INDIAN MYTHOLOGY

Page 4: 6. india quiz challenger

•  According to Hindu mythology, X went to Mount Kailash and prayed to Lord Shiva, who gave him a Jyotirlinga to take to his land, with the promise not to place the lingam any where else. In case that happened, the lingam would remain fixed on that spot forever. The gods, who were unhappy at the prospect of the divine lingam being established in the enemy kingdom, which would render them powerless against their adversary, worked a trick on X. He mistakenly handed over the lingam to a brahmin, who grounded it at Y. X did his best to uproot it but beyond breaking the tip he was unsuccessful.

• ID X and Y.• Bonus Points if you can name this holy place of worship for

the hindus.

• X is a young 21-year-old onion farmer in a tiny village called Talegaon Rohi.

• The village is in one of the most drought-stricken areas of Maharashtra, the kind of place where farmer suicides are as routine as 45 degrees Celsius temperatures and accepted with the same weary resignation.

• X shoulders the burden of supporting his family. And then, suddenly, the universe shifts. The young man's father dies, and the burden of supporting his family falls on his lanky 6 ft 4 frame.

• In 2012, looking for opportunities outside his village, he goes off and joins the army.

• An officer takes stock of his build, and suggests he try rowing. The young man swallows hard and gets into the boat.

• He knows that if he begins to do well at the sport, there is a chance for promotions, and monetary rewards, which he can send back home to his mother.

• Four years later, exactly four years after he picked up an oar for the first time, the young man comes to the Olympics, an international sporting event he has never heard of until a year before, as his country's sole qualifier in the rowing category.

The great Indian X crisis• Evolution has designated X to be the ultimate scavengers.

Enormous wingspans allow them to circle in the air for hours. Their beaks, while rather horrifying, are weak by bird standards, made to scoop and devour flesh.

• Only 20 years ago, India was inundated with X—flocks so enormous they darkened the skies. But by 1999, their numbers had dropped dramatically, due to a mysterious kidney ailment. By 2008, 99.9 percent of India’s X were gone. It was finally discovered that they had been killed by a drug called Y (a pain reliever along the lines of aspirin or ibuprofen). Indians revere their cows, and when a cow showed signs of pain, they treated it withY. After the animal died, X would eat the corpse. And though they boast perhaps the world’s most efficient digestive system, X cannot handle the drug.

• ID the banned drug Y and also X. (Part points)
