"Ministry of Road Transport and Highways hasdecided to extend the validity of Fitness, Permits,Licenses, Registration or other documents underMotor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor VehicleRules, 1989 till the 30th of December 2020," said thestatement.

It has further advised that all concerned docu-ments whose extension of validity could not or notlikely be granted due to the lockdown and which hadexpired since February 1, 2020 or would expire by De-cember 31, 2020, may be treated to be valid till De-cember 31, 2020. —Agencies

More car owners arelikely to offer theirvehicles for sale,said executives atused car resellers,

due to a mix of factors such as joblosses, salary cuts and continuingwork from home routines.

This could help narrow thedemand and supply gap for usedcars and two-wheelers which haswidened as more people opt for pri-vate modes of transportation onfears of catching infection.

“Once the moratorium gets overon 31 August, we will definitely seemore supply of used cars in themarket,” said Amit Jain, chief exec-utive officer and co-founder, Car-Dekho, an auto portals run by Gir-nar Software Pvt. Ltd. “Thedemand for used cars has seen asharp rise as people are increas-

ingly looking for affordable vehi-cles for personal mobility whileavoiding public transportationamid the coronavirus scare”.

“Besides our 50 Gaadi stores, weare also conducting home inspec-tions for acquiring pre-owned cars.We see owners selling an average of4,000 pre-owned cars per month

through our platform as against3,500 cars before the pandemic,”Jain said.

CarDekho plans to invest $20million in the used car business thisfiscal to grow its operations and tapthe demand momentum. It plans toopen 250 franchise stores this year,and to over 1,000 retail locations by

The Adani Group is in talksto acquire the GVKgroup’s stake in Mumbai

International Airport Ltd(MIAL), PTI reported on Mon-day.

The group controlled by bil-lionaire Gautam Adani plans toacquire the 50.5 % stake held bythe GVK Group in MIAL and afurther 23.5% from GVK’sminority partners—AirportsCompany South Africa (ACSA)and the Bidvest group, giving itmajority control of the second-busiest airport in the country,according to the report. Theremaining 26% stake is held bystate-run Airports Authority ofIndia (AAI).

Initial talks between the twobusiness groups have begunand a preliminary announce-ment regarding the deal isexpected to be made in thecoming weeks, according toPTI.

The Adani Group had inMarch 2019 agreed to buySouth African company Bid-vest’s 13.5% stake in MIAL for₹1,248 crore, indicating itsinterest in running the airport.GVK, however,blocked the dealclaiming the rightof first refusal,although it wasnot able to exer-cise the right bymaking a match-ing offer.

In October,GVK agreed to sellits 79% stake in GVK AirportHoldings for ₹7,614 crore to theAbu Dhabi Investment Author-ity, Canada’s Public Sector Pen-sion Investments, and state-owned National Investmentand Infrastructure Fund.

GVK is expected to use theproceeds from this sale to retirethe debt obligations of its hold-ing companies and fend off atakeover battle for MIAL fromthe Adani Group. The agree-ment is, however, still to be exe-cuted. The Economic Times

reported on Monday that thisinvestor consortium has agreedto give a ‘carve-out’ to the pro-moters of GVK, the Reddy fam-ily, so as to allow them to sellstake in MIAL.

News reports of a possibledeal between GVK and Adanicome after the Central Bureauof Investigation last weekcharged the GVK Group withsiphoning off funds worth ₹705crore and causing a loss of ₹310crore to the exchequer byentering into fake work con-tracts on land given by the gov-ernment to MIAL.

The potential takeover alsothrows into question the futureof the proposed Navi Mumbai

airport project,where MIAL hadbeen the success-ful concession-aire. GVK, themajority partnerin MIAL, is negoti-ating the financialclosure for build-ing the ₹17,000-crore airport with

State Bank of India. Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL),

the Adani Group flagship, hasmeanwhile won the operationsand development rights over a50-year lease for the Ahmeda-bad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jai-pur, Thiruvananthapuram, andGuwahati airports, the firstround of privatization that washeld by the Union governmentin February 2019. AEL won thecontracts after offering to sharethe highest revenue-per-pas-senger with AAI.

“In the initial recovery phase, thedemand-supply gap has only wid-ened,” said Amit Kumar, head, OLXAutos India.

Kumar estimates that increased

supply of used cars after the mora-torium period ends will come fromcommercial as well as private sour-ces as people with weak financialprofiles may be forced to surrendertheir assets. “Company paid carsused as personal vehicles, vehiclesbought for mixed personal and

business reasons, andthose bought by smalltravel agencies maybe sold in the used carmarket after the mor-atorium ends. Thissegment constitutes15-20% of all usedcars,” Ashutosh Pan-dey, chief executiveofficer, Mahindra

First Choice Wheels Ltd said in aphone interview. The supply ofpre-owned vehicles will increaseover the next two to three monthsas banks are also likely to start tak-ing repossession of vehicles of loandefaulters after the end of the mor-atorium, he said.

This is in contrast to its largerreal estate strategy in India sofar, where the private equitygiant has acquired commercialoffice assets in partnership withvarious developers such asEmbassy Group, K RahejaCorp, Salarpuria Sattva Groupand Panchshil Realty.

Blackstone is the largestoffice owner in India with aportfolio of 118 million sq. ftacross 44 assets in six cities.Since its foray into the country,the company has invested over$15 billion across sectors suchas real estate ($7.8billion), privateequity ($6.9 bil-lion) and tacticalo p p o r t u n i t i e s($400 million).
