The Pastor’s PenThe Pastor’s PenThe Pastor’s PenThe Pastor’s Pen Dear Parish Family,
I would like to introduce to you an exciting new resource that we are
happy to offer FREE OF CHARGE to our parishioners. Last weekend we sent out a general parish email introducing FORMED, an online source
filled with a variety of digital content available for use by individuals,
families, and small faith sharing groups. Go to www.formed.org and enter our parish access code: Y4VKKC. You can then sign up for free
access by creating a personal account with your own username/email
and password. (Don’t purchase an individual subscription. It’s not free
and doesn’t offer as much content.)
So often we can find ourselves questioned about the faith and feel that
we don’t have answers. This site will offer video series, audio series,
movies, and even e-books. The content is from the Augustine Institute and Ignatius Press, two leaders in producing Catholic catechetical mate-
rials that are understandable. The videos are professionally produced
and include such things as 33 Days to Morning Glory (a six-week retreat we will offer on Wednesdays starting July 6), Bishop Robert Barron’s Ca-
tholicism series, bible studies, reflections on the Sunday readings, as
well as programs for marriage and baptismal preparation. There are ma-terials for youth and adults and the movies are suitable for family view-
ing.
Next Saturday, Dan Waruszewski will be ordained a deacon for the Dio-cese of Pittsburgh. Dan has been studying at Theological College in
Washington and did a pastoral assignment with us this past year, teach-
ing in our religious education program. He will return to us in the fall as Deacon Dan. We extend our congratulations to him and offer our pray-
ers for him as he prepares to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
Likewise, please pray for Deacon Michael Rubeling who will be ordained
to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Baltimore on Saturday, June 25
at the Cathedral.
I’d like to extend a Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, grandfathers, god-
fathers, stepfathers, and father figures. We remember in prayer those who have gone before us. These men are charged with nothing less than
being an image of our Heavenly Father in our families and community.
As a priest, I am charged with being a spiritual father to anyone under my pastoral care. Let’s pray that we may be men of God who strive for
holiness. I would like to especially encourage the men of our parish to
look at our Men’s Ministry here at St. John’s, particularly That Man is
You which continues to meet on some Saturdays and will resume a regu-
lar schedule in the fall. Likewise, the St. Thomas Aquinas Men’s Study
Group meets on Saturday mornings. Both provide fraternity and an op-
portunity to grow in faith. I highly recommend them as a wise invest-
ment of time. Happy Father’s Day!
Your brother in the Lord,

not Roman Catholic, know that you are most
welcome. While we are unable to extend a gen-
eral invitation to receive Holy Communion,
please feel free to come forward at Communion
time, and cross your arms over your chest as the
minister will say a brief prayer.

toes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, a few squash,
and even trying out cabbage. Each summer we
encourage families and individuals to sign up for a week
(watering/weeding/harvesting as needed). This year, we will
provide direction through our garden managers, so you can
sign up even if gardening is new to you. Our website allowing
your family to sign up to tend the garden will be online in the
next week or so. Please visit www.stjohnsp.org/garden to sign up (and check back if it isn’t up and running).

Singing Our Faith Wondering about the sung Mass
Acclamations? As we have entered Ordinary Time,
we have switched to the Mass of Joy and Peace by
Tony Alonzo, found in the blue Gather hymnal, be-
ginning with the Gloria at #207. We are using the
Mystery of Faith Acclamation B (When we eat this
Bread…) In recent years, we have typically
changed the Mass setting with the seasons: Mass of
Joy and Peace for Advent, the Storrington Mass for the Christ-
mas and Easter seasons, chant for Lent (including the Latin
Sanctus and Agnus Dei). During Ordinary Time, in addition to
Joy and Peace, we have sung the Mass of Christ the Savior by
Dan Schutte: this is in the Breaking Bread book. We have also
learned parts of the Mass of Wisdom by Steven Janco, which
was printed on cards since it was not in either of our hymnals –
but it will be in One in Faith, the new hymnal (with readings)
we will begin using this fall in addition to Gather. All major
Archdiocesan celebrations have begun using this Mass setting,
and all parishes have been asked to familiarize our parishion-
ers with it, so we are off to a good start!
Reconciliation: Confessions are heard Saturdays 4-5 PM, Thursday evenings before First Fridays 7-7:30 PM, and First Fridays 9-9:30 AM (as well as Thurs-days, 7-7:30 PM and Fridays, 9-9:30 AM during Advent and Lent) as well as by appointment with a priest.
Baptisms: Parents who wish to have their children baptized should contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation, to begin the baptism prepara-tion process. Baptisms are celebrated at Mass and on Saturdays at noon. Please note that godparents must be at least 16 years old and confirmed, practicing Catholics. There must be at least one Catholic god-parent, but other baptized Christians may serve as Christian witnesses.
Marriage: Couples planning to marry must contact one of the priests or deacons at least 6 months prior to the tentative date of marriage. Participation in a marriage preparation program is required.
Ministry to the Sick: The Sacrament of Anointing should be administered at the beginning of a serious illness. Please notify the parish office when a parish-ioner is hospitalized. If you are unable to attend Mass and wish to receive Holy Communion, please contact the parish office.
Confirmation: Youth in 9th grade and above are eli-gible to prepare for the reception of the sacrament. Adults who have not been confirmed are invited to contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation, to make arrangements for the sacrament.

