INTRODUCTION
The Health ManpoWer Act of 1968, Title II, Nut§e Training,amended and extended the Nurse training Act of 1964 throughJune 30, 1971. Title II provided Federal aid to both studentsof-nursing and schools of nursing for the purPose,of producinglarger numbers of qualified nurses. The special project grantSprovision of Title I_ I atithoriied fun& to schools of nursing,public or nonprofit private agencies, organizations, or institu-tions to help support the additional costs of projects for theplanning, development, and establishment Of programs ofnursing education and to help meet the costs of improving,expanding, and strengthening the quality and effectiveness ofprograms of nurse training.
The DiviSien of Nursing of the Bureau Of Health ManpowerEducation, National Institutes of Health, annually issues asummary listing of the projects funded from the start of theprogram in June 1965. The current list contains projects fundedthrough June 1971, and it includes planning grantS, which wereawarded for the first time during fiscal year 1970. The com-pleted projects are listed on pages 67-96. The intent of listingthe grants awarded is to notify schools of nursing about thekinds of projects being funded and to enable the schools toshare information about project results. A more comprehensivereview of the projects may be obtained by writing to theschools and other sponsors.
Information about the awarding of grants and the procedurefor applying to receive a grant award is contained in the book-let, Special Project Grants for Improvement in Nurse Train-ing, available from the Division of Nursing.

A film on eating behavior in young children was designed toclarify content in the first course in basic nursing science. Anothergroup of students in the same course took part in the accustomedlearning experience and observed the same behavior in the livingsetting.
The effectiveness of the film as an alternative learning experiencewas determined in part by pre-testing and post-testing of the stu-dents. The use of the filmed behavioral sequence as a unit of studyin basic nursing science was explored.

Content for proposed theoretical and practical course work forpreparation of the clinical specialist was identified. Tools were devel-oped for the clinical specialist to use in assessing nursing care re-quirements, in communicating with other nurses about these re-quirements, and in measuring the influence of the clinical specialiston patients' responses to treatment.
