Thursday 25 September 2014 Issue 313 IMAGE: Jackie and Geoff Yeo Finns Store Takes It To The Next Level It’s been four years since Jackie and Geoff Yeo restored Finns store. Together they transformed the desolate, silent shop into a vibrant centre of social activity. The mix of coffee, food, clothing, jewellery, and furniture gave the shop a sense of old world charm merged with modern expectations. More recently, by incorporating the exquisite art and furniture of Ducks Back Studio with local wines, the shop has been able to embrace the beauty of Canowindra’s art, food and wine scene. Over the past 4 years Jackie and Geoff have seen a definite increase in the numbers of lo- cals and visitors to their store so they have decided it’s time to take it to the next level. To complement the wonderful food served and the functions being held, the store has just become fully licensed! This new service gives customers amazing choices of local wines and local and imported beers to en- joy whilst browsing the art, jewellery and clothing in store or to sip whilst savouring a beautiful meal. On Fridays the shop opens until around 7 giving people the chance to enjoy evening drinks with a popular sharing or grazing plat- ter or one of Jackie’s Plates of the day. Geoff laid out the future for Finns, “Long term our focus is to be a beacon for Canowindra, a place where locals can mix with visitors, a venue that promotes our wonderful wines, food and art, a venue that has an array of clothing, jewellery and furniture and a venue that is a ‘licensed cafe emporium’.” Sounds like the shop that has it all! Local Business News DAROO FINALISTS ANNOUNCED!Finalists for the 2014 Cabonne Daroo Busi-ness Awards have been announced following an overwhelming response from customers who voted for their favourites. Organisers have spent the past week counting more than 8800 votes to determine four finalists in 13 categories. Awards Chairman Bruce Buchanan said the public response has been amazing. “The awards moved to a popular vote format in 2013 which struck a real chord with the community,” he said. “However, this year the number of votes was more than double last year’s which shows the Daroo’s continue to go from strength to strength.” More than 80 businesses accepted nomina-tions from the public which then cast their votes to determine the winners. A $3000 television advertising package on the WIN TV network awaits this year’s outstanding business when the winners are announced at a gala dinner in Molong on Friday 7thNo-vember 2014. Cabonne Mayor Michael Hayes said the Daroo Awards showcased the quality and

IMAGE: Graeme Eggleston and “Giggles” (Cara Woods), the Camp Kids mascot, celebrate the trek’s arrival at Canowindra Showground on Friday.

Tractor Trekkers Praise Canowindra And Its Lions

The sound of horns blasting and engines chugging reverberated through Canowindra on Friday as the annual Camp Quality Tractor Trek swept through our town, leaving behind glowing praise for the community and the lo-cal Lions Club. According to trek director Graeme Eggles-ton the visit, featuring a gala auction evening at the Canowindra Services Club, will have raised a whopping $8,000 or more locally in funds for Camp Quality kids when the final tally for the entire trek is completed in No-vember. “The response from Canowindra was one of the big highlights of the trek. I have to say that the Lions Club did an excellent job, and are to be congratulated and commended, in organising the auction evening. The event

raised $5,900 in a raffle, and the Lions themselves donated another $500” Graeme stated. The number of tractor owners taking part was slightly down on last year – 28 vehicles roaring, hooting and whistling through 13 re-gional towns and hamlets. “There were a couple of illnesses this year,” says Graeme, “but 28 trekkers have said they’ll be back on the road next year.” Unlike the previous two annual treks, this one didn’t travel to big centres like Orange, Dubbo and Oberon, yet the response com-pares more than favourably in money raised. And Graeme Eggleston singled out tiny Gooloogong as an example of the support by the region’s small communities. “The schoolkids in Gooloogong have raised $400

by themselves over the past eight months. “They reflect the way the smaller towns in particular get right behind the Tractor Trek. They treat it as a community effort, and they give us the best results by far.” Camp Quality provides leisure relief and support for some 42 families of children with cancer throughout the region. On behalf of Camp Quality, Roy White would like to thank all the businesses, or-ganisation and individuals for all their help in raising money. So far in excess of $230,000 has been raised on the three day Central West tour, smashing the original target of $170,000. Roy, who rumbled through Canow-indra in his bright yellow Chamberlain trac-tor, will be selling the fantastically colourful Camp Quality Tractor Trek hats on Saturday at the Canowindra Show, just keep an eye out for the big tractor to buy one for yourself!

