PRESS RELEASEVASARELY, SHARING FORMS 6 FEBRUARY - 6 MAY 2019GALERIE 2, LEVEL 6
The Centre Pompidou presents the first major retrospective in France to be dedicated to Victor Vasarely. Through three hundred works, objects and documents, the exhibition explores the world of Vasarely and showcases all the facets of the prolific creation of the father of optic art, presenting every aspect of his work from paintings, sculptures, multiples and architectural integrationsto advertisements and early studies.
The exhibition follows a chronological and thematic path through the major steps of his work,
from his artistic training in the wake of the Bauhaus movement to his final experiments inspired
by science fiction, via his project for a universal visual language and the ambition of art as a form
of social mass media.
Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) spent his childhood and early youth in Hungary and moved to Paris
in 1930, where he worked as a graphic designer in advertising before devoting himself fully to art after
the war. His abstract style, based on the observation of reality, would rapidly start
to integrate the quirks and disorders of vision. In the mid-1950s, he laid the foundations
for what would become known, a decade later, as Op Art. A key moment in the history of abstraction,
optical-kinetic art, based on a strictly scientific process, offered up unstable images in which paint
became an art of time as much as an art of space. At the same time, he worked to develop a formal
language to enable multiple makeovers in various situations, particularly in architecture.
Vasarely’s work was fully rooted in the scientific, economic and social context of the 1960sand 1970s. In addition to presenting a large range of works, some of which have not be exhibited for over fifty years, the exhibition also reveals the influence of Vasarely’s art in the popular culture of his era (in fashion, design, graphic arts, film and television, etc.), highlighting his key role in the psyche of the post-war boom years.

