Headmistress’s Message Dear Parents Congratulations to our Year 6 pupils for their excellent senior school examination results which are on view, displayed around the school. I am sure you will join me in thanking all our expert teachers who have educated these children to such a high standard over the years. Year 6 have this week been able to relax a little, enjoying a visit to the William Morris museum. Everyone enjoyed the recent Purple for Polio Day and my thanks to you for supporting this worthwhile charity. World Book Day also saw our pupils disguised as their favourite book character—a day of great fun. Our sports teams have also been very active with cross country and netball events this week. See how they fared later in this newsletter. Lots of events are happening in March so please do check our website and portal for more information. Kind regards

Open Morning—Friday 13 March 2015 We are holding our next Open Morning on Friday 13 March with a presentation at 9.30am in the school hall. Any prospective parents are welcome to come along but we also welcome our existing parents who may wish to refresh their memories with a tour and to see what is happening in other areas of the school. We look forward to seeing some of you there.

Year 6 Art In Year 6 art lessons with Mrs Wheeler we have been doing still life. Mrs Wheeler gave us three different fruits: a banana, an orange and an apple to choose from. I chose a banana. The aim was to have four pictures, each in a different media, which would give it a different effect. The four medias are acquarelles, coloured pencils, acrylic paint and oil pastels. The acquarelles took the longest because we had to colour then paint. It was quite a messy effect. The next media was coloured pencil. I didn’t like doing it because it was very repetitive especially when we had to cross hatch, which is colouring over in the opposite directions. After that media it was acrylic paint. This was my favourite because it was easy to spread across the page. Oil pastels are the next media. They gave a rough effect. I chose the background colours red and blue. We split the background in half. I did two of my pictures with red at the top and blue at the bottom, and the others the opposite way. By Maddie Noakes

In our Year 6 art lesson we drew a still life replica of fruit. I chose an apple. We used four different medias; acquarelles, coloured pencils, acrylic paint and oil pastels. The four different textures gave a beautiful effect to my drawing. My favourite texture was the paint because it took skills to be precise which made it a big task but it was worth it because mine came out perfectly. I guess acquarelles and the oil pastels were easier than I thought they were. I chose different backgrounds to give my picture different effects. By Louisa Allen

Scientists of the Week

Tom Sharp—Year 6 Over half term, Tom entered three Speech and Drama classes in the Stratford and East London Music Festival which is held each year at Forest School. He did really well, winning the TV News Presenter Class with his Alien Abduction piece and also gaining a Commended and a Distinction in the Sight Reading and Storytelling classes. Well done Tom!

Years 1 and 2 Visit the Barbican Hall London Symphony Orchestra Children from Years 1 and 2 did the school proud on their trip to see the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Hall on Tuesday. After being introduced to each section of the orchestra the children were treated to performances of ’The Flight of the Bumblebee’ and Haydn’s ’Surprise Symphony’. It was then time for ‘The Chimpanzees of Happy Town!’ The composer, Paul Rissman, narrated the fabulous story as we watched the illustrations on two large screens and listened to their orchestra. It was wonderful to see the children join in with all the songs, which they had been learning in the music lessons. So now the children can remember the day they performed with the London Symphony Orchestra! A thoroughly enjoyable day.

Cross Country Races On Thursday 5 March 2015 the Cross Country team participated in the Cross Country relays. We were racing with eight other local schools. For some of our Year 3 pupils, it was their first few times racing for the team so well done to them. In the Years 3 to 4 girls’ race, Coopersale won gold and we won the first relay. In the Years 5 to 6 races, the girls “A” team got silver for their relay and the boys “A” team got gold. Overall out of all four races, we got two golds and one silver. I would like to thank Mr Robinson, Mrs Lane, Tracey and also Miss Lovejoy for hosting this event. Congratulations team. Max Bee—Captain

In preparation for the above races, the junior children had recently been practising by completing circuits around the grounds via the car park. Mrs Lane would like to thank our parents for their support and patience waiting to collect your children whilst this was taking place.

World Book Day Children have had great fun celebrating World Book Day. Pupils were able to dress as a character from their favourite book and the school has been awash with colourful characters from Kindergarten to Year 6. A variety of story telling took place including a special assembly and the juniors were able to take part in a competition to guess the favourite book of our members of staff. A fun filled day was had by all!

Gateau Au Yaourt Madame Bashorun has been making a French yoghurt cake with children in Year 3. Parents have asked for the recipe for this delicious touch of France and we are pleased to provide it as follows :- I pot of plain yogurt 2 pots of sugar 3 pots of flour 3 eggs 1 pot of oil Half of baking powder sachet 1 spoon of salt 2 spoon of vanilla extract Add ingredients in order listed Mix in the large bowl Bake at 160 degrees for 35-40 minutes Voila!

The Advent of Spring Transition pupils have been learning about growing. They have been exploring the grounds to find signs of spring flowers. They have been painting observational pictures of daffodils and the signs of early spring. They have also planted some sunflower seeds and will track their growth as these “spring” up in their pots.

