But remember, if it weren’t for these small inconveniences during the summer months many of our local businesses would not survive. Last week while I was out and about, I noticed a sign on the side of the road. This sign caught my attention because it was not a state or municipality sign but rather a handmade sign on a piece of cardboard that read in big black ink “Bennys go home!” Now I’ll admit, had it been a few years ago, I would’ve chuckled at the sight, but this time, it saddened me. It saddened me to think that as a business owner, I would not want my customers to think they were not wanted; and essentially, that is exactly what this sign on the side of the road was saying. Granted, it was probably designed by some neighborhood kid trying to get a laugh, but it should teach us all a lesson; the lesson that even though we can get frustrated with the hustle and bustle of summer at the Jersey Shore, we should be thankful for every single person that comes to visit. Dear Members, Summer is here and things are sizzling within Southern Monmouth! This is

the time where people from all over the Tri-State frequent our shore area and for many of our members, this is the height of their busy season. This is also a time where a good handful of us tend to get frustrated with the traffic, limited parking, crowded beaches and even more crowded restaurants. On April 29, the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC), in cooperation with Belmar, Manasquan, Ocean Grove and

Greater Spring Lake Chambers of Commerce, teamed up with Central Jersey Blood Center and held a Blood Drive at Super Foodtown, 1732 Route 35, Wall. Sheri Sica, Customer Relationship Coordinator of Super

Foodtown, set up a registration center inside the store and provided a fresh fruit platter, cookies and juice to energize the donors before venturing out to the bus to donate blood. The Central Jersey Blood Center’s team was fantastic! There was a great turnout this year and the SMCC would like to thank everyone who took time from their busy schedules to give back to the community and donate blood. Thirty people attempted to donate and 26 pints were taken, which the Blood Center says is above average for this type of drive. The SMCC looks forward to working with everyone again next year! On May 6 the Lakewood BlueClaws hosted the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce’s (SMCC) BlueClaws Picnic at First Energy Stadium in Lakewood. The picnic area on the third baseline was reserved for the SMCC and was set up with a complimentary buffet of delicious ballpark food and drinks. It was a beautiful evening for a baseball game! The BlueClaws played the Lexington Legends and the BlueClaws took an early five run lead in the first inning. They continued to dominate the game and won 11-2. The night remained exciting with a visit by BlueClaws mascot Buster and a foul ball that was hit in the picnic area and claimed by Executive Director, Evelyn Mars. While enjoying the baseball game, those in attendance were able to network with one another in a more relaxing atmosphere. A special thank you to Brandon Marano, Assistant General Manager for the BlueClaws, for coordinating this event and also to the BlueClaws staff for their professional and helpful service throughout the evening. The Women in Business Council (WIBC) held their third seminar in a series of six on Thursday, May 15, 2008. Chris Ruisi of the Coach’s Zone gave a presentation on Owning the Room and how to effectively network. He said that it’s important to have an ideal client in mind when attending networking events. He also said to be prepared with three to five ‘killer questions’ that will hit the nerves of the person you’re talking to. He also expressed the importance of preparing for networking events and then following up with real contacts with a thank you note or another personal touch. There was a question and answer portion, as well as a reflective section. Chris both entertained and educated the group of women who attended the meeting which was held at Premier Executive Suites, 2150 Highway 35, Suite 250, Wall. Our next WIBC meeting on September 18, 2008 at Premier Executive Suites from 5:45pm to 7:15pm.

Don't miss the opportunity to advertise in SMCC's Southern Exposure.

In today's housing market more people are choosing to renovate or expand their existing home rather than build a new one. New Jersey allows people to submit their own plans for construction of residential structures. However, there are more and more guidelines that homeowners aren't aware of that make submitting their own plans a frowned-upon decision. Municipalities are directing homeowners to hire a professional to assist them in the design of their home. If you decide to hire an architect to assist you with the design of your home, there are many questions you should ask. This handy guide will help you learn more about the architect you are dealing with and ensure your project runs smoothly. 1. What does the architect see as important issues or considerations in your project? What are the challenges of the project? 2. How will the architect approach your project? 3. How will the architect gather information about your needs, goals, etc.? 4. How will the architect establish priorities and make decisions? 5. Who from the architecture firm will you be dealing with directly? Is that the same person who will be designing the project? Who will be designing your project? 6. How interested is the architect in this project? 7. How busy is the architect? 8. What sets this architect apart from the rest? 9. How does the architect establish fees? 10. What would the architect expect the fee to be for this project? 11. What are the steps in the design process? 12. How does the architect organize the process? 13. What does the architect expect you to provide? 14. What is the architect's design philosophy? 15. What is the architect's experience/track record with cost estimating? 16. What will the architect show you along the way to explain the project? Will you see models, drawings, or computer animations? 17. If the scope of the project changes later in the project, will there be additional fees? How will these fees be justified? 18. What services does the architect provide during construction? 19. How disruptive will construction be? How long does the architect expect it to take to complete your project? 20. Does the architect have a list of past clients that you can contact? As you can see there is much that can be learned by asking these questions. Expect the architect to ask you many questions also. It’s only fair to the architect that he or she feels that you are a client worth working alongside of. Many relationships between homeowner and architect are successful. Of course there are the few that aren't. Do your homework and avoid a bad experience.

