BIBLE BASIS

The parable of the good

Samaritan is a wonderful

example of how Jesus

wants us to treat others.

The Jews in Jesus’ time

hated the Samaritans

because they felt the

Samaritans had defi led

the Jewish faith by

intermarrying with people

of other religions. So for

Jesus to tell a story where

a Samaritan was the only

person to help an injured

Jew must have really hit

home to his listeners.

Use this parable to help

kids understand that they,

like the Samaritan in the

parable, should and can

help others—even those

people they normally

don’t consider their

neighbors or friends.

Help your kids see

that by helping others

without prejudice, they

are obeying and pleasing

Jesus.

Bible Focus: Luke 10:25-37

Discovery Point: Jesus wants us to help others.

Worship Response: Children will fi nd ways to help others, even if they aren’t close friends.

Key Verse: “And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ ” (Acts 20:35).

Welcome!

Supplies: CD player | TV/DVD player

1. Play CD/DVD “Into the Bible” (1) as kids arrive.

2. Gather everyone in the center of your meeting area. Explain that you’ll call out various characteristics and kids will group themselves accordingly. For example, have everyone who’s left-handed run to one corner of the room, and have everyone who’s right-handed run to a different corner. Then ask kids if they’d have trouble helping someone from the other group who needed help.

Continue grouping kids by characteristics. After each grouping, ask kids if they’d have trouble helping someone from the other group who needed help—doing homework, for example. Some characteristics you might use include:

• loves pepperoni on pizza or doesn’t,

• thinks math is a favorite subject or doesn’t,

• likes dogs or doesn’t,

• has a brother or sister or doesn’t.

3. Then start the DVD “Storm Countdown” (2) and turn the volume way up. Lead kids in counting along. Then

gather them near you, and SAY: I’m so glad you’re here today! We’re going to have fun and learn about our awesome God!

In our game just now, you formed groups with people who were like you in some way. In those groups, I asked if you

would help people in the other groups. Were you always willing to help? Let me see a show of hands if you were willing to help. Pause. Well, it looks like most of you would help. That’s good.

Have kids discuss the following questions in pairs, and explain their answers to their partners. After each

question, invite a few kids to share their answers with the rest of the large group.

TEACHER TIPBe careful not to

embarrass anyone.

Never group kids by

physical characteristics

such as height or weight.

• likes dogs or doesn’t,

• has a brother or sister or doesn’t.

question, invite a few kids to share their answers with the rest of the large group.

Session 6 | Jesus Wants Us to Help Others61

ASK:

• If the people in the other group were a bunch of bullies from your school, how would that change your willingness to help?

• How about if the people in the other group didn’t believe in God? How would you feel about helping them?

SAY: It’s easy to help people who are our friends or who think and act like us and maybe even look like we do. But it’s a whole different story when we’re asked to help people who don’t think, act, or look like we do.

Today we’re going to discover that JESUS WANTS US TO HELP OTHERS whether they’re like us or not. Let’s get started.

Let’s Explore!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits (see page 59) | washcloths | several rolls of bath tissue | red and blue washable markers | CD player

1. Have kids form two teams, the Injured and the Helpers. Use a red washable marker to mark a spot on half of the Injured, and a blue washable marker to mark a spot on the other half. Explain that these spots represent injuries. For example, a spot on a child’s arm means a broken arm, a spot on a cheek means a head wound, and so on.

Have the Injured go to one side of the room, lie on the fl oor, and moan and groan as they complain of their injuries. Encourage them to ham it up.

Huddle with the Helpers to explain that their job is to take care of the Injured by wiping their foreheads with the washcloths and wrapping their wounds with the bath tissue. But they can only care for the Injured with the red spots. They must ignore the Injured with the blue spots.

Give a starting signal, and let the helping begin! Stroll around the area, completely ignoring the Injured with blue spots and encouraging the Helpers to take good care of the Injured with red spots. After a few minutes, call time and gather everyone together.

2. ASK:

• Blue spots, what did you like or dislike about this experience?

• Red spots, what did you like or dislike about this experience?

• Helpers, why did you ignore half of the injured people?

Have kids form Bible Crews of four kids each, and then have kids talk to their crews about a situation where someone refused to

help someone in need.

SAY: Let’s listen to what a couple of kids discovered about helping others. Play CD “Super Samaritan” (18) on the CD.

SAY: Unfortunately, there are people in real life who just wouldn’t help another person, even if the person were hurt. Maybe they’d think the hurt person was the wrong color or the wrong nationality or a homeless person they wouldn’t want to get close to.

ASK:

• What would you say to those people who wouldn’t help?

3. SAY: Jesus sure had something to say to those people who wouldn’t help. Let’s fi nd out what he said.

Give each Bible Crew a Bible Exploration Kit, and have crews remove the Hands-On Bibles from the kits. Direct them to Luke 10 and “The Adventures of Super Samaritan!” activity.

SAY: In a minute, you’re going to read a parable, or story, that Jesus told. Before you do, though, I want to explain something. In Jesus’ time, a person from Samaria was known as a Samaritan. The Jews back then didn’t like the Samaritans—in fact, they hated the Samaritans. They thought the Samaritans had turned away from the true faith, and they didn’t want anything to do with them.

Have kids take turns in their crews reading the verses in the passage. When everyone has fi nished reading, discuss the following questions.

ASK:

• What surprised you about this passage?

• What do you think Jesus was trying to teach us with this parable?

younger ones.

