big results for his first time competing in a bodybuilding competition.

Anaru competed at the NABBA/WFF Top of the South Classic 2013 Regional Bodybuilding Show on Saturday in Nelson, winning his cater-gory ‘Novice’ and qualifying for the national event in Auckland on October 5.

Bodybuilding has always been a goal for Anaru but because there is not a strong follow-ing here in Marlborough he said he didn’t know where to start.

“By chance I was given the contact for Mark Anderson, a Nelson personal trainer who organised the show.

the icing on the cake for Anaru who has spent the past five months dedicated to a strict diet, cardio workouts and weight lifting.

Eating boiled chickens, tuna, eggs and drinking protein shakes and spending hourly sessions on the treadmill each night have helped Anaru to

shed his “excess fat”.“When I first started I

weighed 154kg and had 22 per cent body fat.

At the show I weighed in at 130kg with a 9.8 body percent-age, it took a lot of dedication and work to get to that point but the rush of competing and winning has definately sparked

something now,” he grinned.“Everyone has been really

supportive including my part-ner Mel and my daughter Piiata who I really want to thank.

“My work colleagues have also been great, putting up with my stinky tuna lunches,” he laughed.

Market held weekly at the train station carpark has been described by some as a ‘destination’ for Saturday shopping.

The club has held this market for 20 years, collecting money from site holders which then is distributed throughout the community by way of grants.

People wanting to sell home wares, furni-ture and clothing attract those looking for a bargain, while sites selling fresh produce, plants, antiques and even jewellery are a delight to the crowds which flock there every week.

During the winter the Boot Sale Market attracts up to 70 site holders who arrive early in the morning to secure their spot.

In summer however the popularity of this market is evident by the “easy one hundred” sites sold, Rotary Club of Blenheim mem-bers John May and Brian Simpson said.

“We have a lot of great clients who support us with the market and the community seems to really enjoy what is on offer.”

The idea to start a boot sale market was initiated by Brian after becoming president of the Rotary Club of Blenheim in 1993.

He could see the club was struggling to raise money for people, so he had a meeting with Marlborough Roads Manager Frank Porter who suggested a boot sale.

At that time Brian owned the Parker Grain Store situated behind the train station, so the market was initially held inside the building and out on the surrounding grassed area.

The club set about sourcing items to sell to help raise money, and it was club member Doug Dean who began sourcing wine bar-rels to be cut in half and sold.

As the railway station was developed and the area was cleared of the grain stores which sat there, the market eventually moved to the carpark.

“We approached Frank Porter and agreed to allow us to use the carpark.

“From there the market has grown and

become more successful and today we have people from the Top of the South coming to sell their wares.

“It been a simple idea which we have stuck to throughout the years and it works well and I’m pleased with how well it runs now,” Brian said.

In the early days sites were sold for $2, now they cost $5.

People wanting to apply to the club for funding are invited to meet with members.

A man missing after falling from a boat in the Marlborough Sounds has been named by police as Craig Alfred Partridge.

Mr Partridge, 45, a local wine-grower, fell overboard from a private launch in the area of Endeavour Inlet about 2am on Tuesday.

He was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

An extensive air and sea search by police, coastguard and the navy has turned up a jacket belonging to the missing man.

Mr Partridge’s family has requested privacy at this time.

The search was still underway late yesterday.

$10,000 for earthquake fund

The Canterbury Community Trust has donated $10,000 to the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Relief Fund.

Chair of the Trust Tracey Chambers said the donation had been unani-mously approved at their monthly Board meeting earlier this week.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sow-man said the donation was particu-larly poignant given that the people of Canterbury had a unique insight into the hardships endured as a result of earthquakes.

The Mayoral Fund will go towards Seddon and Ward residents who are experiencing financial hardships as a result of earthquake damage.

Candidates in PiCtonPicton residents are invited to meet

the council candidates during a public forum next Thursday, September 12.

The event will be held in the Picton School hall from 7.30pm-9.30pm and all are welcome.

Margaret McHugh will MC the event and time will be dedicated for members of the public to ask questions.

the Marlborough District Council has joined forces to set up an office where members of the public can stop in to meet them.

The office, located at 3 Maxwell Rd in the Blenheim CBD, is a new initiative aimed at giving the vot-ing public greater access to those standing for council.

Aiming to prove they can already work together, the new candidates

will set up a roster system and let the public know through advertise-ments when they will be available at the office for meet-and-greets.

