MAMMALSLearn how specimens are cleaned and prepared for installation into our vast and diverse research collection; including a demonstration of the process of skinning and dissection. See the skeletal elements of various mammal species, both large and small!

Also learn how scientists from the Division of Mammals are conducting research on the evolution and ecology of mammals, often aiding conservation efforts around the world.

FISHES: BIZARRE FISHES FROM THE ABYSSCome explore the nearly unbelievable diversity of fishes from the deep sea. From the bioluminescent anglerfishes, silver hatchetfishes, and lanternfishes to the spooky tripodfishes, gulper eels, and rattails, the deep–sea is full of bizarre fishes that are adapted to living in little to no light, under crushing pressure, and with limited oxygen.

Field Museum scientists will have the most unusual and creepy species in our vast collections for your families to enjoy.

During Members’ Night, we will also be identifying our most recent deep–sea collections that were made last year off the coast of California at depths ranging from 300 to more than 4,500 feet. You can see what we collected and, if you are up to the challenge, help us identify our newest abyssal fishes.

Join us “down below” on LL2…

DIVISION OF AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES HERPETOLOGY AND HISTORY: FROM THE FOREST TO THE FIELDBehind every specimen is an interesting story! Join us as we share a few fascinating stories behind some famous (and some infamous) collectors and expeditions for the Division of Amphibians and Reptiles. Then meet with staff members who continue active field work and research in locales ranging from Indonesia to Indiana! (Invertebrates Lab)

YEAR OF THE TURTLE CELEBRATIONCome out of your shell, and help the Division of Amphibians and Reptiles celebrate the Year of the Turtle! Learn about some local species; sign our celebration banner that will be proudly displayed during the year, and vote for the Division’s Turtle of the Year! Don’t forget to pick up this year’s limited edition reptile trading card (quantities limited).

ZOOLOGY / INVERTEBRATES: INVERTEBRATES FROM AROUND THE WORLDAn endless variety of shapes, colors and textures can be found among the millions of invertebrate specimens in our collections. This diversity is produced by animals that have adapted to life in the sea, on land and in freshwater. Please visit us for an evening of observing a fantastic selection of these animals.

THE ANCIENT AMERICASFor 13,000 years before Europeans landed in the “New World,” the western hemisphere was home to hundreds of distinct cultures. Only recently have we begun to appreciate the diversity and ingenuity of these peoples, from the extraordinary craftsmanship of Ice–Age mammoth hunters, to the early experimenters who first produced the foods we eat today, to the awe–inspiring Aztec and Inca empires. With more than 2,200 artifacts, amazing reconstructions, and dozens of videos and interactive displays, this ground–breaking exhibition takes visitors on an epic journey through the ancient societies that helped shape our lives today.

THEN AND NOW: THE “STUFF” CITIES ARE MADE OFWhat would you like to tell the 22nd century Field Museum visitor about present–day Chicago? The Field Museum has a world–renowned collection of artifacts from ancient cities in the Americas. From these artifacts, we can reconstruct how the first city dwellers shaped their environments in diverse ways to meet common human challenges. However, we have no such collection to help us understand how people do these same kinds of things in Chicago today. Join the division of Environment, Culture, and Conservation (ECCo) and the Anthropology Department in The Ancient Americas exhibition to help us construct a new collection for Field Museum visitors of the future, so they can learn about our cities today. (Rulers and Citizens section)

WHALES: GIANTS OF THE DEEPDid you know that a blue whale is the same size as a 737 airplane, or that its tongue alone weighs more than a whole elephant? Did you also know that gray whales migrate over 12,000 miles a year, farther than any other mammal known? For years, we have wondered over whales from afar. Now, immerse yourself in their vibrant underwater world and discover an order of the mightiest animals on Earth like none before them. Dive to the depths of the sea with a mighty sperm whale in the hunt for giant squid. Climb into and explore a life–sized whale heart. Stand before two massive whale skeletons–each longer than a school bus. Listen to the voices of different whales and see how they use sound to navigate, find food, and communicate with each other. And meet people whose lives have been inextricably linked with whales–from legendary South Pacific whale riders to whale scientists and former whaling families. Discover why whales continue to intrigue, astound, and inspire us.

