After complaints from local videotraders that they were being subjected tounfair competition from rivals selling orrenting out counterfeit video films, localofficers have spent a month investigat-ing various shops and clubs, resulting inat least four charges under the 1968

Polydor, EMI, top chart surveyDURING A quarter in which itscored strongly with releases byRoxy Music, the Jam, Vangelis andShakatak, Polydor ran out as TopCompany Albums in a Record Busi-ness survey of chart and sales actionduring April -June. Top CompanySingles was EMI, which enjoyedthe quarter's best selling title with`Ebony And Ivory' by Paul McCart-ney and also notched another Top20 entry with 'Hungry Like TheWolf by Duran Duran. Indeed,EMI came through the quarter infine style with hits from McCart-ney, Iron Maiden, Duran Duranand Queen contributing to puttingthe company into the runner-upposition behind Polydor in the

album survey. Virgin, last quarter'srunaway label leader on albums andsingles, still maintained a credit-able performance - number twoSingles Label and number fourAlbums Label, sections won byEpic (singles) and Polydor(albums).

A notable second quarter per-formance was by the independentMute label, which shipped thesecond best-selling single of theperiod with 'Only You' by Yazoo,predictably the leading indie labelsingle, as well. Top disco singlewas 'Forget-Me-Nots' by PatriceRushen (Elektra), while Tight Fit's`Fantasy Island' headed the airplaysurvey.

MU close to session rates dealA NEW agreement betwen the BPI andthe Musicians Union on recording ses-sion rates is close to finalisation.

Due to go into effect on July 1, theunion had still to ratify the new terms asRB went to press, but it is understoodthat the standard session rate will under-go a rise of rather less than the inflationrate.

However, the classical session rate is

likely to rise by slightly less, in order tokeep costs down and keep Britishorchestras in competition with theirforeign, often subsidised, rivals.

Also included in the proposed agree-ment will be a new promotional film orvideo clip clause which, in return forhigh fees to musicians, will enablerecord companies to make wider use ofthe videos.

Trades Descriptions Act.The cases are due to come before local

magistrates in around three monthstime. If the traders are found guilty theyface a fine of up to £1,000 or threemonths jail.

The Liverpool trading standardsoffice has previously mounted success-ful prosecutions under the Act againstshop -keepers who sold counterfeit Levijeans and feel confident that videos fallinto the same section of trades descrip-tion.

Until now, the BPI has used the civilcourts in its anti -piracy crack -down - anexpensive, though well -tried route

which has brought success against themajor illegal operators, although it haspreviously appealed for criminal re-medies against the counterfeiters.

Said BPI director general JohnDeacon: "We have tended to take thecivil law route against pirates rather thanusing criminal remedies. The videoindustry goes for the criminal aspect,because the video piracy problem isgetting out of hand and it is advan-tageous for them to see some of theillegal traders given prison sentences.

"However, the Trades DescriptionsAct does seem to be worth considera-tion."

Pryor takes German postas Simone heads EurodiscDAVID SIMONE has been appointedmanaging director of Arista/Ariola, suc-ceeding Andrew Pryor who is taking upthe appointment as vice-president ofAriola International, based in Munich.

Simone has been acting md for sixmonths during the illness of Pryor andhad the title of director of businessaffairs with Arista/Ariola. Previously hewas md of Gem Records, UK.

Pryor has been with Eurodisc for fiveyears, first as marketing director. Hewas first joint md and took control onCharles Levison's resignation last year.During his time as md he has beeninstrumental in the development of suchartists as Sky, The Beat and Stray Cats.

Home tape losses are £305 million, BPI tells GovernmentMOST RECENT estimate of lostsales resulting from home taping inBritain puts the figure at almost£305 million, according to the BPI'ssubmission to the Government onlast year's copyright Green Paper.

The BPI is demanding a "sub-stantial" compensatory levy onblank tapes and recording equip-ment.

"Technology has overtaken thelaw in the audio-visual field andchaos has resulted," claims theBPI, pointing out that the Copyr-ight Act, although only 25 years old,was drawn up before the inventionof the cassette recorder. The sub-mission calls for new legislation totake account of existing and futuretechnology such as the compact

disc, cable and satellite TV.Also called for are greater cri-

minal penalties for infringement ofthe Copright Act. A fine of £50 perinfringeing article and -or two years'imprisonment are suggested. TheBPI also wants the Anton Pillerorder, a key item in civil actions, tobe amended to give plaintiff theright of forcible entry. The Govern-

ment is urged to review the ques-tion of a defendents' knowledge."No defendent should have a de-fence of innocence unless he canprove he was acting lawfully."

The BPI links the problem ofhome copying and record rentaland asks the Government to imposea royalty on a rental transaction inthe same way that one is payable ona sale.

