• Those over 60 or those who are at risk are strongly encouraged to avoid attending public Mass. Sunday Mass will still be posted online.

MASS TIMES:We will adjust the schedule over time, but this week's Masses will be:

Monday-Saturday: 7 a.m.Wednesday: 6:15 p.m. in Spanish

Sunday: 7 & 9:30 a.m. in English, noon in SpanishThere will be no Saturday evening Mass at this time.

The doors of church will be unlocked 30 minutes prior to each Mass. The church will be locked after each Mass while it is being sanitized.

PROCEDURES:• Everyone is required to wear a mask during Mass except for the

brief moment of receiving Communion. CDC guidelines state that children under two or anyone unable to remove their own mask should not wear them. There will be no other exceptions to the requirement to wear a mask.

• Enter through the back doors of church, not the side door. Doors will be propped open.

• Ushers will escort you to your seat. Please sit where they indicate.

• Do not congregate in the church or vestibule before or after Mass.

• Priests will not to greet parishioners before or after Mass.

• Families are to maintain six-foot distancing between their family and other families or individuals at all times.

• We will NOT have servers at Masses.

• There will be a table in the vestibule with a basket for the collection. Ushers will not collect the offertory during Mass.

• For Communion, everyone will be asked to form a single-fi le line down the center of the aisle, splitting to the left or right when you reach the front. Six-foot distances will be marked on the fl oor. Please follow the directions of the ushers.

• The Precious Blood will not be distributed for Communion.

• Communicants are to receive the Host in the hand, thereby avoiding the Communion minister’s fi ngers being exposed to saliva or particles exhaled from the communicant’s mouth.

• At the end of Mass, please exit in a safe and orderly fashion, maintaining appropriate distance.

• After everyone has exited, the doors will be locked while the church is sanitized. Once the church is sanitized, the doors will be unlocked and propped open for the next Mass.

4 May 16-17, 2020 St. Charles Bor omeo Catholic Church

Today’s Gospel is a continuation of last week’s Gospel: Jesus is speaking to

his disciples at the Last Supper. In today’s reading Jesus offers encouragement to his disciples, who will soon see him crucifi ed. He reassures them that even though he will leave them, he will not abandon them. Instead he will send them the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, through whom the disciples will continue to live in union with Jesus.

Jesus uses the term Advocate to describe the Holy Spirit, whom the disciples will receive. Another word used to describe the Holy Spirit is Paraclete, a legal term meaning “one who offers defense for another.” Note that Jesus says that he will send “another Advocate.” Jesus himself is the fi rst advocate, interceding for his disciples with the Father.

In today’s reading Jesus contrasts his impending departure with the permanence

of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will leave to return to the Father, but the Holy Spirit will remain with the disciples.

Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples will come to know and appreciate the unity of the Son and the Father. They will also understand that they too participate in the communion between the Father and the Son: “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you” (John 14:20).

Today’s reading is one example of the contrast that John’s Gospel presents between the community of disciples, to whom God will reveal himself, and the unbelieving world, which will remain in darkness.

The unbelieving world cannot accept the “Spirit of truth,” whom the disciples will receive. Only through the Spirit will God’s revelation and love be known.
