    jobtitlesthat aremuchweakerthantheactual worktheydo. Eventhoughthey'vehada lot of responsibilitytheyfeel guiltydescribingtheseskillsinaresume. Manyalsoworrythat prospectiveemployerswill thinkthey'relyingabout theirexperience.

    TerryhadworkedinRetail Sales for over 5 years. Her title was Cashier althoughshesuperviseda department with salesof $2 millionannually. TerrywantstomarkethersupervisoryexperienceincombinationwithherComputerScienceDegreesothatshewill beconsideredfor promotionintomanagement. I recommendedshelabel this partof her backgroundOperations/ Staff Management. Ononehand,thisdescriptionbuilt herconfidence. Ontheother hand, it madeherfeel scaredbecauseshehadneverhadajobtitlethat soundedthisimportant. Shetoldme, "Gee, I know this is true but it still feels like I'm exaggerating or lying. What if the employer checksand findsout my title was Cashier?"     Say, youwakeuponemorninganddecidetowriteyour resume. Your next thought isrememberingatimewhenyour bossreprimandedyouandsaidyouwereapoor worker. This inturnmakesyoufeel anxiousanddepressed. Thenyouthink, "This job is probably all I

    canget anyway so why even try?" Andguesswhat? Youdon't workonyourresume.Becomingawareof your thoughtsandfeelingsandhowtheyaffect your behavior iscritical tojobsearchsuccess. It'sbeenestimatedthatweprocessupto60,000thoughtseachday. That's almost22millionthoughtsper year. Until threeyearsagomyself-esteemwasverylow. Probably50%to75%of thethoughtsI hadaboutmyself werenegative. Evenat50%that's11millionnegativethoughtsayear.Realizingthiswasverypowerful for me. Nowonder I never believedinmyself. Nowonder it washardfor metochangeor accomplishmygoals. I hadahugemountain of negativityabout myself that directedandcontrolledmylife. Beforeyougoon, I'dlikeyoutolistsomeof thethoughtsyou'vehadabout yourself over thelast fewdays or months whenyou've consideredchanging jobs or writingaresume.

    Howmanyof thethoughtsyouwrotedownwerepositive? Howmanywerenegative? Didyoufeel anxiousdoingthisexercise?     I remembergoingintoaBarnesandNoblestoreonenight. I wasdressedinmysweatsandnot feelingtoohot. I hadbeenwantingtocontactBarnesandNobletodoanauthor signingbut kept procrastinatingbecauseI kept thinking."Why would they want me?" ThenIsawaflyer for asigningbyacompetitiveauthor. Myfirst responsewas, "See they want her, they don't want you." I walkedthroughthestorewithmyheadslumped, feelinglikeanobody. Oldprogrammingfromcritical parentshadkickedinandI felt powerlesstostopit. FeelingdepressedI wenthome, pulledthecoversovermyheadandwenttosleepasawaytoescapemyfeelings. Inthemorning, Ifelt better andsaidtomyself, "Hey, my book is just as good as hers. People always tell me my presentation is better. I'm going to calland see if I can get scheduled." I calledandwasscheduledfor several author signings. ZigZiglar usestheacronym, FEAR, todescribethisprocess. FEARstandsfor FalseEvidenceAppearingReal. That night at BarnesandNoblemyfearscertainlyfelt real but inrealitywerefalse.