For information, contact Jen Mayer, Coordinator of Adult Faith For-mation.

Catechists 2016-17 In Matthew’s Gospel (Ch. 28) Je-
sus commissions His disciples to “Go make disciples
of all nations…” Jesus didn’t limit this calling to
adults. He says “to all”, including children. Your par-
ish community seeks adults who are willing and able
to carry out this commissioning. We are looking for
elementary and middle school catechists, co-
catechists, substitutes and assistants who are inter-
ested in serving God by forming the youngest members of our
parish family. Life Teen, Edge and Confirmation team members
are also needed. We need you. The children need you. The Lord
needs you. Consider sharing your faith. Pray. Search your heart.
Please contact John at 410-647-4892 or [email protected] if you would like to discuss working with grades PK4 thru 8. Contact
Stephen at [email protected] if interested in working with Edge, Confirmation or Life Teen.
Merciful God: you have shown your love for us throughout the ages and in countless ways. Give us the vision and courage we need to clear-ly recognize who Jesus is and what we must do to follow him.

Where are their families? That’s a ques-
tion I ask myself often. Nancy is 18 and
homeless. At 16 she became addicted to
heroin, but is now being treated. She did-
n’t even know what to ask for; she just
knew she needed help. Her family turned
their backs on her; St. Vincent de Paul
did not. We work with the gifts you pro-
vide to help children like Nancy. Jesus
works through you. He has provided his
bounty with the expectation that we
share it with those in need. A monetary
or food donation to St. Vincent de Paul
goes directly to the neediest of God’s
children right here in Severna Park and
surrounding communities.
Poor Box Jesus will multiply your gifts to
our poor in this life, but more importantly,
in the next. Please be as generous as you
can. There is so much you can do!
Pantry BOGOGO! Buy one, get one, give one. We especially need boxed stuffing,
cake mix & frosting, canned carrots,
canned peas, condiments, cooking oil,
jelly, ramen noodles, and toiletries. We
gratefully accept unexpired donations
anytime, in the blue bins in the lobby of the Church. We are also in need of
brown paper grocery bags to package
our food in for clients.
Clothing, in good condition, is accepted in the receptacle located in the church
parking lot. All clothes are distributed in
Baltimore.