Rondelet switch toPinnacle is haltedTHE SWITCH from Spartan to Pinna-cle distribution of the Rondelet label hita snag last week when Spartan claimedthe Mansfield -based company was stillunder an exclusive sales and distributioncontract.

Although Pinnacle has been sellingRondelet product into the shops for afortnight, Spartan warned that untilnegotiations for the release of Rondeletwere complete, it would take 'necessaryaction' to protect its interests. Thiswould involve preventing the label'sproduct from being sold by eitherRondelet or Pinnacle in the UK orNorthern Ireland, pending talks.

A Pinnacle statement the previousweek said the company was currentlyselling in the new Anti-Pasti albumCaution In The Wind, plus LPs from theNervous Germans, Gaskin and The Fitsas well as a number of singles on currentrelease. Rondelet's Alan Campian wasquoted as saying: "We have grown withSpartan over the past two years but felt

in need of a change."Spartan managing director Tom

McDonnell told RB "We require 90days notice of termination of a contract,but the first we knew about this waswhen we read about it in Record Busi-ness. "Rondelet is under an exclusivesales and distribution contract withSpartan. However, it has never been ourpolicy to hold labels to their contractualobligations should a label feel it could dobetter elsewhere and providing any earlytermination is in the interests of bothparties.

"As a result of this, negotiations areunder way with a view to Rondeletobtaining an early release.

"However, these negotiations havenot yet been completed, and until theyare, Spartan intends to protect itsinterests by taking the necessary actionto prevent Rondelet product being soldby either Rondelet or Pinnacle any-where in the UK or Northern Irelandpending the outcome of the talks."

Boycott 'Nine To Five', Adam Ant tells fansDESPITE ALL the attempts of EGRecords to resist a controversy AdamAnt is advising fans to boycott therelease of 'Nine To Five' which heco -wrote with Toyah.

The single is taken from the sound-track of the film Jubilee which isreleased by EG and features both Toyahand Adam Ant - long before either was asuccess.

Initially EG intended to release thesingle as being by Adam Ant and Toyah,but at Ant's request, changed this toThe Man Eaters - the fictional name ofthe group featured in the film.

This involved scrapping 30,000 pic-ture bags and a run of dealer posterswhich had been printed.

This was not enough for Ant who lastweek issued the following statement: "I

do not wish to be associated with arecord which I believe to be sub-standard. In these circumstances I willdonate all royalties arising from therecord to Multiple Sclerosis and MusicTherapy as I do not wish to profitpersonally from what I believe to beinferior product. I would advise my fansnot to buy this record."

MerchandisingStraight's new international postTHE NEW post of director of interna-tional a&r and product at WEA has beencreated for Phil Straight with effect fromthe first of this month.

Straight has had a variety of jobs withthe WEA group including being PhilCarson's personal assistant at Atlantic,managing director of Park Lane Re-cords, international manager at WEAand most recently general manager ofthe Warner Brothers label.

TALK TALK release their debutalbum for EMI on Monday (July 12)and it is being heavily promoted. TheParty's Over will receive consumerpress advertising and there will be10 x 5 feet poster campaign in London.

TOWERBELL RECORDS this weekreleases picture disc singles by Chas &Dave and Natasha - the latter a 12 -inchdisc.

Chas & Dave's 'Margate' will be in theshops this Friday (July 9) as a picture disc(KORX 15) and the edition is limited to10,000 copies with a dealer price of £1.04.

Towerbell is also rush -releasing a 12 -inch picture disc of Iko-Iko', with anadditional track `I Still Love You'(TOWX 122). This is again limited to10,000 copies and has a dealer price of£1.52.

RCA hit trackson BowWowWowalbum from EMIEMI & RCA have agreed to sharetracks with the result that EMI willrelease an album by Bow Wow Wowon July 19 - including hit RCA singles.

In what is being described as anunprecedented co-operation betweenthe two companies EMI is releasing a16 track album with heavy promotionin the consumer press and in-store.

The EMI tracks are taken from thetape -only releases issued while theband was under contract to them. RCAis contributing 'I Want Candy' and its`B' side 'Cowboy' plus the new single`Louis Quatorze' which is being re-leased in two weeks.

RCA RECORDS has embarked on amanagement restructure and the firstresults, including the elevation to theboard of a&r head Bill Kimber, havebeen announced.

Kimber now has the newly -createdposition of divisional director of A&Rand publishing, which gives him overallcontrol of international a&r artist de-velopment and Sunbury Music.

He joined RCA in 1978 and waspromoted divisional manager of a&r UKjust over a year ago. He is responsible forsuch signings as Bucks Fizz, Bow WowWow, The Mood and Paris, plus theHooked On Classics project.

