A RIVALRY BEGINS: In the first-ever regular-season meeting between the two teams, the Jackals fell to the Bears, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark. Jackals’ catch-er Myron Leslie doubled, homered, and scored a pair of runs, but Bears’ starter Eric Eden allowed just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win. The Jackals overcame a 5-1 second-inning deficit to earn the victory last night in game two of the series.

JACKAL BITES: The Jackals have allowed a first-inning run in four of their first five contests... The Jackals’ bullpen has allowed just one run in 5 2/3 in-nings this series after being tagged for eight earned runs over eight innings during the first three games of the season.

OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their sea-son opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6.

MR. JONES: Designated hitter Mike Jones launched a two-run home run in each of the first two games of the season at Pittsfield. Last season with the Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Jones homered just five times in 97 contests.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring train-ing. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yan-kees’ organization.

FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who man-aged the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever

Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giar-raputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enter-prises, which is the same ownership group that owns the Jackals.

FAMILIAR FACES: Seven players from the Jackals 2010 team are on the 2011 opening day roster, including pitchers Isaac Pavlik, A.J. Wideman, Mike Pontius, and Chris Vasami, and infielders Argenis Reyes, Dan Better-idge, and Mike DeJesus.

LOADED WITH LEFTIES: With five left-handed hitters and three switch hitters on his roster, Jackals’ skipper Joe Calfapietra has the potential to roll out a lineup consisting of eight players who bat from the left side of the plate.

THREE HOMERS SPARK JACKALS COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN IN HOME OPENERMay 31 Recap

Little Falls, N.J. – The New Jersey Jackals used a trio of home runs to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Newark Bears, 7-6, in Tuesday night’s home opener at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Jackals took their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning when center fielder Chris White followed a leadoff double from right fielder Jeremy Slayden by crushing a two-run home run onto the hill in right field. With the Jackals leading 7-6, right-hander Steve Fox entered in the bottom of the ninth inning and retired the first two hitters of the frame before southpaw Jeff Gogal picked up the game’s final out to earn his first save of the season.

Trailing 5-1 in the middle of the first inning, New Jersey plated the game’s next four runs to even the score. In the bottom of the second, Slayden launched a solo homer to right to make it 5-2. An inning later, The Jackals plated a pair of runs to pull within one when Myron Leslie doubled and scored on a Mike Jones single and Jones came around on a fielders’ choice. The Jackals tied the game at five when third baseman Nick Giarraputo con-nected on his first home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning.

Newark re-gained a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning when center fielder Tim Raines Jr. roped a one-out triple to right field following a leadoff single by catcher Billy Alvino.

Jackals’ starter Isaac Pavlik, who in the second inning passed John Kelly to become the Can-Am League’s career leader in innings pitched, was tagged for five runs (four earned) over the first two innings of the game before settling down and finishing his outing with 4 1/3 scoreless frames. Pavlik surrendered nine hits while striking out seven batters and walking just one. Newark starter Alex Smith allowed four runs on five hits in five innings. Neither starter factored in the decision with New Jersey’s Jared Locke picking up the win and Newark’s Andrew Pluta absorbing the loss after working the final three innings.

Jackal Bites: The win was the Jackals fourth straight in their home opener with their last loss coming in 2007… Argenis Reyes, who committed just two errors in 33 games with the Jackals last season, made his second error of the 2011 season in the fifth inning on Tuesday night… In the win, New Jersey collected a season-high six extra-base hits… In two starts this season, Pavlik has struck out 17 batters and walked just two.

1917 - Hank Gowdy is the first major-league player to enlist during World War I when he signs up in the Ohio National Guard. He will play until he reports for duty July 15.

1943 - Rip Sewell of the Pirates throws his dew-drop ball in a game. Sewell loops the ball 18 to 20 feet high on its way to the strike zone. Later it is called a blooper or eephus ball. The pitch is more than a gag, and Sewell is on his way to a 20-win season.
