NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008.

OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 sea-sons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed New-ark 7-6.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring train-ing. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yan-kees’ organization.

FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addi-tion to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodg-ers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

JACKALS WIN FOG-SHORTENED SERIES-OPENER IN FIRST TRIP TO ROCKLANDFriday, June 17 Recap

Pomona, N.Y. – Trailing 3-0 at the end of the first inning, the New Jersey Jackals plated seven unanswered runs before a thick fog forced an early end to their debut at Provident Bank Park as they defeated the expansion Rockland Boulders 7-3 on Friday night.

The contest, which started 30 minutes late due to heavy rain throughout the lower Hudson Valley earlier in the day, went into a delay with two outs in the eighth inning immediately following a bloop two-run single to left field off the bat of Jackals’ shortstop Mike DeJesus which the Rockland defense struggled to locate. The decision to finally call the game was made just before 11 p.m., roughly 50 minutes after the teams were pulled off the field.

Rockland broke through early against New Jersey starter Ryan Kulik. Following back-to-back infield singles to begin the bottom of the first inning, Vic Buttler lined a three-run home run into the short porch in right field to give the Boulders a 3-0 lead. However, that’s all the offense Rockland would manager against Kulik, who stranded seven runners on base through five innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Kulik (1-0) picked up his first Jackals’ win with Jared Locke and Steve Fox combining to toss two shutout innings of relief. Fox recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the seventh to notch his first save of the year.

Trailing 3-0, the Jackals evened the score in the third inning against Rockland starter Roger Lincoln, who took the loss to fall to 1-2. After Mike Jones reached on a one-out hit by pitch and Nick Giarraputo doubled to left, Jones scored on an infield single off the bat of Kris Sanchez. The next batter, Chris Anderson, rifled a ball be-tween the legs of shortstop Jermel Lomack to push Giarraputo across and make it a 3-2 contest. Later in the frame, an Argenis Reyes RBI double knotted the score at 3-3.

The Jackals took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning when Giarraputo led off with his third home run of the season into the left field bleachers. In the sixth inning, Anderson’s first homer of the year extended the Jackals’ lead to 5-3.

That score held until the eighth inning, when Rockland reliever Brett Carroll entered in the fog, surrendered a double to Giarraputo with one out, walked Anderson with two outs, and yielded the DeJesus two-run single to cap the scoring prior to the teams being pulled off the field.

Giarraputo paced the New Jersey offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, and three runs scored.

Jackal Bites: At 12-9, the Jackals are three games above .500 for the first time this season and have now taken four of five meetings with Rockland... The Boulders (6-12) have lost nine of their last 10 contests overall.

1972 - By a 5-3 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court confirms lower court rulings in the Curt Flood case, upholding baseball’s exemption from antitrust laws and the legitimacy of its reserve clause. Its deci-sion is narrowly construed, however, and leaves the way open for legislation or col-lective bargaining to undercut the reserve system.

1975 - Boston rookie Fred Lynn drives in ten runs with three home runs, a triple, and a single during a 15-1 drubbing of Detroit. Lynn’s 16 total bases tie an A.L. record.

1976 - Commissioner Bowie Kuhn voids the A’s sales, totaling $3.5 million, of Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox and Vida Blue to the Yankees, saying they are ‘not in the best interest of baseball.’ A’s owner Charlie Finley files a $10 million damage suit against Kuhn, and will refuse to use any of the three players until June 27.