Meanwhile John Howes will not bereplaced as deputy managing director.Instead RCA will have four heads ofdepartment, with increased responsibil-ity, reporting directly to and Don Ellis.

These heads have yet to be named buttwo positions on a managerial level havebeen announced:

PUBILISHIAGEVEN BEFORE performance feesfrom Leicester Square's musical loohave started to leak through to thePerforming Right Society's coffers, theSociety is already feeling flush: PRSgross revenue for 1981 was up by 19.1percent over the previous year (to£46.8m) and gross earnings from all UKsources alone rose by 18.8 percent tosome £32m.

During a year in which the PRSadmits that "the effects of the depressedeconomic climate began to be reflectedin licensing receipts", distributable in-come from public performances in Bri-tain and the Republic of Ireland rose by17.9 percent to some £7.5m in 1981 -although part of this increase wasapparently due to a change in PRSaccounting policy. "Although fewer li-cences were cancelled than during1980," says the Society, "there waswidespread evidence of diminishing useof music in certain sectors (particularlyin industrial premises) and of a fall inlicensees' box office takings and expend-iture on music use."

Clubs, hotels, restaurants, cafes,shops, stores and pubs were growthareas for music usage in 1981 (account-ing for some 50 percent of 'generallicensing' revenue), but radio and TVperformances continued to be the big-gest money -spinners. Distributable in-come from broadcasting fees rose bynearly 14 percent to £16.8m, with theBeeb chipping in over £12.3m of it.

One company aiming to boost its sliceof the PRS share -out still further thisyear is Zomba Music. It has justconcluded worldwide, exclusive song -writing deals with Simon May (responsi-ble for Kate Robbins' More Than inLove'), Tony Waddington (co -writer ofa string of hits for The Rubettes andMac & Katie Kissoon) and EddieHowell (currently working with famedproducer Pete Belotte). The companyhas also signed worldwide deals withRondelet Records' act Anti Pasti andElectric Guitars.

Zomba Music general manager,Steven Howard, says that Simon May,Tony Waddington and Eddie Howellhave all written songs for the new TightFit album which will be released by JiveRecords in mid -August.

"We are also now very active in theR&B area," says Howard. Fewer dealers and cutout the wholesalerslust two ideas among many as tohow the beleagured independentdealer might restore profit andstability. A bitter and outspokenlook at retailing today fromRichard and Paula Wilson ofThe Out Back shop, Here-ford.

WAY BACK in 1935, when recordsarrived broken not warped, when JamesThurber was in full spate and dogsmostly listened to their masters' voices -a notable exception being one of the54-55 who passed through the Thurberhousehold called `Muggs' (`The DogThat Bit People') a French doctor,scientist and Nobel prizewinner AlexisCarrel wrote that "modern civilisationseems incapable of producing peopleendowed with imagination, intelligenceand courage."

For 'people' substitute 1982 recordcompany executives.

Take the CBS representative deputedby Maurice Oberstein to respond to ourletter last Autumn warning that inde-pendent dealers were in dead trouble.He began with "What can we do tohelp?" and ended with "All we at CBSare interested in is filling the factory andshipping a million Adam & The Ants".

What concern for dealers like us, whoover the years have sold in small townsthousands of CBS records through en-thusiasm and efficiency - 600 copies ofBridge Over Troubled Waters in threemonths to quote just one example?

Or take the PolyGram executive, whowhen asked the same question andexposed to the shortcomings of headoffice and depot (latest feat delivering 10Cure cassettes over two weeks whennine albums and one cassette wereordered), reacted sympathetically. Butwas there any effort at reparation fortime wasted or any action? Not a jot.

Compare it with EMI of yore, when atthe hint of a delivery problem DenisTungate would land on the doormatnext day. Incidentally has anyone paidtribute to EMI under the sterling CliffBusby, with outstanding reps like BobMulley, which showed by the 1981`Pound Smasher campaign' that it is stillorientated towards the small specialistshop?

The root of the problem seems to stemfrom ignorance by the majors thatthey're marketing an artistic product ofgreat depth which requires a mostintricate understanding of that productat the final retail stage.

Most multiples clearly don't begin tohave that understanding. Recently awoman came to us having scoured thetown for Harry Chapin product. No-body had even heard of him, let alonehad any stock.

How can companies justify support-ing outlets like these; with preferentialdiscounts on the cream of catalogue.Outlets which underprice hot LPs leav-ing themselves with no margin to invest

in a wider range of stock.Look at the retail business generally

and consider that Marks and Spencer'sis probably the only multiple to take itseriously, though their products are farsimpler than records. They are by nomeans cheap yet in a recession theyreported a sizeable jump in turnover andnet profit.

The picture of record retailing is nowa pretty grim one which Martin Ans-combe's fascinating review (RB, May31) highlighted.