The previously unoccupied of-fice, next door to Mango restau-rant, is owned by Blenheim Ward candidate David Lloyd, who has offered it up for use by all new candidates.

“It is for new candidates only, not (sitting) councillors,” he said.

“They already have a profile and

a record to stand on, whereas we’ve got nothing.”

Mayoral candidate Brian Daw-son was one of the first to jump on board, saying the move was a great idea.

Wairau/Awatere Ward candi-dates Bev Doole and Cynthia Brooks say having access to a central base would allow the people to come to them, rather than trying to get out to everyone in their rural ward.

“It’s great for me because my ward is so huge and that makes it so difficult to get out and meet people,” said Ms Doole.

Ms Brooks agreed.“It is a bit hard for the rural

candidates to walk door-to-door.”Mr Lloyd said tea and coffee will

be offered at the office, which he insists he has made available with “no strings attached”.

“This is not for us, it’s for the people,” he said.

Local design and construction expertise is to be a feature of Picton’s long-awaited new bus shelter, to be erected in front of the I-site.

Kai Hawkins of Hawkins Design of Seddon has designed the structure, while Davidson Partners of Blenheim are working on the engineering design.

Local companies are pricing the steel frame and installation.

“The only thing that cannot be sourced locally is the glass,” said MDC Support Ser-vices manager Dean Heiford. “That’s a highly specialised component.”

He said the Picton tourist sector had lobbied for the stop, asking that the job get under way as swiftly as possible in time for the coming tourist season.

$160,000 has been allocated for the project.

Using local firms would speed up the process and avoid additional margins.

“However, we still need to work through the building consent process, and possibly a resource consent. We have to go through the same hoops as everyone else.”

Picton is also to get a second and smaller bus stop at the bottom of Wellington Street , by the grassy area near the foreshore.

sell your home and upgrade to a new one?

It’s important you first under-stand how the new residential mortgage lending restrictions will affect you from October 1.

Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler announced in August that from October 1 banks will be subject to restric-tions on high loan-to-value ratio (LVR) housing mortgage loans.

Banks will be required to restrict new residential mort-gage lending at LVRs of over 80 percent to no more than 10 percent of the dollar value of their new housing lending.

Before then, it is essential that first home buyers and home owners looking to sell and upgrade need to discuss their options with an authorised financial advisor, said Paul Fuller of Prosper in Blenheim.

“The Reserve Bank has said to banks it wants to control lending to clients over 80 per-cent of the house value.

“These are steps being taken by the Reserve Bank to protect banking and the country’s financial stability from any financial collapse.

“There is concern about the rate at which house prices are rising which increases the likelihood of a significant fall

in house prices in the future.“If it was to happen that a

house’s value fell below what the bank lent, it would pose considerable risk to the finan-cial system and economy,” he said.

These new mortgage lending restrictions mean first home buyers will potentially need to put up a 20 percent deposit.

“For example a house worth $250,000 will require a $50,000 deposit.

This in turn now causes issues for home owners looking to sell and upgrade,” Paul said.

“When they sell their home, repay their loan, pay any real estate fees and additional costs,

they may end up with less than a 20 percent deposit required for a new mortgage.

“This is where it’s important that people sit down with an authorised financial adviser to explore all their options before committing to the sale of their home,” he said.

As an authorised financial adviser Paul invites first home buyers and home owners look-ing to sell to contact him at Prosper.

Marlborough District Council’s archives building behind the council offices has been completed and the area is to be marked out for some 8-10 car parks.

MDC spokesman Jamie Lyall said that coun-cil was looking to lease them after approaches from businesses in the area.

They were waiting for the parks to be marked out, however.

“The difficulty is availability of contractors.” With the aftermath of the earthquakes in the area the roading industry was, he said, “pretty busy”.

Tomorrow at the Seddon School, local small businesses will donate their skills and services free to the people of Seddon and Ward.

Five health and wellbeing practitioners will be accom-panied by Havelock’s Kerstin Gramss from Bread on Tour, who will be making free wood-fired pizzas for young and old.

The day will run from about 11am to 2.30pm and Kerstin, event organiser, said it was about helping the victims of the earthquakes heal.

“I’d seen the stories about Wellington’s earthquakes,” said Kerstin.

“And I thought ‘It’s not really up there. It’s down here.’

“People forget how hard it has been for the people here.”

Chiropractor Chris Jennison from Marlborough Family Chiropractic will also be in attendance, as will certified masseuse and registered nurse Nicolette Fee.

