Young at Heart Friday, March 1512:00 - 2:30 pm at the church

Get into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with Peg Black & her “mu-sic machine.” You’ll be tapping your toes as Peg plays favorite Irish tunes, along with old favorites on the accordian. A catered lunch ($9.50) will be served at noon and the program will begin at 1:00 pm. A love offering will be taken.

Reservations are due to Gloria Sempsrott (446-5357) or SueGibson (442-7555) by March 10.

Ballroom Dance Classes at SecondBeginning March 19

So you think you want to dance? Beginning basic instructions and practice for foxtrot and swing steps will be offered at no cost beginning on March 19 and concluding on April 9. Classes will be held on each Tuesday evening during that time from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in Hallelujah Hall.

Due to space limitations, registration is limited to ten couples. Please contact Larry Roderick at (217) 759-7434 to enroll.

POWER. What does that word cause you to think of? The power of nature, or how much power a car has, or the power of words, or the influence of a powerful individual? We talk about power in a lot of different ways; that was a powerful speech, America is the last “super-power,” some advertisers even talk about the power of certain cleaning agents.

The Apostle Paul wrote about power in Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Did you see that? Power that is at work within us. Not our power, but His power? I recently read a book entitled, “Taking God At His Word,” which deals with trusting the promises of God in relationship to our finances. I was reminded again how many times God has promised in this area and others to do things in us and through us that are beyond our imagination.

This month we are going to be thinking about power, and this will culminate with our Easter service on March 31 at the Davis S. Palmer Arena. This is a day where we will celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior and invite the com-munity to come and hear the Gospel. Our theme this year is Unstoppable Love, and that is such a good and needed theme that we are going to develop the idea of “Unstoppable” throughout the month of March. Our God is unstoppable, and He is on the move, and we get to be a part of that. Just think, you as an individual can be strengthened by God for the work He is going to do through you. You can make a difference by your prayers, witnessing, giving, and Christ-like example.

The first Sunday in March will deal with the Unstoppable Church. Remember Jesus said that not even the gates of death would stand against His church. What do you think the Lord wants to do in our communities? What do you think He wants to do about the brokenness, pain, rebellion, and lostness that is all around us? It is when we as a church

step out on faith and begin to tackle some God-sized projects that God’s power becomes evident in us.

To help us get ready for Easter, there will be some special studies and devotions available for you. We are going to have a very spe-cial prayer and Communion service on Good Friday at the Arena. We are going to encourage you to fast and pray in preparation for this special celebration. And of course we are asking you to begin inviting your friends and family to join you for Easter at the Arena where God’s power can work to change lives.

Again this year we will be taking up our special Easter offering on Palm Sunday. If God has blessed you, I encour-age you to give. The first $5,000 of the offering will go to help with expenses at the Arena, and the remainder of the offering this year will be going to Love INC (in the name of Christ). The Missions Team made this recommendation to the Elders, and they agreed (as I do) that this is a very worthy ministry to support. Love INC works with us and other churches to help meet benevolent needs in our communities. Several from here at Second are involved in that ministry.

I hope you can be here every Sunday in March; and save this date - Sunday, April 28. We will have one service at Danville High School to report on our last strategic plan, to present to you some exciting plans for the future, and to share a great way to identify who we are at Second. I believe God is on the move and His power is at work in us!

Meals on WheelsI really appreciate all of you who signed up to help with Meals on Wheels. You do a great job and are a blessing to many. One of our volunteers is sick and under going chemotherapy and may not be able to deliver meals as she had planned. If you would be willing to fill in for her, please call Judy at 431-2711.

The book for March is Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg. This is not necessarily a Christian book, but it is a delight to read. Read it and come and share in the prayer, discussion, fellowship and food.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY

Judy MentzerUNSTOPPABLE is Second Church’s theme for the month of March. Behind this theme is the idea that throughout history God’s desire to bring about His purpose and plan in our lives has been a passionate and UNSTOPPABLE pursuit. Nowhere is this truth more vividly illustrated than in the stories found in the Bible. Therefore, during the month of March, several Adult Bible Fellowship Classes* will be engaged in a Bible study called The Bible 30-Day Experience.

