Having played with greats such asFrank Sinatra and Jack McDuff, TheJim Snidero Quartet performedTuesday night in the Grand Ballroom ofthe Martin Luther King Jr. UniversityUnion with the EIU Jazz Combos.
The concert began with the threeEastern Jazz Combos. All members ofthe combos were Eastern students, andeach combo played three songs. Thegroups, with directors Simon Rowe,Mike Jones and Travis Wesley, all con-tained at least five musicians playinginstruments from trumpet to bass.
The concert started at 6:30 p.m. witheach combo playing their own 20 minuteto half hour set, and ended at 7:45 p.m.Combo 1, the last combo to perform, willplay at the National Jazz Festival in
Dallas next month. They have alsoreceived the Most Outstanding GroupAward at a performance at ElmhurstCollege earlier this year. Snidero, EIUJazz Combo’s special guest, also gavethe group recognition before his per-formance.
“It’s refreshing to hear a young groupsuch as themselves playing swing jazz.Their music was authentic, convincingjazz,” Snidero said.
Tony Wong, a freshman music educa-tion and jazz studies major, said the EIUJazz Combo usually has one concert amonth at Eastern.
“Combo I is always very good; youknow what to expect, but tonight theyperformed the best. You know it’s goodwhen you get goosebumps listening tothe music,” Wong said.
Snidero has been playing the alto sax-ophone for 20-25 years, mainly in New
York City, but also across the globe. Hehas traveled worldwide not only as asoloist, but as an educator as well.Snidero made his name with Japanesepianist and composer Toshiko Akyoshi,who is a prime alto saxophone player.
Simon Rowe, instructor of jazz stud-ies and piano, as well as the director ofEIU Combo 1, said Snidero has beenhere three or four times, and letsEastern know when he will be in thearea.
The Jim Snidero Quartet took stageafter a brief intermission, playing formore than an hour, with each membergiving an impressive solo. The Quartetplayed six or seven songs, giving theaudience a variety of material fromSnidero’s released CDs. With Peter Zackon piano, Paul Gill on bass, and JoeTroser on drums, the Quartet played anoutstanding performance.

Ryan M. Galloway, 21, 106 W Lincoln Ave., was arrest-ed Thursday for driving under the influence of alcohol,illegal transportation, operating an uninsured motor vehi-cle and driving without lights when required on the 100block of W Lincoln Avenue.
Larry Brandon Parke, 18, 420 N Division St., wasarrested March 16 for minor consumption.
Robert D. Jr. Carpenter, 18, 761 11th St., was arrestedMarch 16 for minor consumption.
Nicholas M. Dundee, 18, 15372 E County 420N Road,was arrested March 16 for minor consumption.
Matthew D. Murfee, 21, 823 Fourth St., was arrestedMarch 13 for driving while under the influence of alco-hol, having an alcohol blood concentration of .08 percentor more, improper lane usage and operating an uninsuredmotor vehicle at the intersection of Fourth Street andHarrison Avenue.

The University Board, the Women’s ResourceCenter and the Panhellenic Council are hosting a self-defense lecture and demonstration at 7 p.m.Wednesday in the Grand Ballroom of the MartinLuther King Jr. University Union.
The speaker will be Eastern alumna Erin Weed whohas trained with many well-known professional self-defense instructors in the country.
Weed formed the organization called Girls FightBack! The organization is designed to provide knowl-edge to the average girl or woman who wants to feelsafe and be able to protect herself from an attacker orany other event that could pose a threat.
“I founded the program after Shannon McNamarawas murdered and that was my initial motivation,”Weed said.
Weed will be doing a 90-minute seminar to teach thebasics of self-defense and hope to encourage people tokeep learning more.
Her training includes car jacking situations, multi-ple assailant attacks, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga,knife and firearm training and criminal psychology.Weed also is certified by the American Women’s SelfDefense Association and is a certified Personal Trainerthrough the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Sheis also a trained Confined Area Survival Tacticsinstructor through the Modern Warrior Academy.
“I am constantly training with people who are veryknowledgeable,” Weed said. “I train with the New YorkPolice Department.”
Weed speaks to colleges, high schools, churches,women’s groups and other groups all over the countryabout protecting themselves.
“Last year I did 65 programs for Girls Fight Back,”Weed said.
Since graduating from Eastern, Weed found herselfin the area of New York City trying to pursue thedream of a job in the entertainment business. She hassince turned her focus to Girls Fight Back! and herwriting on similar topics.
