S.J.B. ANNOUNCEMENTS

April 17, 2016

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: The imagery of the Lamb continues, linked today to us, the flock. Jesus, the Lamb is also the shepherd, the Good Shepherd, who has proven His love by laying down his life for His sheep. Today’s readings explore the implications of that shepherd – sheep relationship. Like the other disciples, Paul and Barnabas are spending their days preaching the message of Jesus. Beginning with chapter thirteen, the Book of Acts traces Paul’s missionary journeys. In today’s first reading (Acts 13:43-52) we find a typical episode. Many Jews are persuaded by Paul’s words, and the other Jews grow angry with him. For his part, Paul, never one to mince words, declares those Jews unworthy of God’s word and pledges to turn his attention to the Gentiles. In the wake of the ensuing persecution, Paul and Barnabas prudently decide to move on. Note, though, that even in such trying circumstances, they “knew only how to be filled with joy.” Today’s gospel (Jn. 10:27-30) gives us a moving picture of Jesus, the shepherd, and us, the flock he tends. There is more cause for confident hope here; we shall never be snatched from Jesus’ hand. He knows us and gives us eternal life; we hear His voice and follow Him, knowing that as long as we are a faithful flock, we shall never perish. The second reading from Revelation (Rv. 7:9-17), moreover, continues to insist that true followers of the Lamb will know vindication. They will not be spared sorrows, heartaches or suffering, but they will survive these periods of trial through fidelity. Then, having “washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb,” they shall be united with God who “will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

SPECIAL SAINT’S DAY THIS WEEK – EASTER WEEK FOUR

Thursday, April 21st – St. Anselm of Canterbury

Like St. Augustine in the 5th century, St. Anselm was a philosopher and theologian, a teacher and bishop in the 12th century Church. Though born in northern Italy (Piedmont), Anselm entered a Benedictine abbey in Normandy, France and was

appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, England in 1093. He insisted that theology was “faith seeking understanding.” He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1720.

Saturday, April 23rd – St. George

Sometimes, with saints who lived long ago, it is hard to separate fact from pious legend. That is certainly the case with St. George who lived in the 4th century and was martyred in Palestine. In the popular mind, he will always be identified with the myth that grew

up about him in the 12th century – the myth that transformed him into a medieval crusader and a slayer of dragons. St. George is the patron saint of England, Barcelona and Constantinople.

Good Shepherd Sunday: As part of the Archdiocese’s celebration of this Sunday as a “Day of Prayer for Vocations,” a first year seminarian at St. Joseph’s Seminary will speak at all our Sunday Morning Masses this weekend. His name is John Figueroa and we welcome him to St. John’s.

Most Holy Trinity Update: We have been advised by the Archdiocese that on this Thursday, April 21st, there will be a legal “closing” and the church and rectory facilities of the previous Most Holy Trinity parish will be legally transferred to the Catholic Eastern rite Syro-Malankara community. We wish this new community well and we hope that they will bring new life to that area of Yonkers. We rejoice that such a beautiful church will

once again be a place where Mass and the sacraments are celebrated. St. John’s will continue to be responsible for the former convent (then friary) at Most Holy Trinity until it can be transferred to another religious group. Cardinal’s Appeal Update: The last report we received from the Archdiocese indicated that we have received pledges that will bring us very close to nearly 90% of our parish goal! This is a tribute to your generosity! Please be sure to fulfill those pledges! We also ask those who have not yet made a gift or a pledge to this absolutely vital campaign to do so as soon as possible. There are so many in the Archdiocese who benefit from the generosity you show every year. And of course, we know that this is not really a matter of meeting goals – it is a matter of doing our part to assist in a vital work of practical charity. May God bless you for your goodness to those in need!

Sunday Report: Last weekend 1,395 parishioners attended Mass; our collection totaled $9,252.00; average contribution: $6.63. Thank you for your

continued financial support of St. John’s and its many needs. Your generosity is essential and greatly appreciated. Rest in Peace: Let us pray for Elizabeta Villani who was buried from our church this past week. Our prayers go out to her family and friends.

