October 2017 edition of the Wildgoose Newsletter

Positive energy is a fabulous thing, and here at Wildgoose, our staff, who thrive on success, have that positive energy in abundance following the successful completion of some extraordinary projects including: the Arts Centre in Halifax, the first two Lodges for Marston’s, and the exceptional Extra Care Home at Oulton Abbey.

In addition, we are working across various market sectors: education, specialist care, leisure, health, commercial and industrial, and building our first large residential development for Wildgoose Homes.

We are continually evolving to meet whatever challenges come our way, and bring to our clients the benefits of older heads and the enthusiasm of younger ones.

Looking forward, we have embarked on the BIM level 2 journey and commenced our largest project yet at Keighley, constructing a combined build of 69 Extra Care apartments, 50-bed care home and 51 affordable houses to the value of £17.4m.

SQUARE CHAPEL A new arts centre in West Yorkshire built by Wildgoose Construction opened its door to the public In July this year.

The £5.2m contract involved providing a new 100 seat auditorium, 66 seat café bar, changing rooms and volunteer space.

The entrance foyer has a feature etched glass frameless curtain wall by architectural artist Sarah Galloway; internally the building encompasses polished concrete throughout, with bespoke triangular lattice roofing works and copper cladding on the external façade.

Jonathan Wildgoose, Executive Chairman of Wildgoose Construction, said: “This was a really challenging project to meld together the old and the new with an eighteenth century chapel and a striking modern extension. The results are a stunning venue for the people of Halifax and we are proud of the part we played in the project.

It was also a pleasure to work with Matlock based architects Evans Vettori, and stamp the building as Made in Derbyshire.”

Square Chapel also provides access to the adjacent Piece Hall, which has recently undergone a £19m regeneration.

MARSTON’S TIMBER FRAMED LODGESMarston’s PLC is regarded by many as having the best quality of leased and tenanted pub estates in the business, and our partnership with them continues to show results with the completion of two timber-framed lodges in Blackburn and Worksop.

These fantastic new Inns offer a warm welcome to guests, where they can enjoy a comfortable stay and great pub food all day everyday.

In addition to the timber-framed lodges, we have recently completed the building of new pubs in Runcorn, Nottingham and Nantwich which takes our total of new build public houses for Marston’s to over 30.

“The local pub has always been at the heart of British community, it’s where we gather to socialise, celebrate, relax or simply enjoy a cold beer at the end of a long day. To Marston PLC that’s important, and always will be.”

OULTON ABBEY CARE HOMEWe are delighted to have completed the construction of the new 48 en-suite bedroomed Nursing Home at Oulton Abbey in Stone, Staffordshire for the English Benedictine Order of Oulton Abbey.

The Abbey is located amongst the hills of Staffordshire in the village of Oulton near Stone and has been the home to a community of Benedictine Nuns since 1853. The Nuns opened the original Residential Home in 1989 replacing a former school and retreat house.

The project was constructed using traditional building methods in the grounds of the Abbey, and with the area having been an orchard for many years, retaining walls had no foundations, they were held in place with decades of vegetation and root mass. Excavation would affect the natural balance, and with our client’s agreement, we used contiguous piling to protect and remove risk of collapse, stitching the walls with ties to the bored piles, and grouted gaps to form a watertight retaining wall that will last for many years.

BIM LEVEL 2 As a market-leading contractor, undertaking challenging builds, we continuously ensure that standards across our company are, and remain, high and consistent by boosting skills through on-going training and professional development (CPD’s).

Our objective is to target skills that meet the needs of our operational delivery, occupational health and safety, individual

career aspirations and meeting market place expectations. With these key factors as our drivers, we have invested in software and training to meet the requirements to achieve BIM Level 2 as defined in PAS1192-2:2013.

SOLAR PV INSTALLATION In April 2017, Wildgoose Construction installed a 29.95kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) energy system at our head office, Horsefair House, Alfreton.

As part of our Environmental Management System; maintained in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001; we monitor and review our effectiveness and strive for continual improvement in the achievement of our eco-friendly aims and objectives. These

aims include the reduction of fossil fuel consumption whilst increasing the use of low embodied carbon products and technologies.

The decision to install renewable technology supports our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and switching, as a forward thinking business, to greener habits.

Our PV array generates, per week, approximately 465kWh of electricity, realising between 54%- 26% decreases on main electricity usage, which equates to an average tangible cash saving of £3500 per annum.
