Easter Mass Schedule: Please note that there is a special schedule for Easter because there is NO 5:00 p.m. Mass on

Holy Saturday. The only Mass allowed on Holy Saturday is the Easter Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 15th. Our Masses on Easter Sunday will be at 8:00 a.m.; 9:30 a.m. (children’s Mass); 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Our traditional Easter egg hunt will take place after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the lower Church (or, if the weather is nice, outside on the lawn). Please note: despite the time between Masses that our schedule affords, Easter has historically caused parking problems – especially since parents with children will be staying longer after the 9:30 a.m. Mass. If the weather is nice and you don’t live too far away, you might consider walking to Church on Easter Sunday!

S.J.B. ANNOUNCEMENTS

April 9, 2017

PALM SUNDAY: Today as we begin our Mass we walk with Jesus as He enters Jerusalem whose streets are lined with cheering people welcoming Him as the Messiah. Later on, as the Passion is read we pray with Jesus during His Agony in the Garden. We then watch as Judas betrays Him with a kiss – and are reminded of our own betrayals. We listen as Peter denies the Lord three times – and realize we cannot count the number of times we have denied Him. Finally we hear the words of forgiveness He speaks from the cross only moments before His agony comes to an end and He gives Himself up to death so that we might be saved.

EASTER TRIDUUM The Triduum of Christ’s passion and resurrection is a solemn celebration that continues for three days – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil/Easter Sunday. The Triduum begins with the Mass of Our Lord’s Supper and closes with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. Each day tells a different part of the story of Jesus and our salvation. There are rituals that take place which happen at no other time: the washing of the feet, the veneration of the cross, the service of light, the singing of the Exultet, the baptism and reception of candidates into full membership in the Catholic Church. The Easter Triduum is the culmination of the entire liturgical year.

HOLY THURSDAY Lent ends at dusk on Holy Thursday and the Triduum begins with the Mass of Our Lord’s Supper, which is always in the evening. It commemorates the day Jesus instituted the Most Holy Eucharist and the priesthood and washed the feet of His disciples. Our service at St. John’s begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

GOOD FRIDAY

This solemn day honors the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The story of Christ’s passion is told. There is the ancient tradition of the veneration of the cross and Holy Communion. Prayers are offered for the entire world. It is a day of fast and abstinence. Our service at St. John’s begins at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

EASTER VIGIL/HOLY SATURDAY

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is proclaimed and celebrated. A fire is created from which the Easter Candle is lit signifying that Christ is the light of the world. The reading of Holy Scripture tells of the long history of salvation beginning with Creation. New members are received into the Church. The Church rejoices in her risen Lord. Our service of the Easter Vigil at St. John’s begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Lenten Fast and Abstinence: ALL THE FRIDAYS OF LENT ARE DAY OF ABSTINENCE -All Catholics above the age of 14 are obliged to abstain from meat on the days of abstinence (unless poor health excuses). Additionally, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both fast and abstinence. Not only is meat prohibited, but on these two fast days, only one full meal is permitted. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength, but

these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from 18 to 59 (unless poor health excuses). Latin Chant: During Lent at our sung Sunday Masses, we will use traditional Gregorian Chant whenever the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei are sung. The chant melodies are very easy to sing and the words of these responses are so familiar in English that the Latin shouldn’t pose a problem, even for someone who has never studied Latin. Moreover, it gives us an opportunity (however small) to recapture the long tradition of singing Gregorian Chant. The text of and music for these acclamations can be found in the Music Issue: Kyrie (#839); Sanctus (#841); Agnus Dei (#845).

Good Friday “Stations: This Friday, April 14th – Good Friday – we will have (in addition to the Solemn Service of the Passion with Communion at 3:00 p.m.) a service of Stations of the Cross beginning at 7:30 p.m. There will be no Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at this service because that is not permitted on Good

Friday. However, this is the day – of all days in the Church’s liturgical year – to make the Stations of the Cross.

Sunday Report: Last weekend 1,295 parishioners attended Mass; our collection totaled $8,881.00; average contribution: $6.86. Thank you for your

continued financial support of St. John’s and its many needs. Your generosity is essential and greatly appreciated. What is “Tenebrae”?: “Tenebrae” (which is a Latin word meaning “darkness” or “shadows”) is a Holy Week devotion which dates back to the 7th or 8th century A.D. and is characterized by the successive extinguishing of Church lights and candles as the service progresses. No service in the Church is more biblical; every word of Tenebrae is taken from the Scriptures. It is composed of Psalms, Antiphons, Scripture readings and prayers. It is primarily a time of silence, reflection and meditation on the most sacred events of our redemption. We welcome everyone to our Tenebrae Services at 9:00 a.m. on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

The Pascal Fast: This is the period of fasting which the Church recommends during Good Friday

and on Holy Saturday until the conclusion of the Easter Vigil. The two day fast goes back to ancient Church tradition in which the Church fasted because her spouse had been taken away. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence, of course. Those who are able are encouraged to extend that fast through Saturday (and to try as much as possible to keep solid food to an absolute minimum) until the conclusion of the Easter Vigil Service on Holy Saturday.

Silver and Gold: St. John’s congratulates all our married parishioners who are celebrating their 25th, 50th (or even 60th!) anniversary this year (2017). We

invite all these jubilarians to join us for Mass (followed by a reception in their honor in the lower church) on Sunday, April 30th. They are invited to attend the 12:30 Mass where they will renew their vows and then join us for the reception that follows. If you are celebrating such an anniversary, please contact the rectory NO LATER THAN April 21st. [N.B.: Couples who are celebrating their Golden (50th) anniversary will be invited to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for a special ceremony on a future date that we will announce as soon as that date is determined.]

Palm Sunday Procession: This Sunday at our 9:30 a.m. Mass, we once again welcome younger boys and girls to a special Mass where they will be

excused after the Opening Prayer and go to the Church Hall for a special Liturgy of the Word. Before Mass begins, the children will be asked to go to the vestibule of the church where they will receive palm which they will carry in procession. After this Mass please join us for a Family Coffee and Craft Hour at which we will have refreshments and make crafts for the family. We are very grateful to the parent-leaders (as well as some older children) who are assisting with this program. Special Holy Week Confessions: In conjunction with the whole Archdiocese, St. John’s will have a “Reconciliation Monday” this Monday (April 10th). We will have confessions from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and again from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. This will be the last opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance before Easter.

Easter Collection: We ask for your special generosity to St. John’s on Easter. We depend on your special

sacrifice at times like Christmas and Easter to help us defray the cost of flowers that decorate our church at this time -- as well as some of the other expenses we incur during this special season. Special Easter envelopes are available at the exits of the Church for those who have not received them in the mail.

Palm Crosses: The Holy Name Society will be selling Palm Crosses this weekend. The suggested donation for each cross is $10.00. They will be available in the

vestibule of the church. S.J.B. Senior Leisure Club: The S.J.B.’s Leisure Club’s Flea Market Sale which had to be rescheduled because of inclement weather did have a successful event on the weekend of March 25th, 26th. Thanks to all who supported our cause and extend our sincere appreciation. The Flea Market and other fund raisers help the Senior Leisure Club support costs like bus transportation for events such as the theater for the production of “Mamma Mia” on April 20th and to the Hunterdon Playhouse to see “Born Yesterday” on May 18th. With funds like this and what the seniors pay themselves trips may be realized and enjoyed. Thank you!