I searched back and there it was on 4 March, 2010, Mayor Alastair Sowman reported as “vying for a third and final term…...If he was appointed for a third term, the mayor said he expected it would be his last...

Nine years would be enough. It would be time to step aside and let someone else have a go.”

Well what happened to that promise? Mr Sowman is going for a 4th term.

Despite McKendry protestations perhaps it’s time for a change at mayoral and council level.

Dear Ed,There can’t be many of your readers

who are unaware by now, that we in Seddon have had an extremely moving experience and I am anxious not to let the moment pass without ac-knowledging the speed and efficiency with which the emergency response organisations swung into action.

They were everything they should have been to everyone who needed them and I must say that I have been treated with the utmost courtesy, respect and consideration by the many people and organisations involved, all the way from the plumbers who rein-stated my access to hot and cold water in record time to EQC who accepted my claim, gave good advice and had assessors on the job within a week.

In between these two examples of efficiency and effectiveness there have been a multitude of purveyors of kindness such as the Blenheim Presbyterians and Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the local Volunteer Fire Brigade, St. John and Civil Defence.

Finally it would be a mistake not to acknowledge the work over some years of Marie Flowerday and Lillian Broadhurst for facilitating the meeting held in the “Hub” rooms at the request of the EQC for the local residents to meet the MP, Mayor, EQC administra-tors, CAB representatives and other functionaries, all of whom were able to give information, answer questions and make significant contributions to the wellbeing and peace of mind of all.

Was asked to pay $17 for a ph in script when it would have been free for my 2 year old if he had an app with doc, wuld have taken doc 2min to write script for a cost of $17 but a 15min app for the same thing is free, doesn’t make sense. So nxt time I’ll waste everyones time and make a free appointment, i suggest other parents do the same and keep their money in their wallets.

How many years have you been in business?Johnson’s Barge service was formed in 1977 between myself, mum and dad, Allan and Val Johnson. What has been your most memorable highlight over these years?It would have to be building and launching our first motorised barge, ‘Pukatea’ in 2000. I designed it, Cuddons built it and mum, dad and my wife Jennie all helped to make the

dream come true. What is it about this region that has kept you here?Well it’s home. I was born and raised in Havelock and I have never been anywhere else I would rather live. How has your business changed over time?We no longer do passenger work. We cart more fish and logs than sheep and cattle. Also our systems have become more mechanised which saves a lot of the hard graft.What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate?Think very carefully about everything you do in business and always have some money put away for when times get really tough.

Now it is the other way around with nearly every TV repaired in the workshop. Also, how so many of the electronic products are now just throw away items and not worth repairing.What words of advice would you give to other businesses in this economic climate?Don’t be afraid to listen to advice from people outside your business. Staff are the most important asset of your business, so look after them.

Federated Farmers is joining the Rural General Practice Network in calling for specific funding for rural mental health.

This follows the latest annual release of suicide statistics by the Chief Coroner.

"When there are more sui-cides in New Zealand than road deaths, drownings and workplace accidents com-bined, there is a serious need to change tack,” says Jeanette Maxwell, Federated Farmers Health & Safety spokesperson.

“Last year, 541 New Zealand-ers took their own lives and

we know the cost of suicide painfully well in rural New Zealand.

“As the Chief Coroner, Judge Neil McLean recently told 3 News, “Farming is tough.

You're at the whims of nature and markets and you have no control over this and it's hard and demanding work in isolation.”

Despite this, Budget 2013 did not include any provision to address what is believed to be an increasing rate of suicide in rural New Zealand. Federated Farmers agrees with the New

Zealand Rural General Prac-tice Network that rural mental health needs specific funding and it needs it urgently.

“I know quad bikes acci-dents are visual and reportable, whereas rural mental health remains stigmatised and in the case of suicide, almost impos-sible to report.

“Yet given these numbers, some of the worst in the devel-oped world, we need to rethink that prohibition (of reporting on suicides).

“Not talking is just not work-ing.”

When did you start working with cars, Owen?

Well, I had two cars when I was 13 and I worked after school in a wrecking yard. I left school at 15 and got an apprenticeship as a mechanic and have been doing the same thing ever since! I did have a car yard as well for over 30 years – Marlborough Auto Sales on Main Street.

What were the cars you had when you were 13?

Two Austin 7’s – one was pretty much for parts. I actually ended up with three of them, one when I got my licence.

What cars have you owned and what were your favourites?

