Teleconferencing-an alternative to face-to-face meeting

• Teleconferencing allows people in different locations to participate in meetings without the problems and expenses of travel.

• An audio conference- is a single telephone call involving three or more people at different locations

• A video conference- allows people in different locations to see video images of each other on a screen.

• People in different locations participate in meetings:- no costs: meals, accommodation, traveling, time

Teleconferencing Advantages• Reduces cost by

not buying airfares, hotel rooms and meals

• Saves time and energy in travelling.

• Used in business and distance education

Disadvantages• Lack of personal

contact.• Limits the

Messaging systems

A messaging system is used to send messages to people in different locations who may receive the message at a later time.

• The telephone system allows voice communication along telephone lines between people in different locations.

• A telephone answering system is a messaging system.

• It stores messages and allows a person to hear the message at a later time.

• -is a system of transmitting and reproducing documents over telephone lines.

• The fax machine scans a document and converts it into a bit-mapped image.

• PC equipped with a fax modem are capable of performing all the tasks of a fax machine.

Voice mail or V-mail

• Allows communications with other people by storing and forwarding spoken messages.

• The sender dials a v-mail number and records the message.

• It is digitally stored for the intended receiver.• To retrieve a message, you dial into the v-mail

system, enter an account number and password.• You can listen, delete, save or send message to

another person.

Electronic mail or EmailElectronic mail or Email

• Allows communication with other email users by sending and receiving electronic messages using a computer.

• It is correspondence(documents, text messages) transmitted between users’ mail boxes’ over a network:– Within an organisation’s internal network– Through the Internet

• An Address book:- is used to store email addresses. This saves time typing and avoids the problem of remembering addresses.

• A mailing list:- is a group of people who may want to receive the same message.

• A signature:- is several lines automatically appended to outgoing email messages.It may include an email address, Web site, graphic, occupation or telephone number

Electronic commerce-is the buying and selling of goods and services

via the Internet

• Allows people to purchase goods and services using a credit or debit card.

• Transfer money from the customer’s bank to the retailer’s bank account.– Customer swipes card using terminal.– Choose account (Saving, cheque, credit).– Enter PIN as password (security measure to

identify customer)– Terminal check PIN and availability of funds.– Transfer of funds from customer account to

supermarket’s account.

• The wireless Internet lets you browse Web pages from a mobile phone or PDA. Wireless Application Protocol makes it possible to surf on the go.

WAP- Bluetooth• Bluetooth is a new wireless way for

electronic devices to communicate with one another.

• It's wireless. When you travel, you don't have to worry about cables to attach all of your components.

• It's inexpensive. • You don't have to think about it. Bluetooth doesn't

require you to do anything special to make it work. The devices find one another and strike up a conversation without any user input at all.

WAP-The base unit• This is the base unit of a wireless

system used to connect workers with laptops.
