The Grant Ranch, once owned by Charles Howard of Seabiscuit fame, is one of California’s truly historic ranches. Now known as the Grant Ranch, it was originally known as Rancho Arroyo Seco and was given to Teodocio Yorba by Governor Juan Alvarado in 1840. The original Grant was 48,857 acres but portions have been sold off over time. Today there is 6,473.5 +/- acres available for sale. The ranch is made up of oak woodlands, open grazing flats, some manzanita, with native grasses. The ranch would support either cow/calf or yearling operations with several notable ranching operations as neighbors.
The Grant Ranch is located in Ione, CA in Amador County. The ranch has many access points along Highway 104, Irish Hill Road, Michigan Bar Road, and Carbondale Road. The ranch is easily accessible from Highway 99 off of the Twin Cities/Highway 104 exit and is roughly 25 minutes from the interchange. The ranch’s location is beneficial to cattlemen in that it is centrally located and easy trucking hauls to California, Nevada, and Oregon’s summer grazing hubs. The ranch is 20+/- minutes from the county seat, Jackson, CA, 25+/- minutes to Galt, home of Cattlemen’s Livestock Market, and 45+/- minutes to Sacramento. Amador County Airport in Jackson CA is 15+/- minutes away and has a 3,401’ runway and can support medium sized jets and has fuel and hangars. Mather Airport has one of the largest runways on the West Coast at 11,300’ and is 35+/- minutes away. It has full service FBO and a 24-hour air traffic control tower. For commercial air travel, Sacramento International Airport is roughly one hour away.

Typically run as a winter grazing ranch, the Grant Ranch has run yearlings and cows and calves. Cattle are typically shipped in in the late fall and early winter, and shipped out in the late spring, depending on annual rainfall and drinking water. Cattle are watered with seasonal creeks, ponds, and streams, with Willow Creek, Laguna Creek, and Dry Creek running through the ranch. A prospective Buyer could explore the potential of planting some of the ranch to vineyard, as Amador County has become known as one of California’s premier wine destinations with several notable wineries in the region.
The thickest part of the ranch has manzanita on it, but with the Cal Fire Academy being one of the ranch’s neighbors, they have been in an ongoing several year brush removal program. Cal Fire sends out people to learn to operate equipment and remove the brush, with a plan to pile it and then burn it in the winter months. It is reported that Cal Fire wants this to continue for the foreseeable future.
The ranch has some upside potential with a reported 1 billion ton in clay deposits with a few mines on the ranch. It also has a large chunk of industrial zoned ground with rail service and a PG&E gas line. Information on the mining operations and commercial zoning available upon request.
