IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Your Elna model 6001 sewing machine is designed and constructed for HOUSEHOLD use only. Readall instructions before using this machine.
DANGER – To reduce the risk of electric shock:
1. Your sewing machine should never be left unattended when plugged in. Always unplug the machine fromthe electrical outlet immediately after using and before cleaning.
2. Always unplug before replacing light bulb. Replace bulb with same type rated 12 Volts, 5 watts.3. Do not reach for the machine if it has fallen into water. Unplug immediately.4. Do not place or store machine where it can fall or be pulled into a tub or sink. Do not place it in or drop it
into water or other liquid.
WARNING – To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electrical shock or injury:
1. Do not allow machine to be used as a toy. Supervision is necessary when this machine is used by ornear children.
2. Use this sewing machine only for its intended use as described in this manual. Only use attachmentsrecommended by the manufacturer as described in this manual.
3. Never operate this machine if it has a damaged cord or plug, is not working properly, has been droppedor damaged or dropped into water. Return the machine to the nearest authorized dealer or service cen-ter for examination, repair, electrical or mechanical adjustment.
4. This machine is equipped with a special connection cord which, if damaged, must be replaced by anidentical cord. This can be obtained from your dealer.
5. Never operate the sewing machine with any air opening blocked. Keep ventilation openings of the sew-ing machine and foot control free from the accumulation of lint, dust and fibers.
6. Never drop or insert any object into any opening.7. Do not use outdoors.8. Do not operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being administered.9. To disconnect, turn machine off and remove plug from outlet.10. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.11. Keep fingers away from all moving parts, especially the needle.12. Always use the proper needle plate. The wrong plate can cause the needle to break.13. Do not use bent needles.14. Do not pull or push fabric while stitching. This may deflect the needle causing it to break.15. Switch the sewing machine off when making any adjustment in the needle area, such as threading
needle, changing needle, threading bobbin, changing presser foot, etc.16. Always unplug the sewing machine from the electrical outlet when removing covers, lubricating or mak-
ing any other servicing adjustments mentioned in the instruction manual.

Presser Foot Definitions
A: STANDARD METAL FOOT AThis foot comes attached to your machine. It ismainly used for straight stitches and zigzag stitcheslonger than 1.0. The button locks the foot in a hori-zontal position helping to sew over multiple layeredseams.
C: OVERLOCK FOOT (optional)Prevent fabric edges from raveling by finishing theedge with a zigzag stitch. The brush on the foothelps the stitch lie flatter and reduces puckering. Usewith medium weight fabrics.
D: HEMMER FOOT (optional)Insert the fabric into the spiral on this foot. The spiralrolls the fabric, creating a rolled hem. An easy, pro-fessional way to sew hems.
E: ZIPPER FOOTUse when sewing zippers into place to avoid the footriding on top of the zipper coil. Attach either to theleft or right of the needle to sew each side of the zip-per.
F: SATIN STITCH FOOTThe cutout on the underside of the foot is designedto accommodate dense stitch formation. Ideal whensewing satin and decorative stitches.
G: BLIND HEM FOOT, ADJUSTABLEThe adjustable guide on the foot helps ensure thatthe needle catches only one or two fibers of thehem, resulting in an invisible hemline. The guide canalso be adjusted to create pintucks.
R: AUTOMATIC BUTTONHOLE FOOTPlace button in foot to determine the buttonhole size.The machine will automatically sew the correspond-ing buttonhole.
QUILT GUIDEThe quilt guide is helpful when sewing parallel,evenly spaced rows of stitching.

Extension Table (Accessory Storage Box)and Free Arm
Extension Table
The extension table provides more sewing space tomake sewing easier. The extension can be easilyremoved for free arm sewing.
Free arm sewing is good for circle areas like sleeves,waistbands and pant legs. If socks, knee or elbowareas need mending, the free arm will be best touse.
Pull the end of the extension table away from themachine, as shown in the drawing.
Push the table back into place to reattach the exten-sion table.
Using the Fine Adjustment Dial
Choice of fabrics and threads may affect the stitchformation when sewing decorative stitches or button-holes. The fine adjustment dial can be used to eitherlengthen or shorten the stitch.

How To Drop the Feed Dog
The feed dog drops out of position for special sewingtechniques: free motion embroidery, button sewing,etc.
The feed dog must always be up for regular sewing.Locate the feed dog lever on the back of the freearm. Slide the lever either to the right (down) 1 or tothe left (up) 2. To bring up the feed dog, hand turnthe flywheel after sliding lever to the left.
Foot Pressure Dial
Set the pressure dial 1 at “3” for regular sewing.
Reduce the pressure to “2” for applique, cutwork,drawn work, basting and embroidery.
Velours and knits with a lot of stretch may require a“1” setting.
Attaching and Removing Presser Feet
Press the key until the needle is in the raised posi-tion. Raise the presser foot and press the red button1 on back of the shank. The presser foot will dropoff. Place the selected presser foot so the pin 3 onthe foot lies just under the groove 2 of the shank.Lower the presser bar to attach the foot.

