Late 1300s A special group of Ottoman soldiers were formed called Janissaries. They came from slaves and became a powerful force.

1520-1566 Suleiman I ruled the Ottoman Empire. Christians called him “The Magnificent” while Muslims called him “the Lawgiver.”

1826 A group of Janissaries attacked the Sultan, but were stopped. After this the Janissaries were disbanded.