THE ROMANCE OF ANTSGet a rare look at the life of Field Museum scientist Dr. Corrie Moreau, and learn how her childhood love for insects spurred a career dedicated to researching ants.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY LAB: TECHNIQUES OF THE FUTURE TO INVESTIGATE OUR PASTThe Elemental Analysis Facility hosts a portable x–ray fluorescence spectrometer, a mass spectrometer and two lasers to determine the chemical composition of ancient artifacts. The second laser is a new addition to the lab and is used for large objects. Studies undertaken in this lab aim at addressing questions regarding the technological skills of the ancient craftsmen, the localization of the production sites and of the sources of raw materials and the circulation of finished objects, thus providing a better understanding of ancient civilizations. (Room 3805)

GEOARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONSObsidian, natural glass formed during volcanic eruptions, was an important raw material in prehistory worldwide. It was prized for tool making for a number of reasons, including its workability, sharpness, and visual appeal. Consequently, prehistoric peoples went to great lengths to obtain obsidian, often from very distant sources. For archaeologists, obsidian is a powerful tool for understanding prehistoric economy and interaction, because individual outcrops are usually spatially discrete and chemically distinct. The Anthropology Department recently began building up a collection of obsidian samples from the American West for use in identifying sources. More than 30 chemically distinct sources are currently represented in our North American obsidian collections. (Room 3805)

FAKA TONGA / CONTEMPORARY COLLECTING IN TONGA AND THE COOK ISLANDSSee objects collected by Regenstein Collections Manager Christopher J. Philipp while visiting the Pacific islands in 2010. Hear stories of how Tongan and Cook Islander traditions continue today and also how Tongans and Cook Islanders are reconnecting with past traditions using items of material culture. Philipp will be showing these new acquisitions, photos from the trip, and recounting his experiences of meeting new friends in these island groups. (Room 3805)

HUMAN ORIGINSJoin our scientists in exploring human origins: See a display of casts of key hominid fossils and stone tools and have your questions answered. Enjoy images of cave art from a recent visit to the key Dordogne region in southern France. Share also some of the latest results from state–of–the–art computerized 3D reconstructions of objects ranging from mummified animals down to skull structures that are barely visible with the naked eye. WHAT MAKES A RARE BOOK ‘RARE’?Is it old? Is it scarce? Was it made using a unique printing method? Does it contain information of particular importance? Explore the concept of rarity and what it is that makes the Library’s Rare Book Room such a special collection.

DICYNODONTSDicynodonts are mammal–relatives that lived between 265 and 200 million years ago. They were among the first plant eating animals on land, and they survived the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history. Visit the Fossil Preparation Lab to learn more about the group’s diversity and research on dicynodonts at The Field Museum, including fieldwork in South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

TRILOBITESWe’ll show you trilobites, the little animals that dominated the Earth for over 200 million years–long before their annoying descendants the insects got to be so darned common. They look a lot like a roly–poly, and could even roll up their bodies, but they lived entirely in the oceans. They were small or big, smooth or spiny, swimming, burrowing or crawling, with jointed limbs and external skeletons. Most of all they were diverse, with over 20,000 species. And they tell scientists a lot about biodiversity and extinction from 530 to 245 million years ago.

SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATIONDraw a fossil specimen through the microscope, then trace your drawing with pen and ink. All are welcome! (Room 3107)

THE INSECTSInsects eclipse all other forms of life on this planet. The interactions of insects form the biological foundation of all ecosystems: we cannot survive without them. Come see some of these wondrous life forms.

INSECT ZOOHold a giant tarantula! See local insects and live scorpions! Bury a mouse! And much more!

ZOOLOGY: DIVISION OF BIRDSVisit the Bird’s Division’s Prep Lab. There will be various activities representing field research, study skin preparation and birds for touching. From 5–7pm, come see our artist–in–residence, Peggy MacNamara. You’ll also want to come and see a live, large bird as well as those live dermestid beetles! Both are not to be missed!!

METEORITES FROM AROUND THE WORLDMeteorites come in all shapes and sizes and fall fairly evenly around the world. Come and explore these rocks from space from every corner of the Earth and find out what scientists are doing to answer some really big questions about the origins of the solar system and the universe.