Another Good Day At The Yards…It was another successful sales day on Mon-day at the Cowra Regional Livestock Selling Centre. Coomera wearing buyers bounced from one area of the yard to another as the sales were completed with their usual light-ning speed. Around 400 good quality cattle were sold at the yards, with bulls leading the pack due to a rise in exports of grinding beef to America (those USA folk do love a good burger!) Bulls sold up to 214 cents a kilo with one bull making $2483. Cows were sold to 175 cents a kilo. Heifers were up to 202 cents a kilo and steers were up to 206 a kilo. The Selling Centre specialises in prime cattle sales every Monday from 12.30pm and prime lamb and sheep sales on Friday’s at 11am, with the majority of the livestock sourced from the Belubula and Lachlan Valleys. The Centre is linked to 7 livestock selling agent companies operating out of Cowra,3 of which are JJ Dresser & Co, Landmark and Allan Gray

& Co. Landmark is located close to the Livestock Selling Centre on the Young Road. Though the company has extended to branches all over Australia, those branches still like to support local events. JJ Dresser & Co moved from Mandurama to Woodstock in 1947 where they remain to this day. Since those early years, the com-pany has traded and continued to expand. Staff members bring individual attributes and skills to the company, developing the strong and trusted agency you do business with today business with today. Allan Gray & Co are a Livestock and Prop-erty Agents supplier that have been breed-ing lambs for over 60 years. Established in 1924, they provide the full range of services including sheep and livestock agents over an extended service area.

What Women Want...

Find Yourself In Bali, Without The ClichésAh the age old question, what do women re-ally want? Last time I checked I was a woman and I want only a few simple things in life, to have a successful, well paid job, a loving part-ner, a happy life and to be able to eat copious amounts of crisps and stay thin. These are all aspirations I believe I can achieve eventually (apart from the crisp one) but a goal I’ve al-ways wanted to reach was to be able to medi-tate successfully. I believe I’ve only managed it once, when I was fourteen and sat in the garden breathing slowly and trying to empty my mind. Sudden-ly I was looking over the fence into my own garden at myself sat there, like some sort of ghost. I’m convinced this was an out of body experience though sadly I’ve never been able to replicate it, more than likely due to me al-ways wondering whether I left the stove on when I try to clear my head. Yoga has been less successful. I went to a Yoga class a few years back and after moving from the downward dog into the child’s pose I felt the risk of me emitting bodily noises was far too real. But just because I’m about as flexible as a tour of North Korea, doesn’t mean you should give up on these two meth-ods of mind and body improvement, especial-ly if it involves going to Bali… With The Perfect Health Centre you have the chance to learn the Chopra Centres Primor-dial Sound Meditation in one of the most spir-itual and secluded locations in Bali. Spend 7 days experiencing healing and professional Ayurvedic treatments, twice daily transforma-

tive yoga and meditation practices and life-changing Ayurvedic sessions run by Chopra Centre Master Educator Robyn Lynch. During this week you will not only find in-credible healing, leaving you feeling pampered and revitalised, you will also learn tools and techniques to cultivate physical health and emotional well-being when you return home. In this beautiful environment you will feel your stress and tension melt away as you are guided through the ancient healing wisdom of Ayurveda combined with the wisdom of the Chopra Centre’s signature meditation prac-tice, developed by Drs. Deepak Chopra and David Simon.

Renew...Completely renew with Ayurvedic treatments, meditation, yoga, liberating and informative sessions and personal time to enjoy the serenity and beauty of Bali’s lead-ing Ayurvedic Retreat Centre.

Learn...Learn about Meditation as the number one healer and how to make it a regular nourishing practice within your life.

Let go...Let go of physical and emotional stress.

Deepen...Learn more about cooking and eating for health and happiness, with a focus on Ayurvedic practices and Deepak Chopras recent book “What Are You Hungry For?”

Enjoy...Enjoy a regular daily yoga practice where we unravel the “Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” and how they translate on and off the mat.

The Bali Retreat will be running from Octo-ber 25th to the 31st.

BYE BYE BOYSAfter enjoying nearly 14 years of their company at the Canowindra Trading Post, it’s been a bittersweet farewell to Rob and Nick as they begin an exciting new chapter in their lives. This week “the boys”, as they are affectionately known, welcomed Gleniss Lawrence as the new owner. Over their decade and a half here they have made lifelong friends and fond memo-ries. Nick and Rob would like to thank the beautiful people they have worked with for every day they shared together. To their dear and dearest customers, “Thank you for your love and support, without you we would have had nothing.”

New Mayor Takes On Successful ShireNew Mayor Michael Hayes has taken on the job at a good time for Cabonne Council, which has returned a surplus for the eighth successive year whilst a third of the State’s councils are operating in the red. In the past financial year, Cabonne spent almost $12 million on roads and completed a number of major projects, including the $2m redevelopment of Canowindra Pool. The pool was funded entirely by the council without re-lying on Government grants. Announcing the latest local government reform proposals this month, NSW Premier Mike Baird said a third of the State’s councils were facing major financial problems, collec-tively losing up to $400 million a year. Despite this, the latest audited financial statements shows Cabonne Council are surpassing all of the Premier’s objectives. Mr Hayes has been a councillor for two years and hopes to continue the success of Cabonne where others are falling short. “This is an austere environment. We have to main-tain services ratepayers deserve, make every dollar count and ensure ratepayers get a say in what happens” Mayor Hayes stated.

