The Common Core Standards

• July 2010- The Common Core Standards were adopted

• January 2011- Board of Regents approved them

• Today- The Common Core Standards are THE standards used in both ELA and MATH.

Key Differences between the NYS Standards and the Common Core

State Standards

• Fewer topics

• More generalizing and linking of concepts – Well-aligned with the way high-achieving

countries teach math – Less details -> more focus on topics

Key Differences• Focus on mastery of complex concepts in

higher math (e.g., algebra and geometry) via hands-on learning

• Emphasis on mathematical modeling in the upper grades

• Basically- skimming over many topics vs. fully grasping fewer topics

For Example… the old.

… the new.

Standards Categories

• Ratios & Proportional Relationships

• The Number System

• Expressions and Equations

• Geometry

• Statistics and Probability