The Bible 30-Day Experience is based on the made-for-television miniseries called, appropriately enough, The Bible, which begins airing Sunday night, March 3, and continues the following four Sunday nights on The History Channel. The Bible miniseries brings to life many of the key stories and characters found in Genesis through Revelation.

During The Bible 30-Day Experience, participating classes will explore some of the most inspiring and powerful Bible sto-ries featured in the series. Using a combination of scripture passages and stunning video clips from The Bible miniseries, this study will explore the scarlet thread of God’s redemption through Jesus in an inspiring and thought-provoking way. The classes will also examine these Bible stories to discover the personal application found in scripture.

We leave at 6:00 that morning and are home by 6:00 in the evening. Nicole Johnson is the speaker this year. Many of us have heard her at Women of Faith Conferences and know that you will enjoy listening to her.

As always, the church will pay half of the registration fee for any regular attend-ing child of Second Church to attend one camp this summer. Preschool Vacation Bible SchoolOnce again this summer, our church building will be abound with sounds of laughter, singing and learning as our preschool children have a Vacation Bible School just for them, the week of June 3 – 6 (Monday – Thursday) from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Make plans to bring your child, grandchildren or your neighbors and encourage them to have fun learning all about God’s love for them. If you have not already done so, let Judy Mentzer know that you are available to help in one of the many areas that require help for this wonderful week to happen!

Vacation Bible Camp (VBC)Mark your calendars now for our V.B.C. program held at Hanging Rock on Fri-day and Saturday, June 7 and 8. V.B.C. is for all children who have completed Kindergarten – 4th grade, and we hope to see you (kids and parents) there!

Ready or Not...Here We Come!The Children’s Ministry Department is preparing for our move to the Palmer Arena for our annual Easter service, and we need everyone to be aware of what will happen and how you can help.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN? The “Kids World” (Children’s Programming for Easter) will host the nursery through Preschool classes only. Kindergarten and older children will sit with their parents or family in the Arena.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Volunteer to help in one (or more) of the following areas:

• Registration workers• Nursery caregivers• Preschool helpers for the 2 & 3 or 4 & 5 year-old

classes• Setting up the children’s classrooms at the

Arena on Saturday, March 30• Returning the church/daycare classrooms

Pray for the children and the Children’s Ministry volun-teers, that Easter at the Arena will be a safe and secure environment where children will be loved and hear the amazing news of God’s great love for them!

High School Sky Zone TripSunday, March 1011:30 am - 8:00 pm

The High School group will be going to Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park in Fishers, IN on March 10. Plan to leave from church around 11:30 am and return around 8:00 pm. The cost is $20 to jump plus money for two meals. Bring an extra change of clothes. In order to attend, students must turn in their $20 and return two release forms by Sunday, March 3. Forms are available at the Student Ministry Board or on the student ministry page of the church website - www.secondchurchofchrist.org.

St. James Food PantryWednesday, March 20

High school students will be serving at the food pantry in place of our normal Wednesday night programming. Students can meet at St. James United Methodist Church anytime after 4:30 (on the corner of Vermilion and Williams). If students need a ride, the church van will leave the church parking lot at 6:00 pm and return by 7:45 pm.

Friday and Saturday, March 1 - 2Bloomington, IL

5th and 6th grade students will leave for SuperStart on Friday, March 1, at 3:00 pm and will arrive back to the church on Saturday, March 2, around 6:00 pm.

Students will be staying in a house, so bring all the toiletries and tow-els that you will need in addition to a sleeping bag and pillows. Also, bring money for three meals and don’t forget your Bible!

Saturday and Sunday, April 13 - 14Anderson, IN

7th-8th grade students will leave for this event on Saturday, April 13, at 12:00 noon and will arrive back to the church on Sunday, April 14, around 7:00 pm.

Students will be staying in a hotel, but some may need to sleep on the floor. If you are willing, bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Bring money for 3 meals and don’t forget your Bible!

Wednesday NightsDuring the month of March, the Junior High will be doing a study called, “Boys and Girls!” During this study students will be separated into boys and girls groups to discuss being a Godly man and a Godly woman. Top-ics will include sex, dating, respect, popularity, and peer pressure. Bring your students out for this important series during the month of March!
