CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

CHAPTER 2

PRODUCT FEATURES

2.1 DescriptionThe Model 6527 is a portable multi-range megohmmeter capable ofmeasuring insulation resistance from1kΩ to 4000MΩ. Ithas threeuserselectabletestvoltagesof250V,500Vand1000V.The Model 6527 also features a continuity test function with audiblebeeperforresistancesunder35Ω,andanoverloadprotectionof600Vrms.Inadditionitcanmeasureresistanceupto400kΩ.TheTESTbuttonhasanassociatedlockingfeatureforcontinuoustestsuptothreeminutes,eliminatingtheneedtomanuallyholddownthebutton.This lightweight, easy-to-use megohmmeter can be used for mostcommonlyperformed insulation tests, suchason cables, switchgears,motors,DCgenerators,powertoolsandsmallappliances.

2.5 Button Functions

NOTE: For insulation measurements, the HOLD feature is automatically activated after each measurement.

CHAPTER 3

OPERATION

3.1 Starting the InstrumentTurn the rotary switch to the appropriate function.All segments of thedisplay will light for a few seconds. The screen corresponding to thechosen function will then appear. Themegohmmeter is now ready formeasurements.

3.2 Stopping the InstrumentToturnthemegohmmeteroffmanually,turntheswitchtoOFF.

Ifleftunusedfor10minutes,theunitwillturnoffautomatically.At9min-utes,fivebeepswarnthatthemegohmmeterisabouttobeturnedoff.Toturnbackon,pressanybuttonontheunit.

A long press on the HOLD button at startup deactivates the Auto-offfunction.

3.3 Insulation Resistance Testing (MΩ Range)

3.3.1 Test VoltageNopublishedstandard tellswhichvoltage tochoose foranygiven test.However,publishedrecommendationscouldbesummarizedasfollows:

3.3.2 Spot TestingAsageneralruleinspottesting,testvoltageshouldbeapplieduntilnovariation in reading is noted for 15 seconds, or applied for a fixed 60seconds.What minimum value should be measured?TheIEEEstandardNo.43-1974statesthatitisimpossibletospecifythevalueofinsulationresistanceatwhichawindingwillfailelectrically,butonmotors,minimumreadingsgenerallystatedare:

Thereisnofixedfigurefordeterminingwhatisgoodandbadinresistancereadings,butagoodguidewouldbe1megohmforeveryonehundredoperatingvoltsapplied,asaminimumfigure.Thisappliestomotorsandtransformers. When the insulation resistance gets this low, an electri-calbreakdowncanbeexpectedatanytime,andrewindingorreplacingshouldbeconsidered.It isnotunusual forawinding tobe10 to100 times therecommendedminimumvalue(IEEEStd.#43-1974:Recommended Practice for Testing Insulation Resistance of Rotating Machinery), but this varies with tem-peratureandhumidity.

3.3.3 Ratio TestingIn timed resistance testing (Dielectric Absorption Ratio), readings aretakenat30and60secondstoobtainthedielectricabsorptionratio.

Thistestisusefultoincreasetheaccuracyofspottesting.Ingeneral,aratioof1.25:2orbettershouldberequired.Aratiobelowthisindicatesthatrepairisprobablyneeded.

Remember,aDCinsulationtestmaybeusedforacceptancetesting,butismorecommonlyusedtocheckthegradualdeteriorationofequipmentoveritslife.Consultyourequipmentmanufacturerforspecifictestortestvoltageifnotknown.

Insulationresistancedecreaseswithmoisture,temperatureandageandshouldberecordedovertimeatagiventemperatureandcorrected.

3.3.4 Tips For Successful Insulation Resistance Testing

• Check with the equipment manufacturer for factory insulationresistancereadings.

• Donotrelyoninsulationresistancetestingaloneasproofofwind-ingconditions.

• Donotexpectthesamevalueforallpartsofallmachines.• Observe consistent test time duration, recognizing that total

currentthroughinsulationundertestwillvarywithtime.• Correctallreadingsproperlytoastandardreferencetemperature

(seeIEEEStd.#43-1974,TemperatureCorrectionCurve).• Knowwhatyouaretesting.Isolatethepieceofequipmentfrom

othercircuitry.• Watchtrendsratherthanrelyingonsingle“spot”readings.

3.3.5 Insulation Measurement - ConnectionsFigure3-1showstheconnectionstomeasuretheinsulationofonecon-ductortotheotherconductors.Thecableshouldbedisconnectedatbothendstoavoidleakagethroughswitchboardsandpanels.

Figure3-5shows theconnectionsfor measuring the insulation ofa three-phase line to ground byconnecting the jumpers betweenphases.This gives a reading of allconductorsatonce.Ifaloadsuchasamotor,heater,etc.,isattachedto theotherendof the line, itwillreadtheloadresistancetogroundatthesametime.Byremovingthejumpers,readingscanbemadebetweentheindivid-ualconductorsandground.

3.3.6 Insulation Resistance Measurements on MotorsFigure3-6showsreadingtheresistancetogroundofathree-phasemotorwinding.Sincethethree-phasemotorsareinternallyconnected,itisonlynecessarytoconnectoneleadtothemotorleadandtheotherleadtothemotorframeasshown.

