Occurs naturally in many places around the world

    Three main types:

Inhalation: The most common way for asbestos fibers to enter the bodyis through breathing. Asbestos-containing materials are not generally

considered to be harmful unless they are releasing dust or fibers into

the air where they can be inhaled or ingested.

Friable: Asbestos is most hazardous when it is friable (easily crumbled

by hand) and released into the air. Sprayed-on asbestos insulation ishighly friable. Asbestos floor tile is not.

Disturbed: Asbestos-containing materials will not release fibers unlessdisturbed or damaged in some way. Example: Drilling into an asbestos

wallboard may release fibers into the air. If left alone, it will not. Damage and deterioration: Water damage, continual vibration, aging,

and physical impact such as drilling, grinding, buffing, cutting, sawing, or

striking can increase friability, making fiber release more likely.

Asbestos fibers are inhaled and travel downthe trachea through the bronchial tubes to

the bronchioles. Fibers embedded in these

    airways can cause lung cancer.

    Asbestosis can occur when inhaled

asbestos fibers scar the honeycombed air

sacs (called alveoli) and restrict breathing.

The condition mainly results from long term

    exposure.

    Mesothelioma can occur when asbestos

fibers pass through the alveoli and enter the

chest cavity lining (called the pleura). A fairly

    rare cancer, mesothelioma is usually

discovered 25 to 40 years after a person isexposed to asbestos. Nearly all victims die

    within a year of diagnosis.

    Mesothelioma sometimes occurs in the

    abdominal lining (called the peritoneum.)

as the period at the end of

    Asbestos causes health problems:

Asbestos causes damage when it is inhaled and lodges in

the deepest areas of the lungs. It cannot be removed by the

    bodys normal defenses.

The fibers scar the lungs, reducing capacity.

Consistent exposure increases the risk for lung cancer and

mesothelial (membrane around the heart and lungs) cancer.

Long-term impact of asbestos exposure is not known

because it can take up to 50 years to manifest.

Smoking can act synergistically to increase theseverity of asbestos-related disease.

Smokers who are exposed to carcinogens, such as

NEVER sand, grind, drill, hammer, cut, saw, break, damage, move or disturb asbestos-containing materials or SUSPECTED

    asbestos-containing materials.

NOTIFY YOUR SUPERVISOR if you come in contact with a

material you suspect to contain asbestos! The fleet has been surveyed for asbestos containing materials.

Your supervisor will notify QHSE to have the material sampled for

asbestos content if the suspect material has not already been

    sampled and identified.

If the material is determined to contain asbestos, it cannot be

disturbed or removed except by properly trained personnel with

appropriate respiratory protection and engineering controls.

Keep it wet: Asbestos-containing materials mustbe handled, mixed, applied, removed, cut, scored,

or otherwise worked while wet to reduce exposure

    to airborne fibers.

The "wet"method must also be used when

products containing asbestos are removed from

bags, cartons, or containers. If this is not possible,

removal must be done in an enclosed area or areawith a HEPA air filtration system.

Housekeeping is important in proper work practices. All surfaces must be maintained as free as realistically possible of

accumulations of asbestos-containing dust and waste.

    Follow these rules:

Only clean floors and other surfaces contaminated with asbestos byvacuuming with HEPA vacuums and/orwet cleaning methods.

NEVER use compressed air for cleaning purpose. It is PROHIBITED.

Dispose of asbestos waste, scrap, debris, bags, containers, and

equipment in sealed, impermeable bags or containers.

To the extent practicable, engineering and work practice controlsmust be used to lower employee exposure to within thepermissible exposure limits (PEL).