Although this is the culmination ofthe free-for-all brought about by theabolition of rpm 10 years ago the rotreally set in for the independent in 1979when the majors, in an effort to reduceroyalty payments, put their prices up by5 percent and asked, can you believe it,the dealer to reduce his margin by thesame amount.

Because of the spectre of home tapingand parallel imports the dealer held, ifnot lowered, the retail price for 10 yearswhile unit sales fell and costs rose.Outcome: decline in profit for theindependent and no appreciable im-provement for the manufacturer since1978.

Are we in fact heading for the cottageindustry forecast by Roger Greenawaywithin 10 years, or is there light at theend of this long dark tunnel?

We feel there is. It can be begun byreducing the number of outlets from thereputed 6,000, a large proportion ofwhich are a disgrace to the productthey're handling, and appointing deal-ers in each town like high class hi-fi andcamera manufacturers. Where can youfind a Nikon in a tobacconist, news-agent, confectioner or chemist?

It follows that the majors, onceequipped with a better retail structure,will have no need for wholesalers, anessential move if they're to keep a gripon the market. In the long run theywould make more profit without them.

Then we should ensure that theindependents who give a first classservice are given the same margin as thelargest account, in this way they canattract more customers and throughknowledge and expertise sell a widerrange of stock.

The dealer will then invest a highproportion of his profit in stock socausing an upward spiral. The alterna-tive - wholly eliminating discounts - issurely Utopian.

In the long-term we envisage a train-ing scheme, not of the derisory two-daykind, but one perhaps similar to the oneyear post graduate teaching diploma.

To,quote Roger Greenaway again: "Ifeel we must get people to band togetherto combat,our common problems." ROLLING STONES/J. Geils Band/Black UhuruLondon, Wembley StadiumROCK'N'ROLL LEGENDS generallydisappoint because weeks of anticipa-tion for a particular event invariablyleads to a sense of anticlimax by theend of the gig. After all, it's only fleshand blood, guitars and sound systems,a four-four beat, and songs that usuallysound better on record anyway. Isn'tit?

Well no, not exactly. Some acts'have the ability to transcend all thatand turn even the largest hype into acelebration.

As usual the bill was carefully work-ed out, starting with Black Uhuru (theStones have usually showcased ablack act at big gigs) who lopedthrough a strong set of Sly and Robbie -driven rhythms. Then came J. Geils,fresh from number one American sta-tus and with plenty of experienceplaying the ball -parks in the USA.Impeccable sound and stage -craftwrung cheers from the 72,000 -strongcrowd which was just recovering fromits second drenching of the day andeager for something that rocked.

It was 6.45pm when the Stones tookthe stage to a giant roar. Performingagainst a backdrop taken from thepop -art cover of Still Life that stretchedthe width of the end terraces, theycracked into 'Under My Thumb' withlittle ceremony, warmed up with 'Shat-tered' and hit a groove on 'Just MyImagination' before cruising through aselection of rock covers like 'TwentyFlight Rock' and `Chantilly Lace' onwhich Charlie Watts was laying down atremendous backbeat barrage. Theinevitable 'Time Is On My Side' -whichcertainly seems to be true in theStones case - was greeted with rap-ture, and then the fun started withJagger and Wood running out onto theramps that stretched above the crowdto throw buckets of water about - allthe while cranking through 'Beast OfBurden' via the radio pickups the bandwas using throughout.

It was really a full two hours of hits,let It Bleed', a rolling 'You Can'tAlways Get What You Want' with thecavorting Jagger leading the commun-ity singing, a treatment of 'TumblingDice' that picked up speed into 'HangFire', slower again for the dance beatof 'Miss You' and then just as the lightbegan to fade, 'Honky Tonk Women',`Brown Sugar' and 'Start Me Up',which got the biggest cheer of the day,proving that the new material is just aspopular as the 15 -year -old stuff. `Jum-pin' Jack Flash' climaxed the setproper, by which time the tarpaulin -covered Wembley turf was a mass ofdancers and upraised clapping arms.

The encore was 'Satisfaction' withJagger swinging out over the audienceon a crane gantry while Keith Richardand Bill Wyman, who had been rocksolid throughout, showed why they areknown as the greatest rock'n'roll bandin the world.

Jagger: ability to transcend hype.

trappings and into a modern musicalworld of fantasy acting and patentedcosmetic lines that has given her adevoted adolescent following thatguarantees top 10 success and sell-out tours. On the second of twoHammersmith Odeon concerts, Toyahgave her best effort; a colourful mixtureof warbling vocals, mystical prancingand dancing against a backdrop out of`Alien' - a space-age cardboard citythrough which Toyah enacted herpantomime pieces. A night for the fans,whose average age seemed to bearound 14: loyal and demonstrative.

