A BIG thank you to Mike and Pat Freeney for sharing their experiences and stories about living in Ireland. They were very informative as well as enlightening as to the Irish lifestyle. Their passion and love of Ireland was evi-dent in their sharing of memories and tales of the local people and friends.

We learned that Ireland is very similar in size and population to the state of Kentucky; however ap-proximately 50% of the population lives in Dublin. Most social activity takes place in Pubs, the Post Office or Church. Life is very relaxed and the people are very friendly.

A traditional Irish meal was served. Irish Stew Colcannon Soda Break

2018-2019 Bluegrass Area Homemakers Leader Lesson Ballot _____ 1. Nourish Your Digestive System Our large intestine (colon) is home to 100 trillion “friendly” bacteria. These bacteria help defend us against disease, make certain vitamins such as vitamin K, and help break down extra food residue that remains after digestion in the small intestine. This process is known as fermentation. Our bacteria can become imbalanced due to stress, diarrhea, changes in diet and antibiotics. Consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, probiotics and prebiotics can help

our bacteria stay within a healthy balance. _____ 2. Nourish Your Muscles The maintenance of your muscles plays a major role in healthy aging. By taking care of your muscles, you can impact your quality of life now and in the future. The proteins in our bodies, continuously are being broken down and replaced. Protein is essential to life and needs to be consumed at each meal.

_____ 3. Nourish Your Skin Skin is the largest organ in the body. Skin serves as a protective barrier to help prevent harmful substances from entering the body. Damaging sun rays, chemicals, pollution and smoke all can affect the skin. Therefore, if we really want to protect our bodies, we need to commit to protecting our skin and making it a powerful barrier. Similar to other organs, our skin requires special care for optimal function. During this lesson we will discuss sunscreen, hygiene tips, and the importance of hydration and consuming antioxidants. _____ 4. Hiring a Dependable Contractor Building, remodeling, or repairing a home can be one of the costliest undertakings a family experiences. When building or repairing your home, the general contractor you hire can be either the biggest help or the biggest source of problems you will encounter. Disreputable builders may try to take advantage of you, lining their pocket, while leaving your house in an unsatisfactory state. You can learn to protect your interests and avoid financial disaster by becoming an informed consumer.

_____ 5. Drying, the Other Food Preservation Method Drying (dehydrating) food is one of the oldest and easiest methods of food preservation. Dehydration is the process of removing waer or moisture from a food product. Removing moisture from foods makes them smaller and lighter, but preserves taste and nutritional value. In this class we will learn about dehydrators, the principles and process of drying fruits, vegetables and meats and ways to use your finished products.

_____ 6. The Five Love Languages This program is based on the book by Gary Chapman. Everyone speaks different languages when relating to others. This leader lesson will help you identify what love “language” you are speaking. And what language your spouse, children and co-workers are speaking. If we know the language of the people that we love, this will improve our relationships and our communication.

_____ 7. Radon—Why is it Dangerous? Did you know that there is NO safe level of radon? Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer and most exposure occurs in our homes. A naturally occurring radioactive gas that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, radon attaches to dust or tobacco smoke and gets carried into the lungs. What can you do about it? This program will teach you about how to test your home, know your level and fix high radon levels when necessary.

Message from President

Just when we were getting back into our regular

routine, it snowed yesterday. A 2 hour delay was

declared and our routine went out the window. An-

other word for routine is rhythm. We all need

rhythm because we all lead busy lives, some more

frantic than other. Children need regular bedtimes,

mealtimes, and quiet times. Their classrooms have

rhythm or they would be chaos. The seasons have

their own rhythm too and I am so looking forward to

moving into Spring!!! And Spring brings our annual

meeting in April – have you thought of something

you can share for our auction? Keep those volunteer

service hours!

Ann Davis McClain Bourbon County Extension Homemakers President

Happy Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, National Caregiver’s Day, Heart Health Month and Black History Month!

That is a lot of special days for the month of February and each has its special meaning and purpose in our lives, just as

each of us has a special meaning and purpose. 2018 has gotten off to a very good start. The Relatives as Parents has

doubled in size, we have experienced a dream trip to Ireland and we are getting ready to share the importance of

nutrition to Kindergarten students by sharing the Peter Rabbit story and skit. All of these accomplishments have

occurred through “Teamwork” - our theme for the year. A team that cares for all sectors of the Paris/Bourbon County

community.

"I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things." Mother Teresa

The Importance of Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is part of a healthy lifestyle. Most adults need 7 ½ to 9 hours of sleep each night. Here are a few suggestions to get the rest you need: Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol 4-6 hours before bedtime. Avoid going to bed too hungry or too full. Be physically active every day to im-prove both your ability to fall asleep quickly and your sleep quality. Get up and go to bed at the same time every day, even try to do so on weekends