As a boy Mayor Hayes went to school in Ma-nildra and left in 1975 to take up an electrician apprenticeship with Yeoval County Council. In 1996 he joined the family business of Oils Plus, who provide quality fuels and lubricants to many of our local famers, and is now the Manager. Michael says he feels “humbled” to be Mayor and contrary to what appeared as a shock de-cision last week, Michael has known former Mayor Ian Gosper for many years and was asked by him if he would consider the role in 2013. He describes the council as a “big family” who make decisions together. Mayor Hayes has been married for 32 years and his eldest daughter is due to have a baby in 2 weeks, congratulations! He also has a second daughter and a younger son, plus three dogs to complete the family. He first got into local government at the suggestion of a friend to which he replied, “yeah, I’ll give it a crack!”At the question of seeing him at the Canowin-dra show Mayor Hayes said, “I’ll stick my ugly head in for a look!” Canowindra looks forward to seeing you Mayor!

“We feel truly blessed that you were a part of our story with the Canowindra Trading Post. There have been many achievements along the way, both professional and pri-vate, and we are proud of all of them” said Rob & Nick “We wish Gleniss every success as she officially takes the reins. We are ex-cited by the plans she has shared with us - so watch this space!”

This is not “Goodbye” from Nick and Rob as they have happily chosen to stay with us in Canowindra and look forward to seeing everyone in the weeks to come. As they would say, “Toodles!” for now!

If you want a completely unique experience, take a trip into the sky in a hot air balloon then enjoy a delicious ploughman’s lunch over a bottle of wine at Toms Waterhole. The winery owners, Jan, Graham and Anton, offer a vari-ety of options tailored to suit your needs. “It’s the prettiest time of year to fly!” she says. The red hot deal at the moment up at the winery is that patrons will receive 20% off or a

free bottle of Humpers Tawny Port with every case purchase for Canowindra residents and their friends until the 15th October. The port has been barrelled for 14 years, giving it a rich flavour sure to please. They are currently open for Christmas party bookings but make sure you get in early be-cause the dates are filling up fast! Some fun balloon facts…1. Toy balloons were invented by Michael

Faraday in 1824. He used balloons to store gases.

2. In 1808, two Parisians fought a duel in balloons. One died when his balloon was shot and crashed.

3. The first living creatures to fly in a hot-air balloon were a sheep, a cockerel and a duck, sent up by the Montgolfier broth-ers in September 1783.

4. All survived but the cockerel broke a wing, probably because it was kicked by the sheep.

WHAT’S New

Ocsober for OctoberThere’s only one week to go until Ocsober and it’s time to lose the booze to help Aussie kids. Alcohol causes 15 deaths and hospital-ises 430 Australians every day. Life Educa-tion, the organisation behind the annual Oc-sober campaign, is challenging Australians to use their willpower, lose the booze this October and fundraise in support of the pre-ventative drug and alcohol programmes they deliver in schools. “There is no time better than right now to stand up and take action. Adults across Aus-tralia need to help prevent our future gen-erations from adopting these alcohol related patterns by signing up for Ocsober 2014 and teaching kids to find their willpower and learn about the effects of alcohol,” says Life Education NSW CEO, Jay Bacik. This year, Life Education is aiming to raise $1million during Ocsober, which will enable the not-for-profit to reach many more children across Austral-ia, empowering them to make better choices and lead healthier and safer lives. Register today at www.ocsober.com.au to create your individual or group fundraising page.

IMAGE: Jarrod and Mel are ready for the new swimming season

Canowindra’s recently refurnished swimming pool opens on Saturday 4th October at 10am, but before the doors open officially the Annual ‘’Icebreakers’’ will take place on Thursday the 2nd October at 5.30pm. This event is run to raise money for a cause and for locals to come and christen the pool for the 2014/15 season. Jarrod is challenging everyone to come along, pay $20 and take the plunge. All money raised will go to the Canowindra Swimming Club. Canowindra Swimming Club has a proud his-tory in the town and is holding an information night on Friday 10th October to welcome new and old members to the new season and pro-vide information on registration. If you have a confident swimmer who would like to join and race on Friday nights put this date in your diary. Other activities taking place throughout the season will be Bootcamp, Aqua Therapy (Aero-bics), Swimming Lessons, School Swimming, Squad Training and Early Morning Lap Swim-ming. Jarrod and Lisa would like to remind the pub-

lic that the pool will be open every day from 10am till 6pm, that the solar heating is up and running, the new shade sails have been in-stalled, the BBQ facilities are available free of charge and the most important thing of all..... The Deep Fryer will be up and running and the famous hot chips will be available to not only pool goers but also the general public. Canowindra is fortunate this season with the introduction of a new Swimming School. ‘’Just Keep Swimming ‘’is owned and oper-ated by local mum Mel Stanbury. Mel saw a demand for swimming lessons and having trained and taught as a swimming teacher de-cided to use her skills to help local children gain a skill for life. Mel has been in and around water her whole life and has worked as a lifeguard both in pools and beach environments as well has worked as a swimming instructor. Mel is an Austswim qualified teacher and has just completed her training with Royal Life Saving which now enables her to teach both swim-ming lessons and safety skills.

Just Keep Swimming will be running three terms of swimming over this season, these will start with term 4 starting on the 6th Oc-tober , a 10 day intensive course during the xmas holidays and term 1 2015. A registration day is being held at the pool on Saturday the 4th October. For more infor-mation check out the Facebook page or email [email protected]