The hit singles were dutifully show-cased. 'I Want To Be Free' and`Thunder In The Mountains', bothchanted, melodramatic songs, give thegame away with their weary star -posing and superficialBut a forceful victory nevertheless.

Opening the bill were Positive Noisewho are indeed fortunate to land sucha good support position to coincidewith their second album Change OfHeart. The band is now producing a farmore funk -dance orientated style ofmusic than before whilst aiming at awider audience. The result is an effi-cient, controlled sound with a series ofcatchy, melodic uptempo numbers.

DEFUNKTLondon, VenueIS IT Dance Music or is it jazz?Defunkt's brand of rhythm music is theclosest thing to true jazz -funk seen forsome time - possibly the best ever ifone discounts Miles Davis's experi-ments to which it would take a Nijinskyto work out the time steps.

The band's leader and maniac trom-bone player is Joseph Bowie who hasput together a synthesis of most ofwhat is good around the musicalspectrum at the moment - the percus-sive feel of Talking Heads is therealong with the fertile jazz sense of anOrnette Coleman and true funk of theBootsy Collins variety. There is alsoshowmanship, for Bowie moves anddresses immaculately when he givesthe trombone a rest. His main sparringpartner is an equally skilled trumpetplayer called John Mulkerin while twowhite guitarists swap scratchy rhythmand blaring solo work between them.

It's, music that has to be witnessedlive to get the full flavour, but one hasthe feeling that Hannibal Records is onto something hot if it'can just put in theright kind of push.

Celebrating a firstyear of SurvivalA YEAR of surivival is something tocelebrate in the music business andSurvival Records of Ealing are doingjust that this week. It is exactly 12months since 'Subliminal' (SUR 001) byDrinking Electricity was released, fol-lowed by five other singles, one 12 -inchand one album, Overload.

A team of only three is responsible forthe label - David Rome and Anne -MarieHeighway, who also make up DrinkingElectricity, and Paul Edgley, responsi-ble for artwork and photography.However their combined skills andtalents make Survival quite self-suffi-cient. Anne -Marie, in addition to hervocal contributions, is a trained accoun-tant and handles all the business con-cerns of the label, while Rome (synth-esiser) is a lawyer and looks after anycontracts, press and A & R.

The two met while working in thesame office and Rome, who had recentlybought himself a Moog synthesiser - "Iknew almost nothing about them exceptthat Moog was supposed to be good" -found Anne -Marie to be a more in-terested and committed singer thananyone else he had considered.

Having recorded a two -track demo of`Shaking All Over', the pair (by nowgoing under the deliberately obscurename of Drinking Electricity) signed toBob Last's Pop Aural label. Unfortu-nately the distance between Edinburghand Ealing eventually produced inrre-concilable differences and the founda-tion of Survival Records was the result.

Based in Rome's home in WestLondon, all the necessary facilities are`in-house', including an art departmentwith photgraphic studio and darkroom,vital for the creative sleeves and packag-ing Survival provide. They have just

completed the building of a four -trackstudio and hope to install an eight -tracktape machine very soon.

The 'A & R' department has alsoundergone some expansion recently."We put an ad in Melody Maker for anew vocalist for a band we had at thetime. We later dropped them, but twobands answered instead and we signedthem," says Rome. One of these wasFaith Global, featuring the originalUltravox guitarist Stevie Shears. Theband have recorded three tracks, 'CodedWorld'/' Love Seems Lost'/`Earth Re-port' for their debut 12 -inch single,which is out on July 16.

Another recent signing is AmericanRichard Bone, who was recommendedto Survival by a US fanzine. His latestrelease was a 12 -inch, 'The Beat IsElite'. The label hopes to put out hisdebut album, along with a 40 -minutevideo in the near future.

This Summer has seen Survival enter-ing the international market with en-couraging results. A particularly posi-tive response is coming from Canadaand the United States. Says Rome: "Weare selling a lot on export. It's difficult toknow exactly how it breaks down, butAmerica is just getting into our clubscene - about four years behind. Britishdance music is very popular." There isalso apparently strong interest fromradio stations as far away as Tasmaniaand as near as France. Rome explainsthat 12 -inch singles go down especiallywell in Europe. "Unlike America,there's little difference in export dutieson seven and 12 -inch, he says. "Theylook better and sound better, I thinkwe'll be concentrating much more onthem in the future."

How the industry views theinexorable trend to digital

Herbert von Karajan with his finger on the future - the compact disc and itsplaying equipment at the launch in Hamburg last June.

TO THE trade and public generally theword 'Digital' means little more than aslogan on the covers of virtually all newclassical product.

