By 2041, it is forecasted to have a population of 13.5 million. This region is Canada’s most important economic engine, generating two thirds of Ontario’s and one-quarter of Canada’s Gross Domestic Product. The region’s 32,000 square kilometres includes some of Canada’s most productive farmland, as well as world-renowned natural features, like the Niagara Escarpment, the Greenbelt, and the Oak Ridges Moraine. Source: mah.gov.on.ca By 2041, the GGH is forecast to grow to 13.5 million people and 6.3 million jobs. The magnitude and pace of this growth necessitates a plan for building healthy and balanced communities and maintaining and improving our quality of life while adapting to the demographic shift underway. Places to Grow is the Ontario government’s initiative to plan for growth and development in a way that supports economic prosperity, protects the environment, and helps communities achieve a high quality of life.