Turn the thumbscrew 1 counterclockwise with thescrewdriver to remove the shank.
To attach, match the hole in the shank 2 with thehole in the presser bar 3. Put thumbscrew in holeand turn clockwise to tighten.

Additional Presser Foot Clearance
You can raise the presser foot about 6.5 mm (1/4”)higher than the normal up position for easy removalof the presser foot or to place heavy fabrics underthe presser foot. Pull the presser foot lever � up be-yond the normal up position.
Seam Allowance Lines
The lines on the needle plate and bobbin cover platehelp you measure seam width.
The number indicates the distance between the cen-ter needle position 3.5 and the seam allowance line.

Controlling Sewing Speed
Sewing speed can be varied with the foot control �.The harder you press on the foot control, the fasterthe machine runs.
The maximum sewing speed can be varied by slidingthe speed control lever � . For a faster speed � ,
slide it to the right; for a slower speed � , slide it tothe left.

Adjusting the Needle Thread Tension
Choosing the Correct Tension - Straight Stitch
The ideal straight stitch will have threads locked be-tween the two layers of fabric, as shown left (magni-fied to show detail). Needle thread tension can rangefrom 3 – 5 and is normally set on 4 1.
If you look at the needle thread 2 (top thread) andbobbin thread 3 (bottom thread), you will notice thatthere are no gaps. Each stitch is smooth and even.
Occasionally the needle thread tension needs to beadjusted. Examples:
− stiff or heavy fabric− sewing more than two layers of fabric− type of stitch− thread
When adjusting needle thread tension, the highernumbers tighten, the lower numbers loosen.
• Tension is too tight
The bobbin thread shows through on the topside ofthe fabric and it will feel bumpy.
Turn the dial to a lower number to loosen the needlethread tension.
• Tension is too loose
The needle thread shows through on the undersideof the fabric and it will feel bumpy.
Turn the dial to a higher number to tighten theneedle thread tension.
• Adjusting Tension for Zigzag and SatinStitches
The upper thread tension should be slightly looserwhen sewing a zigzag or a satin stitch. The upperthread should appear slightly on the underside of thefabric.

SECTION IIGetting Ready to Sew
Selecting the Correct Needle and Thread
There are many kinds of fabrics, threads andneedles. It is important to use the correct ones to-gether.
Always purchase good quality thread. It should bestrong, smooth and even in thickness. Use the samethread for needle and bobbin. Always test thread andneedle size on a scrap piece of fabric.
In general, fine threads (the larger the number, thefiner the thread) and needles (the smaller the num-ber, the finer the needle) are used for sewing light-weight fabrics and heavier threads and largerneedles are used for sewing heavyweight fabrics.There are many specialty needles available fromyour sewing machine dealer.
Check your needles frequently for rough or blunttips. Snags and runs in knits, fine silks and silk-likefabrics are permanent and are often caused by dam-aged needles.
Changing Needles
1. Press the needle key to raise the needle.Lower the presser foot. Turn off the powerswitch. Turn the needle clamp screw � counter-clockwise to loosen.
2. Remove the needle from the clamp. Insert thenew needle into needle clamp � with the flatside to the back, pushing it up as far as it will go.Tighten the clamp screw firmly.
3. To determine if the needle is defective, place theflat side of the needle on something flat(a needle plate, piece of glass, etc.). The gapbetween the needle and the flat surface shouldbe consistent.
Never use a bent or blunt needle, as it maycause skipped stitches or thread breakage. De-fective needles can ruin the fabric. Always pur-chase good quality needles. Change needlesoften.

Needle Definitions
The illustration identifies the main parts of a sewingmachine needle.

Universal – an all-purpose needle that handles mostwoven and knit fabrics. A universal needle size 14/90comes inserted in your machine.
Ball point – the point spreads the fibers, preventingtears and is especially suited for knit fabrics. Notrecommended for embroidery.
Denim – the sharp point effectively pierces denselywoven fabrics such as denim and canvas.
Stretch – specially designed to prevent skippedstitches in synthetic suedes and elasticized knits(swimwear).
Leather – the cutting point creates small holes inleather and suede.
Topstitching – the extra sharp point penetrates layersof fabrics; extra large eye and large groove accom-modate heavyweight topstitching thread.
Twin/Double – 2 needles are joined on a crossbarand share a single shaft. Sews two parallel rows ofstitching. Available in universal and ballpoint.

