6) music video analysis - the worst
TRANSCRIPT
2) This is when we first see Jhene Aiko in the music video. This medium close-up shows her standing in a corner with the siren lights flashing
through her blinds. This shot could be suggesting that Jhene feels ‘trapped in a corner’ as she has done something wrong and does not know what to
do about it. Also, having the sirens flash on her reinforces the idea that she is dangerous and hints that she has done something wrong.
1) As the music video begins, we see various close-ups and extreme close-ups of police cars and siren lights constantly flashing. This informs the audience that
something bad has happened within the video. Essentially, this could be expected as the song is
entitled ‘the worst’.
3) In this shot we can just about see the foot of a man lying on the
ground. We can assume that he is dead and this is why the police are
outside Jhene Aiko’s house.
6) Here we can see the camera turning 360 whilst Jhene is laying on the floor. I think this represents the idea that her head is spinning
and she seems to be losing her mind.
8) This is the only part of the music video which Jhene lip sings, the rest
of it is purely based on the narrative. Also, we can now see that
she is wearing red lipstick which would increase her sex appeal even
more.
9) When Jhene opens the door, this shot shows her heels and the lower half of her legs which is the first thing that we see. I
believe this shot was taken in line with the male gaze as she is being objectified.
10) Here is the ending of the music video which shows Jhene handing herself in. The music video ends how it began with the flashing siren lights
on Jhene.
7) In R&B music videos, in particular of female solo artists, there is likely to be a large number of close ups for 2 reasons.
Firstly, because as one of Goodwin’s conventions states ‘there might be a demand on the record company for loads of close-ups
of the artist’. Also because their sexuality plays a key role in the popularity of their
5) This shot represents ‘a relationship between the visuals
and the music’ because the editing is very surreal. In the video, Jhene is
made to be psychotic because although she has killed someone,
she is getting on with it regardless of the dead body in her house and
the editing reinforces this idea.
4) This medium close-up of Jhene Aiko portrays voyeurism. This is
because although she is wearing a dressing gown, the audience’s
attention will fall directly on her cleavage. Also, in R&B music videos
the sexuality of females is very dominant.