Figure 3-7 shows thewindings of a three-phasemotorseparated.Sometimes this can bedone at the lead termi-nals, while other timesthe end bells must beremoved to get at theleadwiresofthecoils.Byconnectingthemego-hmmeter as shown, thephase insulation resis-tancevaluecannowbedetermined.Read between phases“A”and“B”,then“B”and“C”,then“C”and“A”.

3.4 Measuring MΩ Insulation Resistance• Turnthefunctionswitchtodesiredtestvoltagerange(250V,500Vor

1000V).

• Connecttheblacktestleadtothe(COM)terminalandtheredonetothe(VΩ)terminal.

• Connectthetestleadtosampleundertest.

Warning: Do not activate the test before the leads are properly connected to the sample under test.

Do not remove the test leads from the sample under test before the discharge process is completed.

• Press theTEST button and hold it down until themeasurement isstabilized. The display is automatically locked (automatic HOLD). The symbol lights during the measurement indicating activevoltageoutput.

• Themeasuredresistancevalueisdisplayedonthescreen.TheHOLD symbol is lit.

3.6 Continuity Measurements

Warning: Tests are to be carried out on non-energized circuits only!

TheModel6527generatesa200mADCcurrentbetweentheVΩandCOMterminals.ItthenmeasuresthevoltageacrossthetwoterminalsandfromitdeducesthevalueofR=V/I.

• Turnthefunctionswitchto .

• Connecttheblacktestleadtothe(COM)terminalandtheredonetothe(V-Ω)terminal.

• Connecttothesampleundertest.

• Themegohmmeterwill continue generating a test current (200mA)untilitisswitchedoutofthecontinuityfunction.Turnthemegohmme-terOFFwhenfinishedandbeforetouchingtheleadends.

• Whenthereareinductiveorcapacitiveelementsinthetestedsample,itmaybeuseful to invert thepolaritybyswitchingthe leadsaroundonthesample.Takebothmeasurementsandusetheiraverageasameasurementresult.

3.6.1 Lead Resistance Compensation

Tosetthecompensationoftheresistanceofthemeasurementleads,pro-ceedasfollows:

• Short-circuittheblackandredleadsconnectedtothemeter.

• Hold theZERO/ button downuntil the display unit indicates thelowestvalue.The symbolwilldisplay.

• ReleasetheZERO/ button.Thecorrectionvalueisdisplayedandstored.

NOTE: Valid in VAC,VDC,Ω and kΩpositionsonly

3.7 Resistance MeasurementsThe Model 6527 generates a DC voltage between theV-Ω and COM terminals. It thenmeasures thecurrentacross these two terminalsandfromitcalculatesthevalueofR=V/I.

• Turn the rangeswitch to kΩ.The test voltage isgeneratedwithoutpressingthetestbutton.

• Connecttheblacktestleadtothe(COM)terminalandtheredonetothe(V-Ω)terminal.

• Connectthetestprobetipstothesampleundertest.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING:

• Formaintenanceuseonlyspecifiedreplacementparts.

• To avoid electrical shock, do not attempt to perform any servicingunlessyouarequalifiedtodoso.

• Toavoidelectricalshockand/ordamagetotheinstrument,donotgetwaterorotherforeignagentsintothecase.TurntheinstrumentOFFanddisconnecttheunitfromallthecircuitsbeforeopeningthecase.

4.1 Battery Replacement

WARNING: Make sure that no terminals are connected and that the switch is in the OFF position before opening the back of the instrument.

The symbolindicatesthatthebatteriesarelowandmustbereplaced.Whenthissymbolappearsonthedisplayunit,theinstrumentcontinuestooperateforafewminutes,andthenturnsitselfoff.

Toreplacethebatteries,proceedasfollows:

• SettheswitchtoOFF.

• Disconnectthemeasurementleadsfromtheinputterminals.

• Usingascrewdriver,unscrewthethreescrewsofthebatterycom-partmentcoverlocatedonthebackofthehousing.

• Placethenewbatteriesinthecompartmentmakingsurethatthepolaritiesarecorrect.

• Screwthecoverbackontothehousing.

4.2 Fuse Replacement

WARNING: Make sure that no terminals are connected and that the switch is in the OFF position before opening the back of the instrument.

Toreplacethefuse,proceedasfollows:

• SettheswitchtoOFF.

• Disconnectthemeasurementleadsfromtheinputterminals.

• Usingascrewdriver,unscrewthethreescrewsofthebatterycom-partmentcoverlocatedonthebackofthehousing.

• Removetheblownfuseusingascrewdriver.

• Insertanewfuse(HRCFF0.5A–600V–6.3x32),thenscrewthecoverbackontothehousing.

4.3 Cleaning

WARNING: Make sure that no terminals are connected and the range switch is in the OFF position.

• Clean thebodyof the instrumentwitha cloth lightlymoistenedwithsoapywater.

• Wipecleanwithadampcloth.

• Drywithadryclothorforcedair.

• Donotusealcohol,solventsorhydrocarbons.