Connecting Machine To Power Supply
Before connecting the power cord, make sure thevoltage and frequency shown on the machine areidentical to your electrical power.
To connect the foot control � , turn off the powerswitch � . Insert the foot control plug � and machineplug � into the machine and the power supply plug� into the wall socket.
Your machine may come equipped with a polarizedplug (one prong wider than the other). A polarizedplug reduces the risk of electrical shock. This plug isintended to fit into a polarized outlet. If the plug doesnot fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it stilldoes not fit, contact a qualified electrician to installthe proper outlet. Do not modify the plug in any way.
IMPORTANT: When using your sewing machine thefirst few times, place waste fabric under the presserfoot and run the machine without thread for a fewminutes. Wipe away excess oil.
For Your Safety
Do not use extension cords or plug adapters.
Do not touch plug with wet hands.
Always turn off the power/light switch first and thenunplug from the electrical outlet. Examples:
• when leaving the machine unattended• when cleaning the machine
Always turn off the power/light switch:• when attaching or removing parts such as
needle, presser foot, needle plate• when threading needle or bobbin
Do not place anything on the foot control.
Do not place heavy items on cords. Do not subjectcords to heat. Do not use damaged cords. Have thecord repaired immediately.
While the machine is in operation, always keep youreye on the sewing area and do not touch any mov-ing parts such as the thread take-up lever, flywheelor needle.

1. Up/Down Needle Key
If the needle is up when you press this key, theneedle will go down to its lowest position. Theneedle will continue to stop in the down position.
If the needle is down when you press this key,the needle will go to its highest position. Theneedle will continue to stop in the up position.
2. Auto-Lock Key
Press this key while sewing a straight stitch, zig-zag stitch or 3-step zigzag stitch and the ma-chine will sew a few stitches in place and stopautomatically.
* Press this key while sewing utility or decorativestitches and the machine will complete the stitch,lockstitch and stop.

3. Reverse Key
If you are sewing a straight stitch, zigzag stitchor 3-step zigzag stitch, press and hold this key.The machine will sew in reverse until you releasethe key.
* If you are sewing utility or decorative stitches,the machine will immediately stop and sew alocking stitch when you press this key.
4. Indicator Lights and LED Readout
a. When this light is lit, the readout displays theselected stitch.
b. When this light is lit, the readout displays theselected stitch width/needle position.
c. When this light is lit, the readout displays theselected stitch length.
5. Stitch Width and Needle Position Key
Press this key to display pre-programmed stitchwidth or needle position.
To decrease stitch width or move needle positionto the left, press – side of key.
To increase stitch width or move needle positionto the right, press + side of key.
The stitches listed below allow you to move theneedle to any position by pressing the – or +side of the key. There are 15 needle positions forstraight stitches (0.0 – 7.0).

6. Stitch Length Key
Press this key to display pre-programmed stitchlength.
Depending on the stitch selected, stitch lengthcan be set between 0.0 and 5.0.
To decrease stitch length, press – side of key.
To increase stitch length, press + side of key.
• The reverse stitch length will not sew any longerthan 2.5 mm (approx. 1/8”).
NOTE: Fine fabrics should have a stitch length be-tween 1.5 and 2.5, medium fabrics between 2.0 and3.0 and heavier fabrics between 3.0 and 4.0.

Winding a Bobbin
To remove bobbin, slide bobbin cover plate releasebutton to the right and lift away the bobbin coverplate.
Lift out the bobbin.
� Lift up the spool pin. Place the spool of thread on the spool pin with the thread coming off the spool as shown. Attach the spool holder and press it firmly against the spool of thread.
NOTE: Spool holder needs to be changed accordingto the type of thread spool

2Pull the thread towards the thread guides, under the hook and wrap it around the guide as shown.
3Pull the thread back around the bobbin winder thread guide.
4Pass the thread through the hole in the bobbin from inside to the outside.

5 Place the bobbin on the bobbin winder spindle and push it to the right. The LED readout will display “SP.”
6 Holding the free end of the thread, press the foot control. Stop the machine when it has made a few turns and cut the thread tail close to the hole in the bobbin. Press the foot control again. When the bobbin is fully wound, it will stop auto matically.
7 Move the spindle to the left to return the bobbin winder to its original position. Cut the thread as shown.
Additional Spool PinThe additional spool pin can be used to wind an ex-tra bobbin without unthreading the machine.
PROCEDURE: Insert the spool stand 2 and the ad-ditional spool pin 3 in the hole 1. Place the felt 4and spool 5 on the pin with the thread coming offthe spool as shown.