7 ways to encourage family prayer
Why do Catholicscall God “Father”?
© Copyright 2016 Success Publishing & Media, LLC
Helping our children grow in their Catholic faith. June 2016
We call God “Father” for two reasons: rst, because he is our Creator and our origin, and second because he loves and cares for us as a father does for his children (Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 239).
Moreover, Jesus taught us to call God “Our Father:” “This is how
you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be
your name” (Matthew 6:9). Upon entering the Church through our
baptism, we become children of God, the Father.
“Parents who pray together teach by the way they live that God is real; that he is present, listening, and eager to be a part of our lives” (Archbishop Charles Chaput). Try these ideas to add more family prayer. Make the Sign of the Cross upon waking. Let this be the rst prayer you each say every day. Pray the Angelus at 6:00am, 12 noon, 6:00pm, when you are together. This happy prayer reminds us of Jesus’ birth. Invite him to join you. Light a candle at each family gathering to represent Christ, our family guest. Teach prayerful listening. Write down children’s prayer intentions on a calendar and monitor the results. How prayer is answered
teaches us about ways God communicates. Turn the car into a chapel.
Use the drive to the grocery store, to practices, or play dates for family prayer, to sing favorite hymns, listen to sacred music, or count blessings together.
Develop spontaneous prayer skills. We have such a rich treasure of Catholic prayer that we forget to pray spontaneously. Encourage children to pray unrehearsed
and detailed prayers aloud to build a lifelong habit.
Practice acceptance. It is important for children to learn early that while what we want may be compelling, what God wants for us counts most. Besides, God’s ideas are always better than ours.
St. Josemaría Escríva St. Josemaría Escríva de Balaguer was born in Barbastro, Spain in 1902. As a youngster, he saw a monk walk barefoot in the snow and was inspired to become a priest. Ordained in 1925, St. Josemaría had to minister secretly because of religious persecution during the Spanish Civil War. In 1928, he founded Opus Dei (Work of God), an organization based on the idea that people can obtain holiness by performing their everyday tasks with a Christian spirit.
When plans go wrong… Although St. Joseph was blessed as Jesus’ earthly father, life didn’t always go smoothly for him. In addition to the regular paternal duties, Joseph had to protect and raise God’s son amidst great danger and responsibility. When life doesn’t go as planned, St. Joseph can be our model for what to do: pray, listen, and trust.
“Entrust your works to the LORD, and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3).

Luke 9:51-62,What does it take to be a disciple?
June 3 – St. Charles Lwanga and his companions (1886). While serving under Ugandan King Mwanga II, St. Charles and his friends faced persecution for their faith. When Lwanga and 21 of his companions refused King Mwanga’s immoral demands, the king ordered them all to be executed, which they underwent in joyful anticipation. June 21– St. Aloysius Gonzaga (1591). St. Aloysius prayed vigorously and fasted from age 7. Upon joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordered to
cut back in order to study and spend time with the other students. He died while nursing the sick. June 24 – The Nativity of St. John the Baptist (1st century). Before St. John was born, his father, Zechariah received a message from the angel Gabriel foretelling his birth. For his doubt, Zechariah was struck speechless and only spoke again when John was born, saying, “’And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways’” (Luke 1:76).
The essence of a happy family is that members have a sense of meaning and purpose. They enjoy each other’s company and can work together to become the people God intended them to be. Here are ways to enjoy your happy family: · Swap stories. When the family is home, leave the screens off so you can reconnect. Tell about interesting moments of your day. Find out the story of your child’s day – even if a tidbit is all he will share. · Put family rst. Family time comes ahead
of work, play dates, sports practice, television, game time. Friends are important, but family comes rst. · Stay calm. Avoid losing control in front of the children. Keep a peaceful environment in the home and children will feel safe and learn self-control, too. · Develop family rituals. Rituals and traditions add to a child’s sense of family identity. Mass on Sunday mornings followed by a favorite breakfast, for example. Pizza and game night on Fridays. Patron saint feast day celebrations. Family prayer
before meals.
When my daughter was ten, her school principal—Sister Bernadette—died. Kara had never been to a funeral before, so we talked about what to expect, what to wear, and how to be a comforting presence to others. I explained that death is a part of life and
that because of our faith, we don’t have to be afraid of death. When we
got to the funeral, the church was packed! Kara was impressed by how many people came to remember Sister Bernadette and celebrate her life. I explained that the funeral was for us to say good-bye. Later, at the reception, Kara was surprised to see people laughing and joking. I explained that, far from being disrespectful, this was another way to remember Sister and how she touched our lives. Sister Bernadette was gone, but going to her funeral reminded us that we would see her again in Heaven.
In this Gospel reading, we meet three men who were eager to be Jesus’ disciples, but weren’t yet disciple-ready. The rst man was caught up by Jesus’ message but he wasn’t prepared for the cost. Jesus had no home, no shelter, and no family – none of the things people then considered necessary for a happy life. It is not always comfortable to be a Christian. The second man was also eager. Burying one’s parent was considered a binding religious duty among the Jews, so he wanted to bury his parents before
Enjoy your happy family
becoming Jesus’ disciple. Yet, when Jesus says “it’s time to act,” little else matters. We must act in God’s time, not
ours. In the third story, Jesus explained that looking back while plowing can ruin the row. He wanted the third man to understand that we need
determination for discipleship.
What can a parent do? Remind children that it isn’t always easy to be a follower of Jesus. There are luxuries we have to give up and comforts we may have to sacrice, but the rewards will be unimaginable.