On Tuesday, May 20 the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce held its monthly General Membership Meeting at Simko’s Grill in Brielle. Simko’s Owner Mike, Manager Colleen and their staff set up the beautiful sunroom for the meeting and provided a delicious buffet for all to enjoy. And as usual, the service throughout the luncheon was professional and courteous. A special thank you to Investors Savings Bank for sponsoring the event and distributing promotional goods to everyone! Despite the autumn-like rainy weather, there were approximately fifty people in attendance for the meeting. SMCC President Dana Gangemi of WayComm Consulting warmly welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced event sponsor Mark Balsam, Second Vice President and Branch Sales Manager of Investors Savings Bank in Spring Lake Heights. Next, Dana introduced new member Ken Varga of PBG Marketing Corp, 732-974-1379. And last, but certainly not least, she introduced speaker Rosemarie Poverman. Rosemarie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been practicing psychotherapy in Manasquan since 1977. She has devoted much of her professional time to popularizing the message of psychotherapy through her humorous presentations. Rosemarie spoke about the importance and benefits of a positive work climate. She brought along her portable stereo for some music and said that when our alarms go off in the morning we all wish we felt like the theme song to Star Wars. She continued that by the middle of the day we feel like Fontella Bass’ ‘Rescue Me’. And by the evening, our mood shifts yet again to ‘Amazing Grace’ played by bagpipes. With this introduction, everyone was hooked, entertained and even singing along. Rosemarie said that everyone has the power to make his or her own day and someone’s mood and performance should not depend on an attitude or stress from someone else. In order to remain motivated and innovative, one

must be resilient. Every once in a while, everyone feels like they have too much going on and at such times Rosemarie recommends shouting ‘YAHOO!’ – You Always Have Other Options. As a reminder, everyone at the luncheon left with a red button that says ‘YAHOO’. A very special thank you to Rosemarie Poverman for once again entertaining and informing the Chamber membership. Simko’s Grill generously donated a gift card which was won by Kathy King of Central Jersey Bank. Ashleigh Johnson of Foundation Title won a gift basket that was donated by sponsor Investors Savings Bank. And Stacey Farley of Commerce Bank won a voucher for a Free General Membership Meeting.

The Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) Sizzlin’ Summer Business Expo 2008 was a great success as it continues to grow in vendors and attendance each year. This year the exhibitors expanded into a third room and we hope that next year is even bigger! Trinity Financial, Sports & Entertainment Management presented former NY Giant Keith Elias who took pictures and signed autographs for all of his fans. And Eagle Ridge Golf Club golf pro Mike Attara was giving complimentary lessons to perfect one’s golf swing in anticipation for the SMCC 6th Annual Golf Outing on July 28 at Eagle Ridge. The SMCC wants to thank Doolan’s for hosting this event in their beautiful banquet facility and for providing delicious food and courteous and professional service. Thank you also to our Sponsors: 1st Metropolitan Mortgage, Trinity Financial, Two River Community Bank, First Financial Federal Credit Union, WayComm Consulting, Investors Savings Bank, New Jersey Natural Gas, Garrow Family Chiropractic, HarborPoint Bancard, Central Jersey Bank, Atlantic Medical Imaging, Francis Asbury Manor, Jersey Central Power and Light and Greater Media’s 100.1 WJRZ and 95.9 WRAT. Our talented restaurants, caterers, food and dessert vendors added amazing flavors to our food court. Thank you to 507 Main at Shark River, Attilio’s of Wall, Boathouse Bar and Grill, Chocolate Carousel, Connolly Station, Doolan’s, Fratello’s, Hinck’s Turkey Farm, Klein’s Fish Market, O’Neill’s, Sandbar, Simko’s, Spring Lake Manor, Super Foodtown, Tuscany Caterers of Jackson. There were plenty of opportunities to win a door prize! Greater Media’s Doug Sjonvall, who donates so much of his time and energy to the SMCC, was the deserving winner of the Grand Prize – a

widescreen High Definition LCD television, which was sponsored by 1st Metropolitan Mortgage. Many exhibitors brought their own gifts to be given away as door prizes and many people walked off with wonderful gifts. Thank you to our entertaining emcee of Greater Media – Doug Sjonvall, whose jokes and antics made the evening more fun! Thank you to our special guests Keith Elias and Mike Attara and to Joe Sharp of All is Sharp Photography for capturing all the great moments in picture. Their participation added great fun to our event. See you next year! All photography compliments of Joe Sharp of All is Sharp Photography.