Inserting the Bobbin
Place the bobbin in the bobbin case with the threadrunning counterclockwise.
Guide the thread into notch A on the front side of thebobbin case.
Hold the bobbin with your right hand and pull thethread to the left, through the tension spring blades.
Continue pulling the thread lightly until the threadslips into notch B.
Pull out about 15 cm (6”) of thread.
Replace the bobbin cover plate.
Refer to the chart shown on the bobbin cover plateto check the threading.

Threading the Machine
1 Raise the presser foot.
2 Press the key until the needle is in an up posi-tion.
3 Pull the thread around the upper thread guide.
4 Guide the thread down and around the check spring holder.
5 Firmly pull the thread from right to left, over the take-up lever and down into the take-up lever eye.
6 Proceed down through the lower thread guide.
7 Slide the thread to the left behind the needle barthread guide.
Thread the needle from front to back manually oruse the built-in needle threader.

Built-in Needle Threader
Press the key until the needle is in an up posi-tion.
Lower the needle threader lever as far as it will go.Hook A is automatically inserted into the needle eye.
Bring the thread around Guide B and under Hook A.
Release the lever and let the needle threader returnto its original position.
Pull the thread loop to the back to manually bring thethread through the needle eye.
• The needle threader can be used with #11 to#16 size needles. Thread weight may vary from30 to 100.
NOTE: Needle threader cannot be used with a twinneedle or wing needle.

Drawing Up the Bobbin Thread
Raise the presser foot and hold the needle threadlightly with your left hand.
Press the 1 twice to pick up the bobbin thread.Draw up the needle thread together with a loop ofbobbin thread.
Slide 10 cm (4”) of both threads to the back underthe presser foot.

Straight Stitch
When the machine is turned on, it is automaticallyset to sew a straight stitch in the center needle posi-tion.
The straight stitch is used to sew a seam in wovenfabrics. The straight stitch can also be used for gath-ering, basting, sewing in a zipper, pintucks, rolledhems and twin needle hems.
Starting To Sew
Raise the presser foot and position the fabric next toa seam allowance line on the needle plate. Lowerthe needle to the point where sewing is to begin.
Pull the threads under the foot towards the back andlower the presser foot.
Press the foot control. Gently guide the fabric alongthe seam allowance line letting the fabric feed natu-rally.

Finishing Off a Seam
To fasten the threads at the end of a seam, pressand hold the key while sewing.
Raise the presser foot. Remove the fabric; pull thethreads to the back and cut threads using the threadcutter. (The threads are cut the proper length to startthe next seam.)
Changing Sewing Direction
Stop the machine and press the key to bring theneedle down into the fabric. Raise the presser foot.Pivot the fabric around the needle to change sewingdirection. Lower the presser foot. Press the keyto bring the needle up.
Sewing On Heavy Fabrics
The black button on presser foot A locks the foot in ahorizontal position when pushed in before loweringthe presser foot. This ensures even feeding at thebeginning of seams and helps when sewing manylayers of fabric such as welt seams used to hemjeans.
When the point of an increased thickness is reached,lower the needle and raise the presser foot. Press inthe black button. Lower the foot and continue sew-ing.
This button releases automatically after a fewstitches have been sewn.

Gathering
Gathering with straight stitches works best on light tomedium weight fabrics.
Decrease tension to between 1 and 3. Increasestitch length to 5.0.
Sew two rows of parallel stitches. Sew first row nextto raw edge using foot A as guide. Sew second rownext to first row using foot A as guide. Leave longthread tails at beginning and end of each row.
Pull on the bobbin threads simultaneously from eachend of the fabric until the desired amount is gath-ered.
Knot the threads at each end and distribute the gath-ers evenly.
Increase tension to 4 and decrease stitch length to2.4.
Sew between two rows of stitching to secure gather-ing.
OR
Lay gather fabric over flat fabric and sew the twofabrics together directly on the second row of gather-ing stitches.

Zipper Insertion
Lapped Application
Lapped zippers are usually inserted into a side seamof skirts or pants, for example.
Attach the pin on zipper foot E to the groove on theshank.
• To sew the left side of the zipper, attach the zip-per foot on the right-hand side.
• To sew the right side of the zipper, attach thezipper foot on the left-hand side.
Fabric Preparation
Add 1 cm (3/8”) to the zipper size. Use this measure-ment and mark the opening for the zipper.
Place right sides of fabric together and sew theseam located below zipper placement. (Make sure toreverse sew the stitches directly below the zipperplacement.)
Increase stitch length to 5.0 and baste the zipperopening closed. Press the seam and basting seamopen.
Open zipper and place it face down on the seamallowance. Teeth are on the seam line and zipper topis 1 cm (3/8”) from fabric top edge. Attach foot withleft side pin. Baste zipper in place, sewing from bot-tom to top.