Increasingly over the past year popmusic has been getting the digitaltreatment but it has hardly caused raisedeyebrows. How many sales would PaulMcCartney's Tug Of War album havelost had it been mastered on an analogmachine and not a digital one?

It will not be long however beforerecords are recorded, mastered andplayed back using digital processes, andthose with an interest in this develop-ment claim a revolution equal to thatfrom mono to stereo or 78 to 33/45 rpm.

Co -existence between digital and theanalog recording is ensured by twomajor factors. Firstly, having spentmany millions on developing the com-

forms patterns of numbers which arethen 'read' by a laser 'eye' in theplayback machine. Because the processis visual there is no contact, no frictionand therefore no wear. Digital is forever.

To gain the full effects of digital thepiece of music must be recorded ondigital machinery, mastered on digitaland duplicated onto the compact disc.

MUCH HAS already been written aboutthe compact disc and it is claimed thatthis small cousin of both the record andvideodisc will one day be the musiccarrier.

It is a disc 12 cm (43/4 inches) indiameter, with a visual rainbow effectfinish, which plays from inside to out.The information is moulded into theinside of the clear plastic disc - thus

pact disc system Philips/Sony is insist-ing on a royalty. This is somethingwhich the other recording giants EMIand CBS appear totally opposed to.

Secondly, there is the thorny questionof the single. Digital discs will be moreexpensive than analog ones and the costof a single would be prohibitive. With-out this marketing tool how will com-panies launch new acts?

But first, what is this digital process?Digital recording owes more to the videoage than it does to sound techniques.Sound, in recording terms, is storedinformation which, when in contactwith a tape head or stylus, provides asignal which is translated into a particu-lar series of notes.

In the digital process the informationis stored as pictures -a computer brain

protecting the disc from damage.It can be scratched, within reason,

and generally maltreated but becausethere is no information on the surface itcannot be harmed like an analog record.

Compact discs are due to be launchedupon the British public either inNovember of this year or Spring of next.The combined might of Sony andPhilips will be involved in a massivecampaign to impress the public with thisnew toy.

Only last week Sony introduced thePCM-3324 24 -track digital audio recor-der to the annual Association of Profes-sional Recording Studios exhibition inLondon.

Sony claims all kinds of technicaladvances with digital recording: theability to pre -mix during recording,track bouncing with no loss of quality,

irradication of crosstalk and, primarily,a virtual absence of background noise.

This sort of pure, 'perfect' soundimpressed some of the studio visitorsand frightened others. One engineertold RB that it would require completeretraining of his ear to the commercialprospects of the digital sound.

EMI's Abbey Road Studios have beenusing digital recording techniques theselast three years for classical recordings,and had the world's first digital desk.These recording machines have just twochannels which means recording thestereo sound direct.

EMI EMBRACED digital recordingsbecause digital produces masters whichlose no quality when used over and overagain. This is vital for an internationalcompany such as EMI which is involvedin distributing masters all over theworld.

Studio manager Ken Townsend isconvinced that digital is the method ofthe future but personally feels that thereis room for much improvement andstandardisation of equipment.

He is impressed by the standards ofCD samples he has heard so far andagrees that the sound is the nearest thingyet to giving the home listener a studioquality sound.

Peter Gallen, manager of the Round-house recording studio has the firstcomplete digital system installed in theUK - a 32 -track mixing desk withmastering and editing facilities. Toyahand Haircut 100 are just two of therecent clients and the system is nowattracting a large percentage of thestudio's bookings.

"I see digital eventually taking over.It is not a red herring like quadrophonic,

there really is a significant advantage insound terms. In the studio it is the majordevelopment since multi -track record-ing," he said.

Also on the Sony stand at the APRSexhibition was a prototype compact discplayer - the size of a good qualitycassette player. When launched thesemachines should cost around £400 andwill be compatible with existing ampli-fier and speaker systems.

Whether it will have a more devastat-ing effect on the market than quadro-phonic sound or direct cut discs remainsto be seen.

Aimed initially at the hi-fi buff whowants the best quality sound from hissystem and the gadgets collector whohas everything electronic, the CD sys-tem is intended to grow rapidly.

With any new system of home enter-tainment the software (in this case discs)available will be a major factor ininfluencing the potential buyer.

PolyGram, which is part -owned bythe CD developers Philips, will have 200titles available on launch, perhaps sur-prisingly the majority of which will bepop/light music. Such artists as JamesLast, Genesis, Dire Straits and Abba(not UK) will be included.

During 1983 PolyGram will add tothat number with 30 new releases permonth and it will be joined by the UKmanufacturer Nimbus, of Monmouth,which will custom press for any com-pany asking it.

PolyGram's pressings will be made inHanover where it will have a capacity forthree million discs by the end of 1983.Nimbus will be able to provide a furthermillion by that time and other Europeancapacity will be provided by Sonopressand Ariola.