1. THE LEGACY OF THE AVANT-GARDES Having trained in the Mühely ("Workshop") in Budapest under Sándor Bortnyik, a former Bauhaus student,
Vasarely learned to adapt the language of modernism to commercial communication. After moving to
Paris in 1930, he worked in advertising as a graphic artist. His "plastic studies" from the time are marked
by this conception of effective form and prefigure the work to come. Similarly, the "Zebra" series begun in
the 1930s foreshadows the waves and vibrations of the kinetic period. Although an heir to the
constructivist tradition, Vasarely's art is also a perversion of it. Abandoning the literal use of form,
Vasarely used various illusionistic processes to highlight the pitfalls of vision and the ongoing
metamorphosis of the world. Very early on, this rational art asserted itself as a mannerist derangement.
2. GEOMETRIES OF THE REAL It was during the war years, spent reading scientific literature, that Vasarely's artistic ambition truly
asserted itself. Behind the three great cycles around which his work developed on the verge of the 1950s,
we can discern the structures underlying the real world, perceived in its great cycles as well as in its most
derisory manifestations. The contemplation of pebbles and objects rolled by the ebb and flow of the tide
generated the rounded forms that people the works of the "Belle-Isle" series. The networks of cracks on
ceramic tiles in a metro station inspired the contours of the blocks of colour in the "Denfert" series. Lastly,
in the "Crystal-Gordes" series, broken lines and acute angles transpose the crystalline and mineral forms
of the Luberon village perched on a rocky outcrop. Crystal, with its complex optical effects, becomes the
model for his painting in order to reflect the disturbance and strangeness of vision. These works also
provided Vasarely with an opportunity to focus on the core of a poetry based on instability and mobility.
3. ABSTRACT ENERGIES "Photographismes" and "Naissances" marked the reduction of Vasarely's language to black and white in
the early 1950s. The reversibility of positive and negative photographic images is one of the sources
of this development. With a view to a simple and logical aesthetic endowed with a great capacity
to transmit information, and in the context of the nascent cybernetics, the black/white opposition provided
an equivalent of binary language and oriented the creative process toward programming. In addition,
the contrasts between black and white generated optical phenomena that determined a dynamic
perception. There was nothing formalist about this exercise: Vasarely was attempting in this way
to translate the great energies of the universe. Carried by waves, vibrating in contact with particles, the
eye traverses energy fields and magnetic currents. It is no longer confronted with forms, but with forces.
The painting vibrates, flickers, scintillates in such a way that it cannot be perceived immediately, in a flash,
but through time. Vasarely was inventing what the next decade would call op art, one of the most
significant developments of geometrical abstraction since its appearance.
4. VISUAL ESPERANTO Vasarely developed a "plastic alphabet" in the early 1960s, consisting of a lexicon of six simple
geometrical forms embedded in squares of pure colour. Declaring "the convergence of all creative forms
toward a culture-civilization on a worldwide scale", the artist offers the globalized planet a visual and
universal language whose combinatory properties render it suitable to all adaptations, making it the
source of a veritable "planetary folklore". As of 1965, each of the six pure colours of the plastic alphabet
generated twelve to fifteen intermediary chromatic values. This new colour chart introduced particularly
refined shading effects into the contrasted and flickering mosaic of the works generated from the first
alphabet. In order to master the very many combinatory possibilities of this alphabet, Vasarely included
them in a systematic and computerizable set of permutations and progressions. "Complexity thus
becomes simplicity. Creation is now programmable", he wrote. This pre-digital abstraction thus revealed
its profound complicity with cybernetic thinking.
6
5. POP ABSTRACTIONHaving defined a vocabulary capable of undergoing various adaptations and declensions with the plastic
alphabet, Vasarely worked to disseminate his forms as widely as possible. This took different paths, particularly
that of multiplicity. Screenprints, little sculptures and posters testify to Vasarely's desire to expand art beyond
the institutional milieu. His immense popular success in the 1960s and 1970s no doubt surpassed his own
hopes. His forms were on display everywhere: in design and decoration, the fashion press and shop windows,
on the covers of books and magazines, on record sleeves and in television studios and films. The press adopted
the phenomenon: "Vasarely is being sold by the metre in department stores". To which Vasarely responded:
"I am not in favour of private possession of creations. I don't care if my work is reproduced on kilometres
of cloth! We have to create a multipliable art." The visual culture of a whole era adopted his images
unashamedly, a rare example of society taking ownership of an artist's language.
6. TOWARDS ARCHITECTUREIn 1954 the construction of the Caracas university campus offered Vasarely his first opportunity to give
concrete expression to his ideas on how to integrate art into the city, alongside Jean Arp, Alexander Calder
and Fernand Léger. The idea of a social art going hand in hand with the development of the "plastic
alphabet" found its logical expression in the utopia of a "Polychrome city of happiness" and, more
concretely, in the construction of many architectural integrations. The most famous of these appeared
during the 1970s: in the new building at Montparnasse station in Paris, in the headquarters of Renault
in Boulogne-Billancourt, on the façade of the building of the RTL radio station in Paris, and in the dining
room of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt. But it was in the Foundation bearing his name in
Aix-en-Provence that Vasarely gave concrete expression to one of his most audacious projects. Many
studies conducted in the 1960s and 1970s testify to the importance for Vasarely of the utopia
of the "Polychrome city of happiness", a veritable adaptation of his alphabet to mass architecture. For
Vasarely, buildings had truly become the place where he shared his forms, rather than walls of museums.
7. COSMIC DREAMSBetween science and fiction, the cosmos and its multiple dimensions provided the framework for the
formal effervescence of Vasarely's later work. According to the artist, the idea was to give shape to the
"worlds which, up until now, have escaped the investigation of the senses: the world of biochemistry,
waves, fields, relativity." Vasarely's poetic-scientific imagination is revealed in titles where words
encountered at random in geography atlases are replaced by references to "signals of worlds",
"metagalaxies", "interstellar landscapes", the "sound of quasars" and the "beating of pulsars".
His Multidimensional polychromies altered the modernist grid by introducing optical illusions of
the axonometric perspective which render the full and empty reversible. "Carried by the waves, I let
myself be swept forward now toward the atom, now toward the galaxies, passing through attracting and
repelling fields". With Vasarely the painting is, by turns, a spaceship, a teleportation machine and a means
of communicating with dimensions beyond our senses.

4. AROUND THE EXHIBITIONCONTEMPORARY SPOTLIGHTSVASARELY FOR ALLAfter a showing of Catherine Benazeth’s film Vasarely, l’illusion pour tous, there will be an open discussion
on the question of the value of this work in art history and contemporary aesthetics with exhibition
curators Michel Gauthier and Arnauld Pierre, art historians Nina Léger and Pauline Mari, writer Aurélien
Bellanger and artist Maxime Rossi. This contemporary
spotlight will illuminate the work of the op-art master, the paradoxical heir to modernism.

Graphic designer Fanette Mellier works with typography, layout and the printed object. Her graphic and
colourful world convinced the Centre Pompidou publishing division to entrust her with the task of paying
homage to Vasarely.
Fanette Mellier has devised a ‘spot the difference’ game, by breaking down ten of Vasarely's works into
two images, which appear to be identical but, in fact, 7 mistakes have been deliberately introduced into
one of them. The aim of the game is to locate them and place a small numbered sticker on them.
It's a great concept, particularly well thought out in terms of its design and production, for discovering
Vasarely's work in a fun way.