Close zipper. Turn zipper face up (right seam allow-ance forms a small fold at basting line) and smoothzipper teeth away from seam. Attach foot with rightside pin. Reset straight stitch length to 2.2. Startingat the bottom, sew through the folded seam allow-ance and zipper tape.
Stop just before the zipper foot reaches the slider onthe zipper tape. Lower the needle slightly into thefabric. Raise the zipper foot and open the zipper.Lower the foot and stitch the remainder of the seam.
Close the zipper and spread the fabric flat with theright side facing up. Baste through the opened seamallowance and zipper tape.
Move the zipper foot to the left side pin. Guide theedge of foot along the zipper teeth and stitchthrough the garment and zipper tape. Stop about 5cm (2”) from the top of the zipper.
Slightly lower the needle into the fabric. Raise thefoot, remove the basting stitches and open the zip-per. Lower the foot and stitch the remainder of theseam, making sure the fold is even.

Pintucks
Pintucks should be added to your fabric before cut-ting out the pattern piece.
1. Use a washable fabric marker and draw lines forpintucks on the fabric right side.
2. Fold the fabric together on the first line withwrong sides together.
3. Place folded fabric under presser foot againstthe blind hem foot guide. Decide how wide youwant the pintucks and move the thumb nut 1 tomove the guide.
4. Sew using the foot as a guide for the foldededge.
5. Sew all pintucks. Remove fabric marker lines before pressing pintucks to one side.
Quilt Guide
The quilt guide is helpful when sewing parallel,evenly spaced rows of stitching.
Loosen the quilt holding screw, slide the quilt guidein the opening until the desired width is set andtighten the screw. Sew; the quilt guide will lie overthe previous row of stitching.
The quilt guide can also be used with the walking(even feed) foot, an optional accessory.

Rolled Hem (optional foot)
An easy, professional way to sew hems using thestraight stitch. Recommended for fine, sheer fabricsused in bridal wear.
Make a double 3 mm (1/8”) fold approximately 8 cm(3”) in length.
Lower needle into fabric at point where sewing is tobegin. Lower presser foot. Sew 3 or 4 stitches whileholding needle and bobbin threads.
Lower needle into fabric and raise presser foot. In-sert folded portion of fabric into curl of foot.
Lower presser foot; sew by lifting up the edge of fab-ric to keep it feeding smoothly.
Trim about 6.5 mm (1/4”) from corners to reducebulk.

Twin Needle Hem
A twin needle hem is quick and easy. This is an ex-cellent hemming method for knit fabrics because thebobbin thread zigzags, allowing the hem to stretchwith the fabric. Be sure to use a stretch twin needlefor knit fabrics.
Turn off the power switch and insert a twin needle.
Insert the additional spool pin and put the spool pinfelt and second spool on it. See page 17.
Threading the Machine
1 – 3 Thread 1 through 3 in the same manner assingle thread. See page 19.
4 Draw the threads down and slide themthrough the right side of the lower threadguide.
5 Slide one of the threads through the needlebar thread guide on the left and the other oneon the right.
6 Thread the needles from front to back.
NOTE: The needle threader cannot be usedwith a twin needle.
Fold the hem up desired amount and topstitch withthe twin needle. Carefully trim away excess fabricusing sharp scissors.
Remove twin needle. Set up machine for singleneedle sewing.

Zigzag Stitch
The zigzag stitch is a very versatile stitch. Simplychange its width and length. Use the zigzag to finishraw seam edges, sew narrow hems, sew satin stitchappliques and create beautiful monograms.
Adjusting Stitch Width and Length
Press the – or + side of the keys to change the stitchwidth and length.

Overcasting
Simple zigzag stitching is used for finishing rawseam edges (overcasting) on most woven fabrics toprevent fabric from unraveling. This is the fastestway to finish an edge.

Whip and Roll Hem
This technique produces a beautiful edge on rufflesand hems. It should only be used for lightweight fab-rics and is commonly used in heirloom sewing.
Decrease stitch width to 3.5 and stitch length to 0.8.
The fabric edge must be clean cut with no unravelingthreads. Lay the fabric edge in the center of the foot.The zigzag will catch the edge on the left and clearthe raw edge on the right, rolling the fabric..
Satin Stitch Applique
The zigzag stitch is commonly used for applique,monogramming, stems of flowers and petals. (Ashort zigzag stitch length creates the satin stitch.)Threads of 100% cotton, rayon or silk provide thebest results.
• Apply stabilizer to the fabric for the stitch to formcorrectly.
Decrease stitch width to 3.5 and stitch length to 0.4.
Applique Preparation
1. Press fusible webbing to the wrong side of alightweight fabric.
2. Cut out design shape. Fuse design to main fab-ric.
3. Sew design to fabric with the needle swinging offthe applique.
4. When you reach a place where you need to turn,lower the needle into the fabric at the outer edgeof the turn. Raise the presser foot, turn fabric,lower the presser foot and continue sewing. Youmay need to set the foot pressure dial to 2.