A delicious spread of sandwiches and salads was provided by Valente’s Italian Deli, 2100 Belmar Blvd, Wall. SMCC President and Ambassador Committee Chair Dana Gangemi welcomed everyone to the luncheon and entertained everyone with her story of becoming a Chamber member. She continued by explaining the importance of networking and becoming involved in the Chamber and offered suggestion in how to do so. Executive Director Evelyn Mars informed the new members about what the Chamber can offer its members. Each Ambassador Committee member and new

member in attendance introduced themselves. It was an intimate and informative luncheon and provided helpful information to our new members.

The Howell Chamber of Commerce hosted a multi-chamber general luncheon meeting at Our House Restaurant in Farmingdale with Jim Leonard, Vice President of Governmental Relations for the New Jersey State Chamber. Jim Leonard joined the staff of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce in January 1995 as Vice President of Governmental Relations. Jim is the chief lobbyist for the Chamber and is responsible for directing and coordinating all legislative and grassroots activities on behalf of the employers of the state. Participating chambers for the luncheon included Howell, Southern Monmouth, Greater Ocean, Jackson and Lakewood.

The SMCC is creating a Young Professionals Group which caters to anyone who is new to the networking scene. Their first event was a joint effort with the Western Monmouth Chamber and Central Jersey Young Professionals, in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore (GSJS). Victoria Hurley-Schubert, Public Relations Manager for the GSJS, organized a wonderful evening at Camp Sacajawea in Farmingdale. The event began with a hayride to the Lakeside Cabin, continued with a tour of the Camp’s facilities and ended with smores around the campfire. If you’re interested in joining the SMCC Young Professionals please contact Committee Chair Christine Gray, [email protected].

2008 Day at the Races The Southern and Northern Chambers of Commerce held its annual Day at the Races on lucky Friday, June 13 at Monmouth Racetrack in Oceanport. It was a beautiful day for a day at the races! Attendees enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, with their famous crab cakes and bread pudding, and

networking in the private Rivalry Room overlooking the racetrack. It was too beautiful to stay inside so after lunch, many watched the races from outside. American Placemats was the Monmouth Track Race Sponsor and had a great photo opportunity with the

winning horse and jockey. Commerce Bank sponsored the event.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2008 the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) held its monthly General Membership Meeting at Klein’s Fish Market in Belmar. Ollie and Michelle Klein, along with their staff, provided a delicious buffet in their glowing front sunroom. The SMCC would like to thank Biltmore Associates, Inc. for sponsoring this meeting and wish them much success under their new name, Coast Appraisers and Consultants. SMCC President Dana Gangemi welcomed the crowd and thanked everyone for coming. She introduced new member Al Paulvin of Decisive Business Solutions, Inc., 216 Shinnecock Drive, Manalapan, 732-618-4240. Next she introduced guest speaker, comedian Joseph Anthony. Joseph Anthony is a frequent performer and headliner at the most well-known comedy clubs and venues in the Northeast and around the country. He has been featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing as well as various radio spots. The SMCC intended to lighten things up and provide a change of pace at the meeting and allow everyone to laugh and enjoy themselves. Mr. Anthony did just that. He poked fun at his big gig for a Chamber of Commerce at a fish market – the telltale sign that he’s made it big as a comedian. From his first word to his last, he had the crowd in hysterics. Afterwards, he introduced his new business – Gemelli’s Italian Market and Catering. In essence, he can provide the entertainment and catering services for all types of events. A very special thank you to Joseph Anthony for taking the time from his busy schedule to entertain our members at the meeting.

On April 24, the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) and Howell Chamber of Commerce held a multi-chamber speed networking event at Connolly Station in Belmar. The staff at Connolly Station was wonderful – from arranging the room for the event to serving and accommodating everyone. A special thank you to Brian, Kevin and Jess of Connolly Station. It was a pleasure working with Howell Chamber’s Executive Director Sue Dominguez in coordinating this event and we look forward to working with Howell Chamber in the future. Speed networking events give the participants the chance to have a more captive audience with other participants. The 24 participants were divided into two groups and each participant had approximately two and a half minutes to speak with the participant across the

table. Once they each spoke, one group rotated and this continued until everyone was back in their original seats. Several other people attended the event and enjoyed some relaxed networking. Like other speed networking events, this one was a success and we hope everyone made some valuable contacts!
