Iowa's Big Trees / How are these Big Trees measured? 1 The Iowa Big Tree Program is designed to locate the largest tree of various species in our state. The purpose is to give special recognition to big trees, focus our attention on trees in general, and to have a little fun in competition on the side.

Everyone is invited to join in on the search for Iowa's biggest trees. The owner and nominator will each receive a certificate of recognition and all bragging rights associated with finding or owning an official "Big Tree" of Iowa.

If you wish to nominate a tree, record the mea- surements on the applicationlnomination form located in the back of this book. Include the name, address and phone number of the owner and nominator. Also include a map of the tree's location and its species. Send the information to:

Iowa Department of ~atural Resources Forestry Division Wallace State Office Building Des Moines, Iowa 50319-0034

The Forestry Division will confirm the species and measurements if it is a possible champion. A check will be made with the National Big Tree Register, sponsored by the America Forestry Association, to determine if it may also be a national champion. Remember- if you wish to examine or measure a "Big Tree" on private land, please seek the permission of the landowner first.

Tree size is based on three measurements: cir- cumference, height and crown spread. A cham- pion is determined by total points contributed by the three measurements. (See pg. 1 1 for nomina- tion form.)

Circumference Measure around the tree trunk at 4 112 feet above groundlevel. If the tree forks at that point, the measurement is made below this where the circumference is least. Circumference counts one point for every inch.

Height This measurement is difficult but important for a nomination. An estimate of height can be ob- tained using a yardstick. First, pace off 100 feet from the tree. Next, hold the yardstick vertically, 25" from the eye. Sight the zero inch mark at the base of the tree. Next sight along the stick to the top of the tree and read in "inches" the tree's height. For every inch, the tree will have four f a t of height. This measurement counts one point for each foot of height.

I

Crown Spread This measurement is the difference from the end of the branches on one side of the tree through the trunk to the branch ends on the other side. Two measurements at right angles should be made and then averaged. This category counts for one-fourth point for each foot of an average crown spread.