Session 6 | Jesus Wants Us to Help Others63

• After reading these verses, who would you say is your neighbor?

SAY: JESUS WANTS US TO HELP OTHERS, no matter who they are. We’re not supposed to think we’re better than anyone else or that other people don’t deserve our help. We can be good Samaritans, too!

4. Have kids take the name tags and markers from the Bible Exploration Kits and follow the directions for making stickers in “The Adventures of Super Samaritan!” in their Hands-On Bibles. Then have kids sit in their crews to discuss the following questions.

ASK:

• You might not run across someone hurt in the road this week. What other ways can you be a good Samaritan?

• When is it hard to be a good Samaritan?

SAY: It’s not always easy to help someone else, especially if we don’t really know the person or get along with the person. We might feel scared or silly offering help. But JESUS WANTS US TO HELP OTHERS, and he’ll give us the strength and words to do it.

Let’s Praise!

Supplies: CD player or TV/DVD player

1. SAY: Let’s praise God right now for giving us Jesus, who was the perfect example of how to help others.

As we sing, keep in mind that God will always help us do what’s right, like helping others. God is great!

2. PLAY: CD/DVD

• “Live in Harmony” (Romans 12:16) (2)

• “Be Thou My Vision” (3)

• “Servant of All” (Mark 9:35b) (7)

Let’s Pray!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits (see page 59) | CD player

1. Have kids take an adhesive bandage and pen from their Bible Exploration Kits and spread around the room. SAY: Let’s take time right now to talk to God, one-on-one. This week, you might have the opportunity to help someone you don’t really get along with. Think of who that might be, and write or draw a reminder on your bandage. Don’t write the person’s name, just something that reminds you of the person, like “skateboarding” or “birthday party.” Then pray and ask God to give you a good Samaritan attitude toward that person. Ask God to be with you this week as you try to help that person and others.

2. Softly play the instrumental version of CD “Be Thou My Vision” (11) in the background.

Close your prayer time by thanking God for sending Jesus to be our example of how to help others. Remind kids that JESUS WANTS US TO HELP OTHERS, no matter who they are.

For-Extra-Time Activities

THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE Supplies: CD player

Ask kids to read the intro page for any book of the Bible and create a motion for that book. For example, kids could make a motion for rain for Genesis or do a beauty pageant wave for Esther. Play CD “The Books of the Bible Song” (8), and have kids do all the motions they have learned.

CREATE A BIBLE DICTIONARYSupplies: paper | markers | dictionary

Ask kids to create one or more new pages, each with a new word, for the Bible Dictionary. Ask for ideas of new words from today’s session—compassion and help are two suggestions. Have them write the word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a defi nition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!

SAMARITAN SNACKSSupplies: resealable plastic bags | bowls | spoons | various trail mix ingredients such as nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, and sunfl ower seeds

To remind them how the Samaritan helped the hurt man, have kids help make each other snacks. Set out a variety of trail mix ingredients, and let kids put some of each into a resealable bag for a friend.

HELPING HANDSSupplies: construction paper | scissors | pencils | hangers | string

Have kids make Helping Hands Mobiles to remind them that JESUS WANTS US TO HELP OTHERS. Have kids trace their hands on construction paper and then cut out the shapes. Kids can make a small hole in each paper hand and use string to hang the hands at different levels from a hanger.

HIDING IT IN YOUR HEARTSupplies: slips of paper | pens | bowl

Gather everyone to read aloud the Key Verse, Acts 20:35. Remind kids that even though it may be hard work sometimes, it’s always good to help others. Have kids brainstorm tangible ways they can help others in the coming week. Kids might say sharing their lunches, helping someone with homework, walking with the new kid in class, or helping with housework. Have kids write the ideas on slips of paper and put the papers in a bowl. Let each person draw a slip of paper and commit to doing the action written on it this week.

FOCUS

Session 6 | Jesus Wants Us to Help Others67

Family Devotion

Bible Focus: Luke 10:25-37

Discovery Point: Jesus wants us to help others.

Key Verse: “And I have been a constant

example of how you can help

those in need by working

hard. You should remember

the words of the Lord Jesus:

‘It is more blessed to give

than to receive’ ” (Acts

20:35).

As a family, think of

someone you wouldn’t

ordinarily help. Be honest,

and make it personal.

Maybe you have a crabby

neighbor. Maybe there’s

a bully in your class at

school. Agree on whom

to help, and then take

that person or family a

dinner, a homemade cake,

or something creative you

think of. Write a short

card that says you were

thinking of the person or

family.

FAMILY CHALLENGE

The Adventures of Super SamaritanIf ever someone needed a superhero, it was the guy Jesus told about in Luke 10:25-37.

Go read it.

Boy, that guy was like a superhero. Maybe we should call him Super Samaritan! You can be a Super Samaritan, too!

Jesus Wants Us to Help Others

Decorate the rest of the sticker to look like your very own superhero logo.

3 Stick the tag to the inside of

your shirt where no one else can

see it.

Now ask God to help you be on the lookout for people to help. Maybe you can even help someone you don’t usually get along with! After a few days of being Super Samaritans, write on your badges the names of the people you helped. Talk about what else you can do to help others. Put your badges in a place where they’ll remind you to love your neighbors every day in every way! Then discuss these questions:

Draw a large S on a stick-on name tag.

How does it feel to help others?

Why does God want us to help others no matter what?

How does God help us?

Tell each other about the best part about

being a Super Samaritan. Then pray for each

other. Ask God to help you see more and

more ways to help others.