Old fans are going to likethis one with its lush Geoff Emerickproduction and 15 new songs thatdwell on what Elvis knows best - his

stressful relationship with the oppositesex expressed in familiar sharp-ton-gued and incisive terms. The talents ofthe Attractions are strongly featuredand Costello's singing, especially onthe romantic numbers is probably hisbest ever. With 'You Little Fool' provid-ing a timely trailer for the LP andmaking steady chart progress, Impe-rial Bedroom should climb quickly andstay there.

ROBERT PLANT: Pictures AtEleven (Swansong SSK 59418)Prod: Robert PlantGreat to see Plant back on the record-ing scene and interesting to find thegeneral sound of the album so close tothe more thoughtful moments of Zep-pelin. Using Robbie Blunt on guitar,Paul Martinez on bass, Jezz Woodrof-fe on keyboards and either Phil Collinsor Cozy Powell on drums, Plant hasassembled a band that can handleplunging rockers like 'Pledge Pin' orslower stuff like 'Moonlight In Samosa'with equal grace while Plant himselfseems less frantic and is using hisvoice to greater effect than with Zep.One might have expected more ofPlant's beloved R&B styles, but he hascome up with an extremely marketablepackage.

Linked re-verently by Gerald Priestland, it takesin the provincial as well as the Londonoccasions and features his impressivehomilies and the inspirational musicwhich accompanied them. Of suchwide-ranging appeal, it may well enjoysome chart action.

BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST: AConcert For The People (PolydorPOLD 5052) Prod: BJH/Martin Lawr-ence/lan SoutheringtonThe musical record of a memorablefree concert played two years agobefore an ecstatic audience of 175,000Berliners in front of the historic Reich-stag building, will be given its biggestUK promotional push via a one -hourBBC -1 telecast in late July. All of whichmay belatedly enhance the status of afine British band, better appreciated inEurope where their elegant, carefullystructured music is massively popular.This album is a rewarding showcasefor their considerable talents as writersand musicians, spanning a range ofthoughtfully constructed songs. Not-able tracks are the haunting 'Mocking-bird' and the muscular 'Sip Of Wine'with outstanding guitar playing fromJohn Lees.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD: Check UsOut (EMI EMC 3410) Prod: NigelMartinezOnce the leaders of Brit -funk Light OfThe World have slipped recently, sincethe split into LoW, Beggar & Co andIncognito but this album should seethem fighting along with the likes ofImagination and Junior, for chart plac-ings, in the US as well as at home. Thenew single 'No 1 Girl' should pick updisco and airplay and with black musicstrong at present there could well be alot of interest in this album. Gee Bello,Nat Augustin and Tubbs Williamscreate a sound which is certainlyAmerican influenced but clearly Britishin its use of funk. Much of the creditmust go to Nigel Martinez, whoseproduction is masterful.

Best of the restSKIDS: Fanfare (Virgin VM 2)In just two years 1979 and 1980 TheSkids graced the chart with a series ofexcellent high energy singles. Suchnumbers as 'Into The Valley', 'WorkingFor The Yankee Dollar,"Mas-querade', 'Charade' and 'CircusGames' made The Skids one of Vir-gin's most successful acts. All theseand more are collected on this mid -price album which plays on a newphenonema 'new wave nostalgia'.Richard Jobson is still around and hissolo work is to be eagerly awaited if hecan reproduce the sort of commercialform which he gave The Skids.

MAGAZINE: After The Fact (VirginVM 1)When Howard Devoto left The Buzz -cocks on the verge of stardom manythought he was making a mistake. Anysuch thoughts were dispelled by thefirst recording by Magazine 'Shot ByBoth Sides', which will be rememberedas one of the highlights of new wave.The group came to an end last yearleaving three excellent albums, RealLife, Second Hand Daylight, and TheCorrect Use Of Soap and individuallyDevoto, Barry Adamson (bass) andDave Formula (keyboards) have beenlittle heard from. Guitarist JohnMcGeoch has gone on to greater

success with The Banshees. A mid -price album After The Fact could wellfind a good audience among today'snew wave fans.

CROSBY STILLS & NASH: DaylightAgain (Atlantic K50896) Prod:Crosby/Stills/NashNo group better typifies the Woodstockage than CS&N and while their formercollaborator Neil Young has gone on todevelop both his sweet and savagesides the remaining trio are firmlyrooted in harmonious AOR. This typeof music has an audience and it wouldbe wrong to ignore anything which thetrio does simply because it is notfashionable. Graham Nash's 'WastedOn The Way' is the single but it doesnot look strong enough to bring thisalbum to mass attention.

