Setting out a kitchen floor First pick a focal point (this illustration shows the sink wall opposite the door). Dry lay a tile at each end and strike a datum line (see Activity 7).

Setting out a kitchen floor Create a 3, 4, 5 right-angled triangle for a width datum line (this illustration shows this as the centre of the doorway).

Setting out a kitchen floor Measure out from the first datum line to ensure you have good cuts everywhere you need to place a cut tile.

Setting out a kitchen floor Adjust your datum line (as in this illustration), as the cut tile to the door would be too small.

Setting out a kitchen floor Check widthways to ensure you have good cuts. This will leave a small cut to the unit by the door (a cut should not be smaller than one-fifth of a tile). 300mm x 300mm would be a cut no smaller than 60mm.

Setting out a kitchen floor Once any adjustments to the datum lines have been made, fix the first row of tiles. On this floor all the cuts are being left out to fix the following day.