Chinese New Year In Early Years, children have been celebrating the Chinese New Year. Transition children have been tasting Chinese delicacies such as noodle soup and they made Chinese dragons to commemorate the occasion. The children had fun parading with their dragon models and dancing to Chinese music. They have read a story about the Chinese New Year, learning how the animals came to be named in a particular order to mark the changing of each New Year.

Children in Upper Kindergarten Thomas enjoyed celebrating the ending of the Chinese New Year. They cooked noodles and fried rice and they all attempted to eat with chop sticks. They also made masks and took home a fortune cookie.

Oak-Tree Schools’ Sports Courses Parents will have received via email details of our Oak-Tree Schools’ sports courses which your children can attend as follows :- Easter Holiday Multi-Sports Courses These are run by Steve Grenfell and will help keep our children active during the Easter break. Saturday Morning Sports Courses These are run by Premier Sport for children aged 4 to 7 years of age. Places for these activities are limited and we expect a high demand so please do complete your application as soon as possible. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact our School Office.

Purple for Polio Day Thank you to everyone for your contributions towards our Purple for Polio Day. The children attended a special assembly to learn about the unfortunate children in certain areas of the world who are still crippled by this disease and our pupils wore their purple crocuses as a reminder. Thanks to your generosity we raised the amount of £370.

Textile Printing in Year 1 Children in Year 1 Daly have been learning to print using a Gelli Plate. As the name suggests the printing plate that you roll the paint onto is made of a Jelly like substance! This means that you can press your paper down hard into the soft surface to pick up the paint and create your image. You can make your own Gelli Plate at home using this recipe: 7 packs of Knox gelatin 0.35L glycerine 0.35L boiling water Mix gelatin with glycerine and stir well. Slowly stir in the boiling water with the help of a grown up! Mix well. Pour into a mould. * A rectangular plastic lunchbox is fine+. Push bubbles to the edge of the mould. Let it set overnight. Loosen from the edges of the mould and tip it out carefully. Store and carry your Gelli Plate on a plastic tray or a chopping board. Now roll paint onto it with a roller and experiment. Alternatively you can go for the easy option and buy one on Amazon. A4 size is great for cards. There is a lovely book called Gelli Printing which tells you how to get lots of fantastic results—ISBN 978-57421-913-5. A wonderful birthday present for any age group - including arty adults! We used acrylic paints and then just washed them off the plate afterwards so that we could put new colours on. Year 1 Daly chose an image with a strong outline. Mrs Daly cut out a stencil of their image using a craft knife. The children chose which colours to squeeze onto the plate and then rolled them with a roller. The colours merge together and different effects can be achieved by blobbing or swirling the paint onto the plate. However if you roll your colours too much you end up with a colour like mud! Wash off and start again. Put your paper stencil on the press and then lay a piece of quality cartridge paper on top. Rub gently then peel your paper up and look at the other side. This is the best bit! “Wow! “ was general reaction in the classroom. Now peel off your stencil and roll your paint on again. Place the cut out shape onto the press this time and place a piece of white paper on top. Rub gently then peel off your paper. You will end up with a positive and negative version of your image.

FOCHS UPDATE Spring is in the air, Easter is just around the corner and FOCHS have been busy arranging lots of fun activities for the children. On 16 March the Living Eggs will arrive at Coopersale Hall School - these are always of great interest to the children who can observe

the life cycle in action and coo over the new born chicks! On the same day the school will turn into a Mini Farm for the day and the children will have the opportunity to interact with and learn about a variety of farm animals at first hand. And if we're lucky, the Easter Bunny may pay us a visit! We have decided to postpone the Pamper Night (which had originally been scheduled to coincide with Mother's Day) to Tuesday 19 May, so that we can ensure that it's a really special, and well attended, event. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you think you may be able to help in any way, or if you have any suggestions that might make the evening even more memorable. In due course we will be taking bookings for treatments - watch this space. Meanwhile, Tuck Shop has practically become part of the school curriculum and one that the children certainly seem to enjoy! Year 6 Trip to William Morris On Tuesday 3 March 2015, Year 6 went on a trip to the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow. William Morris was born on 24 March 1834 and he was a famous artist in the Victorian Era. The gallery used to be the house where he grew up in as a teenager. He lived there for eight years. When we arrived at the gallery, firstly we went to the garden where William Morris played as a child. It was huge! Then we went into the gallery and we went upstairs to an art room. A lady called Sba showed us and talked to us about several of his designs. We discussed his printing blocks which were very large and carved out of wood. We also examined different designs of his wallpaper and fabrics that were used for interior design. We noticed that he used many repetitive patterns and that he was inspired from nature which was displayed in his designs. We looked around the gallery downstairs and we looked for answers for the questions we had on our clipboards. We spotted differences between his first ideas for his design and the actual finished wallpaper. William Morris was not confident about drawing the birds in every one of his nature designs, so he got his friend to do them for him. His name was Phillip Webb. After we looked downstairs at the gallery we went back up to the art room. We created our own printing design using stencil, different colours of printing ink and rollers. The activity was great and all the class enjoyed doing it. We would like to thank Mrs Watson, Mrs Redin, Mrs Wheeler, Miss Leeks, Mrs Brown and Mrs Kelley for coming on the trip with us. Max Bee
