BRETHREN — The
COVID-19 pandemic took
many special end of year
moments away from the 34
members of the 2020 grad-
uating class at Brethren
High School, but one thing
it couldn’t come close to
touching was their Bobcat
pride.Saturday’s virtual grad-
uation ceremony at the
school may not have had
bleachers overflowing with
proud parents, grandpar-
ents, relatives and friends,
nor were the sounds of the
school band playing its tra-
ditional stirring rendition
of the “Battle Hymn of the
Republic.” There wasn’t
even the sounds of “Pomp
and Circumstance” as the
graduates marched into
the gymnasium in pairs
stepping under the trellis of
blue and white balloons to
flashing cameras.
However, there was
pride — Bobcat pride and
lots of it as the graduates
were individually presented
their diplomas by school
officials over the course of
the day for a video that will
be shown at a time yet to be
announced.The phrase “small school,
big family” adorns the sign
in front of Brethren School,
and those words instilled
a sense of pride in the
graduates as they arrived to
receive their diplomas. That
was more than obvious
MANISTEE — Amidst
fireworks, hat tossing and
plenty of emotion, several
hundred people gathered
at Manistee Catholic
Central’s Saber Stadium
on Saturday evening to
give a big sendoff to the
class of 2020.
This year there was
only eight students (plus
two foreign exchange
students) receiving
diplomas during com-
mencement ceremonies,
but after the COVID-19
pandemic disrupted the
end of their school year
the community wanted to
give them a big sendoff.
The big night began
with a parade consist-
ing of roughly 200 fire
trucks, police, trucks
pulling front end loaders,
family, friends, alumni
and members of the
community sounding
off sirens and horns to
honor the graduates. All
the graduates and their
parents stood outside the
entrance to the school and
were honored with good
wishes, flowers, cards and
a variety of gifts as the
parade passed by them.
Plenty of pictures
were taken during and
after the parade before
everyone moved to Saber
Stadium for the ceremony.
Graduates were led
to their seats by church
and school officials, and

MANISTEE — The Manistee Area
Chamber of Commerce is leading
an initiative to “reinvigorate River
Street for businesses and visitors.”
During its 7 p.m. remote meeting
on Tuesday, Manistee City Council
will consider adopting that plan that
would allow for partial closures to
vehicular traffic on River Street to
support businesses expanding oper-
ations “during COVID-19 precau-
tions.”The proposal has been developed
at the request of city staff and weekly
merchant meetings, according to the
city council agenda.
The Manistee Downtown Devel-
opment Authority (DDA) gave its
support during its May 13 board
meeting. “The Manistee DDA is actively
communicating through weekly
Business Development Committee
meetings and merchant meetings
collecting feedback on the best
ways to support the reopening of
our businesses during this time,”
reads a letter to city council from
the DDA and former executive
director Caitlyn Berard.
“Merchants are interested in
‘open air markets’ and expanded
outdoor seating. The first step to
address these concerns is supporting
the efforts proposed in the Reinvig-
orated River Street for Business and
Visitors proposal.”

MANISTEE — Over the
past 45 years, Manistee
County residents have
counted on Dial-A-Ride
drivers to take them where
they need to go. Now,
during the coronavirus
pandemic, the public
transportation provider
has never been more
essential — or risky.
The familiar green Dial-
A-Ride buses have become
a common sight at food
pantries, grocery stores
and pharmacies through-
out the county.
Increasingly, drivers
are being asked to deliver
essentials to homebound
seniors and other patrons
who are sheltering at
home during the state of
emergency.“Instead of delivering
passengers to the food
bank, we’re delivering the
food to the passenger so
they don’t ride the bus,”
said Dial-A-Ride driver
Larry Budde. “Typically
before the pandemic we
would deliver a lot of
people to the food banks.
Now we’re going to those
places and loading up
our buses and taking it to
them.”Dial-A-Ride drivers
delivered roughly 530
packages of groceries and
prescriptions to residents
in April, according to
Denise Peters, operations
manager.“The month of May
isn’t even done and we’ve
already exceeded those
530 packages,” Peters said.
Deemed an essential
service under Gov.
Gretchen Whitmer’s
stay-home order, those
employed by Manistee
County Transportation
— which operates the
Dial-A-Ride program —
have instituted several
changes to mitigate the risk
of transmitting disease.
These include mandatory
masking, a stricter sanita-
tion regimen and restrict-
ing nonessential travel.
“For the most part
people are very apprecia-
tive and respectful,” said
driver Curtis Gauthier.
“The biggest thing (riders)
can do right now is wear a
mask.”While the precautions
have been successful thus
far, drivers worry about
interacting with patrons
who may unwittingly
spread the virus.
“All it takes is one
person, and several
of our drivers … were
more concerned about
their families and older
(relatives),” said Budde.
Traditionally Dial-A-
Ride drivers could expect
to shepherd around 800
passengers each day, but
ridership has dropped
to only 10% of the usual
rate, Peters said. Due to
the declining number
of passengers, Manistee
County Transportation
has reduced the number of
drivers from 25 to five at
the lowest point.
“If the state should
reopen after June 12, then
I will bring back more
drivers,” Peters said. “As of
right now, we’re in a stand-
still.”Though ridership has
plummeted, Dial-A-Ride
employees have stopped
collecting fares from
patrons and now delivers
groceries and prescriptions
for free.Peters said the pandemic
has been difficult on many
of her drivers with young
children and elderly family
members.“They’ve all made sacri-
fices to be here to support
our public,” she said.

Husband.Father.
Outdoorsman.
After having a place in the area for a number of years and loving everything the area has to offer, we were able to turn our long-time dream of living in Northern Michigan to a reality this past summer when we moved up from Detroit! It was our goal to have our daughters experience everything that small-town living has to offer, much like my wife and I grew up with. Prior to working for the News Advocate, I worked in Sales for the Detroit Red Wings for 20 years. I have met so many fantastic people in the area and I look forward to helping local businesses reach their audience and maximize their business! I’m an avid outdoorsman who loves fishing (especially for steelhead and salmon), deer hunting and ice fishing. If you see me in one of the area tackle shops, on the Big Manistee River or a local lake, be sure to say hi!