Golden Anniversary: Any couples who are celebrating 50 years of marriage this year (2016) are asked to contact the rectory. They will be invited to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for a special

Mass. This year there will be two Masses for Golden Anniversary couples: Saturday, June 25th (at 1:30 p.m.) and Sunday, June 26th (at 2:00 p.m.) Pre-registration is absolutely necessary for Mass at the Cathedral so any couple that is celebrating 50 years of marriage should call the rectory by Friday, June 15th, at the latest. Local Theatre: (1) Archbishop Stepinac High School Drama Club is presenting the tri-state regional premiere of the Broadway hit, “Sister Act.” Show dates are: April 29th, 30th, May 6th, 7th at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee on May 8th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $22.00 for adults and $18.00 for children under 12 and senior citizens. Major Bowes Award night will honor all Good Counsel Academy Alumnae at the April 30th performance. All religious sisters are invited to “Nun Night” on May 6th and can pre-order one complimentary ticket! For all ticket reservations please call 914-946-4800 ext. 200. For further information email [email protected]. (2) Sacred Heart H.S. Drama Club presents the Tony Award winning musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” on Friday and Saturday (April 22nd and 23rd) at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday (April 24th) at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 (Students and Seniors: $8.00). For information call 965-6953.

Honor Thy Mother: This year Mother’s day falls on Sunday, May 8th. This is a day to honor all Mothers – living and dead. This is a day to express our thanks for all they have done for us. It is a day to tell them how much we love them and to ask for their prayers even as

we assure them of ours. For those mothers who have gone before us into the fullness of life with God, we give thanks to God for them as we recall their memories this day. On Mother’s Day we begin a Triduum of Masses for those mothers whose names are enrolled with us. Special Mother’s Day cards and envelopes are available this week at the exits of the Church or in the rectory office. Let us pray that Mary, the Mother of us all, will bless all mothers, especially expectant mothers.

Special Children’s Mass: Next Sunday at our 9:30 a.m. Mass, we once again welcome younger boys and girls to a special Mass where they will be

excused after the Opening Prayer and go to the Church Hall for a special Liturgy of the Word. After this Mass please join us for a Family Coffee and Craft Hour in the school cafeteria at which we will have refreshments and make crafts for the family. We are very grateful to the parent-leaders (as well as some older children) who are assisting with this program.

Easter Tradition: The Easter Bunny: There is no mention in the Bible of the long-eared, short-tailed creature (a “rabbit” or a “hare”) which has become for many an important symbol of Easter. Rabbits, of course, are noted for their fertility and are

therefore often used as symbols of new life – which is, in a religious context, a critically important aspect of the Christian understanding of the Lord’s Resurrection. Some believe the tradition of the Easter bunny can be traced to German immigrants to the United Sates in the 19th century who brought a custom in which rabbits protected Easter eggs from other animals, so the eggs could be shared at family meals on Easter Sunday. Children were encouraged to leave carrots for the rabbits in case they became hungry from all their hopping.

Bingo: Adult bingo is back! The Rosary Altar Society will be hosting “Bingo Night” on Friday, May 6th in the lower Church. Doors

open at 7:00 p.m. Bingo starts at 8:00 p.m. Admission is $20.00 per person (18 yrs. and older) and includes 9 games with a jackpot. Early Bird Special ($2.00 per game plus a 50/50) begins at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be sold. For more information contact Robyne Liberatore at 914-325-6373. Senior News: On Wednesday, April 20th all Senior Club Members are invited to a Pasta and Meatball luncheon with mini pastries and espresso coffee. Also in April, a trip is planned to the Westchester Broadway theatre for “Man of LaMancha”. Come, join us. Contact Deacon Marty Olivieri at 914-423-4859 for information.

Men’s Weekend Retreat: All men (14 years of age or older) of our parish

are invited to join us at the Bishop Molloy Passionist Retreat House on Friday, April 22nd through Sunday, April 24th 12 noon. The suggested fee is $210 for the weekend which includes private room and board, presentations, group talks, etc. For information call the Retreat House at 718-739-1229 or Sal Razza at 914-969-1923. Second Collection: Next weekend we will take up our monthly special collection to support our school and maintain our school facilities. The school is not only used for our grammar school children, our CCD classes and our RCIA program, but for a variety of community and parish activities. It is vital that we keep our school facilities in excellent condition. We ask for a contribution of $7.00 in this monthly collection and once again express our appreciation for your generosity.

Holy Name Society: The Holy Name Society will have their monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the La Grotta Restaurant on McLean Avenue. For more information, please call Vinny Vanadia on 423-9149. All are welcome.

Benefit Concert: On Friday, April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Our Lady of Pompeii Church (95 Palisade St., Dobbs Ferry) is holding a Benefit concert by Peter Valentine and his band. The proceeds will go to the church. Peter Valentine was a member of our choir several years ago; he and his band have performed all over the Unites States. The donation is $15.00. For information call 693-0119 or 231-6257.