I’ve owned over 100 and I doubt I could list them all now! My favourites were the E-type Jag and the Triumph Stag. The E-type came out brand new in 1962 just as I started working. I’d have cut my arm off to own one then and always knew that one day I’d have one. I bought one from the States through a mate and did a full restoration on it – every nut and bolt – everything on the car was rebuilt. I loved it but it wasn’t very practical – just two doors and not much room. I sold it to someone in Japan.

The Stag is part of the Omaka Classic cars collection. I love the sound of it, the V8 engine. It’s also quite practical being four doors but also a convertible. It’s a good all-rounder.

Have you ever come across a car you couldn’t fix?

Yes – anything with electronics! I’m too old to be bothering with all that stuff!

What do you enjoy about work-ing on classic cars?

They are simple to work on, not high tech and it’s all the stuff I worked on when I did my ap-prenticeship. It’s relaxing when you know your way around – some of the cars I worked on back then when they were new, I’m still working on them now as classics. A good example is the red S-type Jag. We sold that to Cyril Broadbridge brand knew and I fitted the radio in it. Now it’s here and part of the collection.

How easy is it to get parts for classic cars these days?

Not too bad actually. There’s lots of replica bits you can get hold of if the original parts can’t be found and you can always make them if you can’t find them.

What’s the rarest car you’ve worked on?

I reckon the 1935 SS-Jaguar. We completely restored that, piece by piece.

Is there anything you don’t like about your job?

No, not really – maybe the cold winter mornings when the tools are freezing cold to the touch!

It’s some of those vestiges of that old spirit in rugby that we’ve seen in recent weeks, a spirit which is not artificially contrived.

In the last few weeks we have had more than an inkling as to what the Ranfurly Shield must have meant in the amateur era of the game.

Let’s face the cold, hard facts – the Ranfurly Shield is not what it was in terms of prestige value. The professionals who run the game would consider the shield as an add-on, something ranking down the pecking order behind winning the ITM and Heartland championships.

But tell that to rugby fans in Otago and Hawkes Bay!

Last week In Otago mums, dads, grans and kids came from all over just to catch a glimpse of the old log o’wood as it has been called,

before those Hawke’s Bay invaders had the cheek to whisk it off them last Sunday, and by one point I might add.

The shield has brought a sparkle to both those communities which competitions like Super 15, the ITM Cup and Heartland championships never have, and probably never will.

Why is that?Partly it’s the long history of

the shield. Partly, I think, too, it’s about provincial pride. Playing for your home province means a lot even for today’s professional players. Napier Boys’ High School old boy Zac Guildford rated last weekend’s Ranfurly Shield win

alongside being a member of the successful World Cup winning All Blacks.

It’s that provincial pride which set Marlborough alight when it managed the upset of all upsets against Alex Wylie’s Canterbury team way back in the early 1970s.

The spirit of rugby was fully alive in those days. There was no need for some PR spin merchant in Wellington to talk about heartland rugby. It existed. You didn’t even need to comment on it. Players were for the most part home grown, they played week-in, week-out for local clubs; they became local identities and rugby was at the very heart and soul of the

Costello was chuffed when she got to meet Emirates Team New Zealand yachtsman and Marlborough boy Winston Macfarlane at the Louis Vuit-ton Cup in San Francisco.

But it wasn’t just because Macfarlane represents New Zealand in the world’s top yachting race the America’s Cup, which starts this Sunday.

It is because the Marlborough woman used to be his nanny.

Ms Costello said it was a chance meeting at the Louis Vuitton Cup, the regatta that determines which challenger

races the defender in the America’s Cup finals, that allowed her to let grinder Macfarlane know she cared for him as an infant.

“I saw the name on the back of his shirt and I just inter-rupted whoever he was talking to and I said ‘I was your nanny when you were a baby!’

“He said ‘Really?’ and he gave me a big hug.”

Ms Costello was 19 when she was Macfarlane’s nanny, a job which only lasted about three months before she left the role to get married.

He grew up in Kekerengu, she explained, with his parents

Sue and Richard who still own The Store and Winterhome garden.

A couple of days later Ms Costello bumped into Macfar-lane again at the US event, and he said he’d told his parents he had seen her.

While she is not a massive yachting fan (she had been in the states on a holiday with her partner Kevin and some friends - not for the cup), Ms Costello said the reunion with Macfarlane was definitely a special moment.

“He was just gorgeous,” she said.

“It made my trip.”
