• Dative reflexive pronouns are identical to the dative personal pronouns except for the thirdperson singular and plural and the second person (formal) pronoun Sie.

• The following verbs use dative reflexive pronouns. The infinitive form includes the reflexive pronoun sich. The word etwas refers to the direct object of the sentence and is in the accusative case.

• When the dative reflexive pronoun and the accusative object (etwas in the infinitives above) are used together in a sentence, the accusative object comes directly after the reflexive pronoun.
Ich kann mir ein Essen ohne Fleisch nicht vorstellen.I can’t imagine a meal without meat.

• A number of verbs may be used either reflexively or non-reflexively. When they are reflexive, dative reflexive pronouns are used to indicate an indirect object. The person being referred to is in the dative and the object is in the accusative case. In these examples, the dative pronoun does not have to be mentioned, but it is very common in spoken German.
Kochen Sie (sich) jeden Morgen einen Kaffee?Do you make (yourself) coffee every morning?
Er kauft (sich) ein Eis in der Eisdiele.He’s buying (himself) an ice cream at the ice cream parlor.

• Using dative reflexive pronouns with verbs that can be used reflexively or non-reflexively clarifies the speaker’s intent.

• Dative reflexive pronouns are often used when talking about parts of the body. In English expressions such as I brush my teeth, the possessive pronoun is used to indicate whose teeth. In German, such expressions use a dative reflexive pronoun to designate whose teeth are being brushed. The dative reflexive pronoun mir replaces the possessive adjective mein.
Ich putze mir die Zähne.I brush my teeth.
Sie wäscht sich die Hände.She washes her hands.

• Dative reflexive pronouns are also used with verbs that require the dative case, such as widersprechen and helfen.
