Thegraceful rooms are designed to soothe and relax,as are the botanical spa and heated infinity pooloverlooking the zoological gardens. Savor stunningviews and a glass of champagne against the city’sglittering backdrop.

VICTORIA FALLS HOTELZimbabwe

The Victoria Falls Hotel is spectacularly locatedbeside Victoria Falls, one of the great wonders ofthe world. Built in 1904 to house railway workers,“the grand old lady of the falls” combinesambiance and world-class service, with refurbished Edwardian-style rooms, tropical gardens and terraces overlooking Victoria FallsBridge, where guests can feel the spray from the falls below.

U N E S C ORobben Island and the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas in South Africa and Victoria Falls, which extends from Zimbabwe intoZambia, are UNESCO World Heritage sites featured in this comprehensiveprogram. These sites are distinguished due to universal scenic, historic, artistic or scientific value.

VICTORIA FALLSZimbabwe

Until the 19th century, the Zambezi River’s great cascade was called Mosi-oa-Tunya, or“the smoke that thunders,” by the region’sKololo tribe. “Discovered” on November 16,1855, by Dr. David Livingstone and renamed forEngland’s queen, Victoria Falls is the planet’slargest curtain of water — spanning more than a mile — as it crashes some 328 feet into the raging Batoka Gorge below. Twice the height ofNiagara Falls, mighty Victoria Falls casts a veilof spray that can be seen up to 50 miles away!

JOHANNESBURGSouth Africa

Local peoples first inhabitedthe region that we now knowas Johannesburg. European

settlers migrated to the area in themid-1800s to prospect for gold. In 1886, the dis-covery of a huge lode was discovered and sentgold panners and diggers into a frenzy. Within a few months of the discovery, the populationexploded. Today, Joburg is the country’s financial center. If tranquil Cape Town is thecountry’s oldest and most genteel city,Johannesburg is its rambunctious little brother. Its energy is palpable, and as in any large city, many people come here to enjoy the fast-pacedlifestyle. By contrast, the suburb of Westcliffand the peaceful environs of your hotel are distinguished by mansions with beautiful gardens.

CAPE TOWNSouth Africa

Sheltered at the foot of Table Mountain, SouthAfrica’s Mother City is one of the world’s mostbeautiful cities. Centuries-old Cape Dutch houses, storied landmarks and enchanting gardens dot the cityscape. Among the city’scountless highlights, the colorful Victoria &Alfred Waterfront welcomes visitors with inviting boutiques and cafés set amid workadayharbor life. To the south, the Atlantic seaboardgives way to a spectacular coastline, powderybeaches, seaside villages and an array of exoticwildlife within easy reach of the city.

ROBBEN ISLANDSouth Africa

Robben Island symbolizes the triumph of thehuman spirit. Within sight of Cape Town, buteffectively a world away, the island was the siteof the prison that held Nelson Mandela andother political dissidents. Today, former prisoners lead visitors on insightful tours.Despite inhumane conditions, prisonersorganized political debates, educational programs and sporting events. They alsobecame the international focus of the fightagainst apartheid.

CAPE PENINSULASouth Africa

In 1580, Sir Frances Drake, the great Englishnavigator, described the Cape of Good Hope as the “fairest cape … in the whole circumference of the earth.” The Cape, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet,is blessed with a dramatic beauty. TableMountain National Park, which stretchesfrom Cape Town to Cape Point, is part of theCape Floral Region, which is considered tohave the most diverse range of plant life in theworld. In addition, visitors are likely to seeplenty of wildlife, especially chacma baboons.More elusive are zebra, eland and bontebok. AtCape Point, ascend one of the world’s highestsea cliffs by funicular to admire stunningpanoramic coastal views. A stop in Simonstownis a must. Here, stroll along the boardwalk at Boulders Beach to see more than 2,000 protected African penguins, whose colonydates only from the early 1980s.

SOWETOSouth Africa

Soweto, an abbreviation for South WesternTownships, is no longer just a collection ofshantytowns built to house black mine workersaway from the center of Johannesburg. It is athriving community that is proud of its role inending the oppression of apartheid. Its VilakaziStreet even produced two Nobel Peace Prizelaureates: Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.Today, many residents own their homes andcommunities are being improved day by day.Even millionaires call Soweto home, and a glitzyshopping center and cinema are open to all.Squatter camps still exist, but these camps aredisappearing as more affordable housing isbuilt. With a brave spirit, the residents ofSoweto are embracing both the new opportuni-ties and challenges presented to them.

Nelson Mandela: From Prisoner to President Nelson Mandela was a successful lawyer whenhe joined the African National Congress in 1952.A decade later, the ANC was banned andMandela was sentenced to life in prison. Duringhis 27 years in prison, he never compromised hisbeliefs to gain freedom and became a potentanti-apartheid symbol. Freed in 1990, Mandelanegotiated the end of apartheid and shared the1993 Nobel Peace Prize with South AfricanPresident F.W. de Klerk. In 1994, Mandelabecame South Africa’s first black president.

outhern Africa fascinates with its historical, cultural and natural wonders. In South

Africa, Cosmopolitan Cape Town, poised betweenmountains and ocean, combines Cape Dutch housesand inspiring landmarks, including Robben Island.Bustling Johannesburg, born from a 19th-century goldrush camp, is home to the stirring Apartheid Museum. Two nights aboard the luxurious Rovos Rail takes youto breathtaking Victoria Falls, known by the indigenouspeople as Mosi-oa-tunya, “The Smoke that Thunders.”In Botswana, get an up-close look at the continent’swild and powerful animals during a three-night safariin Chobe National Park. Ignite your spirit of adventure.Come discover the extraordinary Treasures ofSouthern Africa!

In the not-so-distant past, a safari was synonymous with hunters stalking big gameacross the African plains. Today, most huntersare armed with cameras instead. Their trophies?Images of Africa’s magnificent wildlife.

In Chobe National Park, each day of yoursafari will unfold with incredible discoveries.Awaken to the call of an African fish eagle and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee as your expert tracker prepares for your morninggame drive. In an open-sided 4x4 vehicle, set off in pursuit of Botswana’s exotic animals andbirds. Chobe teems with wildlife, from herds of elephant and buffalo and to gregarious baboonsand grazing giraffe. Learn about each animalwhile observing them in their natural habitat.

Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast andshare your morning encounters with fellow trav-elers. After lunch, enjoy a dip in the pool or arelaxing massage at the spa. Before your after-noon game drive, gather for tea in the boma, aoutdoor enclosure overlooking the Chobe River.

With the sunset as your backdrop, return tothe lodge for a tranquil evening. Your dinnerof delicious international cuisine is served onthe riverside terrace, where hippos oftensplash in the water below. Later, gather inthe Victorian-style billiards room to tradetales and tally your wildlife sightings. Byday’s end, you will have the gorgeousphotographs and thrilling memories ofyour very own safari.