How To Sew On a Button
Hand sewing buttons to a garment is very time-con-suming. Sew them on in one quick, easy step.
Drop the feed dog. See page 7.
• Set the stitch width according to the position ofthe holes in the button.
Mark button placement on fabric. Use washable glueor transparent tape to temporarily secure the button.Place the button and fabric under the presser foot.Match the holes in the button to the horizontal sloton the presser foot.
Turn the flywheel by hand until the needle is downinside the left hole of the button. Lower the presserfoot.

Turn the flywheel by hand to position the needleabove the right hole of the button. Press the keyto adjust the needle over the right hole.
Stitch several times.
After you finish sewing, cut the thread leaving 10-15cm (4-6”) of thread at the button.
Pull the thread to the reverse side of the fabric andtie the threads.
Raise the feed dog after sewing on buttons.
NOTE: The optional Sewing on Button foot grips thebutton better and also allows you to create a threadshank. Simply insert a pin into hole on front of footbefore sewing. After sewing, wrap thread tails to cre-ate shank.

3-Step Zigzag
The 3-step zigzag (sometimes called a multiple zig-zag) is used to finish raw seam edges on syntheticsand other fabrics that tend to pucker. This stitchgives a flatter edge finish than the regular zigzagand is excellent for darning and mending tears infabric.
Place the fabric under the presser foot so the needleswings off the fabric to the right.
Mending a Tear
Pull torn edges together and fuse a piece of interfac-ing slightly larger than the tear to the wrong side ofthe garment.
Decrease stitch length to 0.6 – 0.8.
Begin sewing above the tear. Stitch down the middle,pulling edges together. Stop sewing just beyond endof tear. Depending on the tear, you might need tostitch area 2 or 3 times.

Blind Hem Stitches
The woven blind hem is a great method of finishing ahemline or sleeve. Finish the raw hem edge with azigzag or 3 step zigzag before sewing the blind hem.
Use the stretch blind hem on knit fabrics.

Fold up the hem allowance and press. Fold underthe hem toward right side of garment. Leave a 6.5-10 mm (1/4” to 3/8”) extension 2 at the right

Shell Tuck
This is a pretty hem finish for lingerie and tricot fab-rics. Can also be used for decorative rows of stitch-ing.
Use a lightweight fabric such as tricot. Fold andstitch on the bias. Set the stitch width and length asyou desire. You may need to tighten the top threadslightly. Allow the needle to just clear the folded edgeof the fabric when it swings off the fabric to the right.
If you sew rows of shell stitches, space the rows atleast 1.5 cm (5/8”) apart.
You can sew shell stitches in any direction on knits orsoft silky wovens.
Box StitchUse this stitch to attach elastic directly onto fabricwithout making an elastic casing.
1. Mark the elastic into quarters and match these tothe center front, center back and side seams.
2. Place the middle of the elastic under the centerof the presser foot and stitch into place, makingsure the elastic is evenly stretched.
NOTE: Use the optional Elastic Gatherer to eliminatemanually stretching the elastic. See page 50.

Triple Seam
This strong, durable stitch is recommended whereboth elasticity and strength are needed. Because ofits durability, once in place, this stitch is not easilyremoved. Use it to reinforce areas such as crotchand armhole seams or to construct items such asbackpacks. This stitch can also be used fortopstitching.
Elna invented this stitch in 1952.
Using a straight stitch (stitch length 4), baste a seamtogether. Verify the fit. Reset the machine for tripleseam and sew.
Saddle Stitch
Similar to the Triple Seam, the long stitch length ofthe Saddle Stitch makes a lovely topstitch effect forsuits, blazers, jumpers, jeans and linen napkins. Be-cause of its configuration, once in place, this stitch isnot easily removed.
Decide distance topstitching should be located fromedge of fabric. Turn the adjustment nut to set thisdistance. Position the fabric against left side ofguide. Lower the presser foot and sew.
Stretch Seam
A narrow stretch stitch that eliminates puckering onknit fabrics and bias seams. The seam can bepressed flat and opened.

Decorative Stretch Stitches
Choose a decorative stretch stitch for applying ahem to knit fabrics.

Super Stretch Stitch
This stitch is recommended for sewing fabrics suchas swimwear and stretch velour as it provides thegreatest amount of stretchability and strength.Seams lie flat and do not lose their shape. Foot pres-sure may need to be changed to 2 for fabric to main-tain its shape.

