held

for the oficial opening of the new pedestrian footbridge

connecting the town’s Riverwalk to the east to the historic

Occoneechee Speedway Trail in the west. The bridge, which spans 95 feet over the Eno River, can

be accessed from South Cameron Street or from Elizabeth

Brady Road. It is also a vital link in the larger Mountain-

to-Sea trail that will direct travelers towards Durham.

Classical American Homes Preservation Trust and the

Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation, which owns the

Occoneechee Speedway Trail and Ayr Mount historic

sites, installed the bridge that is also made of the same

design and material as the two Riverwalk bridges near

Gold Park and the downtown entrance.According to Bill Crowther, Ayr Mount Site Manager,

the footbridge project was about a three year project from

start to inish collecting the funds and completing all the

overhead processing, but the plan was conceived all the

way back in 2003 as part of Ayr Mount’s Master Trail

Plan. “We had already built Poet’s Walk in 1999,” Crowther

said. “And then we did the Speedway Trail in 2002.

So then we had to igure out how to plan for the entire

property with walking trails connecting everything. So

we had Charlie Berger do our Master Plan in 2003, which

included what we’re doing, because that’s kind of phase

three, which we’re into now.”The next phase will eventually see another bridge built see FOOTBRIDGE page 2