THE WALKER BROTHERS: Hits(Philips 6493 139) Prod: John Franz/Nick Venet/SCOTT WALKER: TheBest Of (6381 073) Prod: John FranzJulian Cope of the Teardrop Explodeshas done his best to bring his idol ScottWalker back into the popular eye,although perhaps subtitling an album'The Godlike Genius Of Scott Walker'was going over the top. The WalkerBrothers had some magnificent big -production hits with songs like 'Make ItEasy On Yourself' and 'The Sun Ain'tGonna Shine Anymore' and the mate-rial which they chose was always firstclass. Such tracks as 'Dancing In TheStreet', 'Stay With Me Baby' and'Stand By Me' are included on thiscollection. Most of the appeal of thegroup, aside from the arrangements,was the sensitive power of vocalistScott Walker. His own collection in-cludes such numbers as 'Joanna','Lights Of Cincinatti', 'Jackie' and 'ifYou Go Away', from the cream of UKand US songwriters, not forgetting thecontribution of Jacques Brel.

JIMMY SMITH: The Cat (Verve 2304153) Prod: Creed TaylorBefore Smith, the electric organ wasregarded only as suitable to be playedin cinema intervals. But he was theman more than anybody who liberatedthe instrument and set the jazz worldalight with his dazzling virtuosity. Re-corded in 1964, and a welcome reintro-duction to the catalogue, the albumcaptures Smith at the peak of hispowers as a natural born swinger,playing a selection of elegant stan-dards and some film music assisted bysome explosively brassy arrange-ments by Lalo Schffrin.

GEORGE BENSON: The Early Years(Polydor 2409 219) Prod: CreedTaylorAlthough a decade old, this albumshowcases Benson at a career cros-sroads when he was venturing awayfrom jazz into the pop area. He hadn'tstarted singing at this point, but afascinating flamenco -styled treatmentof Grace Slick's 'White Rabbit' and theattractive 'California Dreamin" indi-cates tis crossover intentions. Hisguitar technique was in full flower andin the absence of any new material forrather too long, consumers may wellfind much to enjoy in this mid -pricerelease.

BOB 'THE CAT' BEVAN: One Flewover The Bar, Six Flew Into The Net(Red Blus BUSLP 1002) Prod:Maurice Gran/Laurence MarksJust in time for World Cup fever, RedBus release an album of footballinghumour delivered by soccer's favouriteafter -dinner speaker. 'The Cat' is agoalkeeper of sorts, playing everyweek for Old Wilsonians sixth eleven,and while he has a nice line in selfdeprecation, he is also funny aboutmany of the leading names in thegame without ever getting too vicious(except where Arsenal's attackingpolicy is concerned, or Leeds' successrecord, or the wisdom of the FootballAssociation for that matter). Goodclean fun. According to Mickey Droyit's almost as funny as an F.A. Tri-bunal.

BITCHES SIN: Predator (Heavy Met-al HMR LP 4) Prod: uncreditedStrong initial release under the livelyMidlands Heavy Metal Records dealwith PolyGram to be distributedthrough IMS which should score withmetal fans everywhere. Antony Tom-kinson has a powerful set of vocalcords, and the duelling axes of Ian andPeter Toomey make a frighteninglyabrasive combination on stuff like'Lady Lies' and 'Dirty Women.'

JAMES BROWN: Live And Low-down At The Apollo, Vol. 1. (PolydorMid -Price 2482 530)When it was first released in the early60s this album was an essential itemfor every self-respecting mod. Titlessuch as 'Try Me', 'Think' and 'PleasePlease Please' began creeping intothe repertoire of the burgeoning whitesoul groups. It captures the excitementof Brown's show at the famous HarlemApollo with all its razzmatazz in the erabefore the singer moved onto thoseendlessly repetitive disco get -downitems.

MARSHALL CRENSHAW: MarshallCrenshaw (Warner Bros K57010)Prod: Richard Gottehrer/MarshallCrenshawWEA will shortly be putting in the bigpush on Crenshaw. At last it might justhave found an American act that isyoung and sassy enough to find its wayinto English hearts. Crenshaw - pro-duced by Blondie's former deskmanRichard Gottehrer - has something ofthe early Tom Petty, or more closelyDwight Twilley in his style and song -writing, but he has a fresh approach tohis rock - as on 'Cynical Girl' or`Rockin' Around in NYC' - whichshould click here.

GAP BAND: IV (Total Experience/MERS 6) Prod: Lonnie SimmonsTop quality funk from the band whichgave you 'Oops (Upside Your Head)'and 'Burn Rubber On Me'. The newsingle 'Early In The Morning' is theband's sixth hit single in the UK and theGap Band is one of the most consistentblack hit makers on the market. On thefourth album the band is tighter andfunkier than ever, though they knowenough to alter the mood and thetempo to give a more balanced pack-age.