Buttonhole Variations
All buttonholes should use interfacing that is thesame weight as the fabric. Interfacing is especiallyimportant when sewing on stretch fabrics.
1 Classic ButtonholeThe most common buttonhole, found onblouses, shirts, pants, etc. It consists of abartack at each end and a compact zigzag stitchalong each side. Set the stitch width to narrowfor lightweight fabrics and wide for heavyweightfabrics.
2 Keyhole ButtonholeAccommodates the shank found on large but-tons used on heavy coats and jackets.
3 Jeans ButtonholeTraditionally found on ready-to-wear jeans andother denim garments.
4 Stretch ButtonholeDesigned for non-woven fabrics such as knit andjersey. It provides a decorative touch.
Test sew the buttonhole on a sample swatch of thesame fabric. Include the interfacing and any seamallowances that will be in the actual garment. This isvery important to ensure the buttonhole style andfabric are compatible.
Select a buttonhole. Alter the buttonhole width tomatch the fabric and thread. See page 42.
When attaching buttonhole foot, make sure the but-ton opening is at the back of the foot.

Extend the buttonholder to the back and place thebutton in it. Push the holder together tightly aroundthe button.
Placing the button in the automatic buttonhole footautomatically sets the size of the buttonhole. Thebuttonholder on the foot adjusts for a button up to2.5 cm (1”) in diameter.
Pull the buttonhole lever down as far as it will go.

Remove the fabric and place a pin just inside thebartack at each end to prevent accidentally cuttingbartacks. Cut buttonhole open with the seam ripper.
When buttonhole sewing is finished, push the but-tonhole lever upward as far as it will go.
If the button is extremely thick and difficult to fitthrough the test buttonhole, you can lengthen thebuttonhole by pulling the buttonholder on the footback a little extra. The length of the hole will increaseby that same amount.

Corded Buttonhole
Corded buttonholes are found on coats and othergarments that require extra strong buttonholes. Thecording reinforces and accentuates the buttonhole.
Sew a corded buttonhole using the same proceduredescribed on pages 39-42 for a classic buttonhole.
• Set the stitch width to match the thickness of thecording.
With the buttonhole foot raised, hook the filler cord 1on the spur 2 at the back of the buttonhole foot.Bring the ends forward under the buttonhole foot.
Position the cord into the forks 3 on the front of thefoot to hold the ends tight.
Lower the needle into the garment where the button-hole will start and lower the presser foot.
Press the foot control and slowly sew the buttonhole.Each side of the buttonhole and the bartacks will besewn over the cord. Remove the fabric from the ma-chine and cut only the sewing threads.
Pull the left end of the cord to tighten it. Thread theend through a darning needle, draw to the wrongside of the fabric and cut.
Cut open buttonhole.

Buttonhole Applique
A favorite method of applying small pieces of fabricto quilts for decoration.
Use fine embroidery thread (50 weight or finer) andneedle appropriate to fabric. You may need to setthe foot pressure dial to 2.
1. In this type of applique, raw edges are foldedunder.
To prepare raw edge, first cut applique designout of paper.
2. Press fusible webbing to wrong side of appliquefabric.
3. Cut the fabric slightly larger than paper pattern.
4. Fold fabric under to match paper pattern size.Remove pattern. Press only the edge to form aperfectly shaped design.
NOTE: Clip curves where necessary.
5. Press applique in place and sew. Straight edgeof the stitch is sewn next to folded edge of appli-que.

Fringing
Fringing adds a special touch on table linens andshawls. Choose a firm, woven fabric like linen wherethreads can be removed easily.
Carefully cut the fabric on grain. Remove a singleyarn or thread where the fringing is to begin. Sewdown the left side so the right hand stitches fall inthe open space. Remove all excess yarn to createfringe.
Stitch can also be used.
HemstitchesHemstitching, also known as French hand sewing,was traditionally only a hand sewn art. There areseveral stitches to choose from that will add an “oldworld charm”. Best results require the use of linen,cotton or a blend of linen/cotton.
Thread machine, needle and bobbin with a fine cot-ton embroidery thread (50 weight or finer). Insert auniversal needle size #110 or a wing needle. Usespray starch and press to stabilize fabric.
NOTE: Only insert a wing needle when sewing thestitches listed below. A wing needle is wider than aregular needle. Hand turn the flywheel a few times toensure needle does not touch needle plate. If needletouches needle plate, narrow the stitch width.
Draw design lines with a washable fabric marker.Sew slowly over design lines.

Drawn Work
Drawn work uses the same method as fringing.Choose a firm, woven fabric like linen where threadscan be removed easily.
Carefully cut fabric on grain. Determine width of thedrawn work and remove one yarn or fabric thread ateach end.
Sew down right side, guiding fabric so left handstitches fall in open space.
After finishing left side, turn the fabric around 180°.Sew down other side.
Remove the yarn or fabric threads between thestitching.
Picot Stitch
The picot stitch can be used to sew fabrics together“edge-to-edge”.
1. Fold and press under the seam allowance towrong side of fabric on both fabric edges.
2. With the fabric right side up, place the foldededges next to each other under the middle of thepresser foot. Sew with the folded edges touchingeach other.
NOTE: Create fagoting (bridging), a technique seenin heirloom sewing, with the optional Fagoting (Bridg-ing) Plate. Two folded edges are joined together bythreads over an open area. See page 50.

Scallop Edges
Scallop stitches can be used to attractively finish theedges of collars, pockets and placemats.
To edge a collar, place interfacing between upperand under collar and sew the scallop on the seamline.
After sewing, trim fabric close to stitching. Do not cutthe scallops.
This stitch can also be used.

Choose any of the stitches 31-60 for decorative sew-ing.

Smocking
Smocking is a delicate, decorative treatment onchildren’s clothing or women’s blouses. Choose asoft, lightweight fabric such as batiste, gingham orchallis. Cut the fabric three times the finished width.
Increase stitch length to 5.0.
Sew rows of straight stitches about 1 cm (3/8”) apart,across the area to be smocked. (A looser needlethread tension will make gathering easier.)

Tie the threads along one edge. Pull the bobbinthreads to distribute the gathers evenly. Secure thethreads at the other end.

Elastic Gatherer PlateApply elastic in one step without creating a casing.The elastic gatherer stretches the elastic as it issewn to the fabric, a quick and easy method. Avail-able in 3 sizes – 7 mm, 10 mm or 13 mm (1/4”, 3/8”or 1/2”).
Increase stitch length to 3.0. Remove bobbin coverplate.
Loosen the adjusting screw 1 on the elastic gath-erer. Angle cut elastic end and insert elastic into slot2. Pull elastic through slot until 4 cm – 5 cm (1 1/2" -2”) extends out the back. Tighten adjusting screw.
Attach elastic gatherer to machine.
Place scrap fabric under foot on top of elastic. Testsew.
Tighten or loosen adjusting screw as desired.
Fagoting (Bridging) Plate
Fagoting (bridging) is a technique seen in heirloomsewing. Two folded edges are joined together bythreads over an open area. Use linen, cotton orblend of linen/cotton.
Remove the bobbin cover plate and attach the nar-row fagoting plate.
Thread machine, needle and bobbin with a fine em-broidery thread (50 weight or finer). Use spray starchto stabilize fabric.
Fold and press under seam allowance to wrong sideof fabric.
Place folded fabric right side up on both sides of fag-oting plate. Sew slowly, guiding the fabrics againstthe fagoting plate. Adjust stitch width so needlecatches folded edges.

Taking Care of Your Machine
Your Elna 6001 has been meticulously designed andmanufactured to give you a lifetime of sewing plea-sure. Do not store the machine in a high humidityarea, near a heat radiator or in direct sunlight. Themachine is self-lubricating, however, the area aroundthe bobbin and hook must be cleaned each time themachine has had extensive use. Do not dismantlethe machine further than explained on these pages.Clean the outside of the machine with a soft clothand pure soap.
Cleaning the Bobbin Area
Loose threads and dust may cause puckeredstitches and thread breakage during stitching. Checkfor lint buildup after each project is completed.
Press the key until the needle is raised. Unplugthe machine before cleaning.
1 Slide the bobbin cover plate release button tothe right to remove the bobbin cover plate.
2 Take out the bobbin; brush out dust and lint.(You can also use a small vacuum cleaner.)
3 Insert the bobbin and attach the bobbin coverplate.
Cleaning the Hook Area and Feed Dog
1 Remove the presser foot, bobbin cover plate,needle and bobbin. Use the screwdriver suppliedwith the machine to remove the screw on the leftside needle plate.
2 Remove the needle plate. Lift up and remove the bobbin case.

� Clean the feed dog and hook area with the lint brush. Wipe out gently with soft, dry cloth. (You can also use a small vacuum cleaner.)
Replacing the Bobbin Case
4 Insert the bobbin case so the knob fits next tothe stopper in the hook area.

5 Replace the needle plate, inserting the twoneedle plate guide pins into the holes in theneedle plate. Replace the screw.
After cleaning, be sure to replace the needle,presser foot and bobbin.
Changing the Light Bulb
The sewing light is located behind the face plate.
Unplug the machine.
Remove screw button and screw. Pull away faceplate.
Pull out light socket. Pull out light bulb. Push in lightbulb with pins aligned to holes in light socket. Pushin light socket.
Replace face plate, screw and screw button.
NOTE: Only use same type light bulb rated 12 Volts,5 watts.
