Pastoral Ponderings
“The true measure of a
man is how he treats someone
who can do him absolutely no
good.” (a!ributed to 18th
century writer Samuel Johnson)
We can become so starry-
eyed in the presence of
powerful and influen#al people!
There is an irra#onal a!rac#on
about celebrity, fooling us into
thinking that we are more
special if someone famous should happen to no#ce us. We
fall prey to it around athletes, musicians, movie stars,
poli#cians, and all the movers and shakers of the world.
Though we claim to value equality, or strive to treat
everyone with the same dignity, we regularly place greater
worth on those who have pres#ge in the eyes of the world.
Given this human tendency, it’s no wonder that the
Apostles – who were very much like us – fell into arguing
about who was the greatest. They were hoping to leverage
their connec#on with Jesus into a higher status. James
must have had this sort of incident in mind when he wrote
to the early Chris#ans about the perils of jealousy and
selfish ambi#on. Such pursuits are contrary to the Holy
Spirit, “the wisdom from above.” When the focus of our
rela#onships is “what’s in it for me?”, then we are moving
in the exact opposite direc#on of God’s kingdom.
In a vivid teaching moment, Jesus iden#fies Himself not
with the powerful, but rather with the weakest member of
His society: a child. Our current crisis – in the Church and
beyond – drives home the point that we owe deference to
the vulnerable. If we sincerely wish to unite ourselves to
Christ, then vic#ms and the marginalized must be at the
very top of our list of priori#es. Do the weak of the world
have a voice in our poli#cs or our courtrooms? Do leaders
in the Church or in the business world consider the impact
of their decisions on the defenseless?
In this Eucharist we have a stunning reminder of God’s
profound humility. So great is His love for us that, laying
aside His glory, the Creator of the cosmos comes to us in a
morsel of bread. So deep is His compassion that, binding
Himself to our weakness, He allows Himself to be broken
and shared by a crowd of stumbling sinners. So humble is
the heart of this King that He makes Himself a servant to
fulfill our deepest hunger.
We can add nothing to the Father’s glory by our worship
or service, and yet He has treated us as His beloved
children. “Whoever receives one such child as this…
receives Me.” We reveal our hearts in the hospitality and
a!en#on we extend to others. Let us greet a stranger and
learn someone’s name whom we might otherwise
overlook. Let us offer a helping hand and a hear'elt prayer
for a neighbor in need. In everything we do, let us lay
down our lives in imita#on of our humble Savior. -Steve Pable, Pastoral Associate

Scrip News!
Good news! The weekend Scrip sellers have a new
permanent loca#on at the new desk located next to the
Geiger St. entrance! Look for their familiar faces there and
thank them for their dedicated service each weekend!
Speaking of service, we are in need of addi#onal volunteers
to sell Scrip a*er Masses on the weekends. We are looking
for parishioners familiar with using Scrip who would be willing
to sell Scrip a*er Mass on Saturdays or Sundays on a rota#ng
schedule once every 4 or 5 weeks. We have many dedicated
volunteers who have been working at the Scrip table a*er
Mass for years and some have “re#red”. Maybe your family
has benefited by earning tui#on credit through the Scrip
program and you would now like to give back to the parish.
Volunteers are welcome to sign up individually or as couples/
families. Please call the parish office if you are willing to help
out with this important service to the parish.

Chairperson needed! Our Social Concerns commi!ee is searching
for a new chairperson. Responsibili#es include caring for others and a desire to work together to help as the hands and feet of Jesus, recognizing the dignity and value in each human person. We meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month to discuss the needs of our community and the world and how we can best meet those needs. We organize projects, facilitate collec#ons of supplies, gi*s and funds, support the ac#ve ministries, and serve as a resource for collabora#on and assistance. Some specific examples of our work are the Thanksgiving food drive, Giving Tree, gi*s for mothers at Chris#ne Ann Center for Domes#c Abuse, collabora#ng with local elementary schools and counselors to help children in poverty, organizing COTS meal ministry volunteers (while we seek a new chairperson for this ministry), and working with our Youth Ministry to address current issues. Some of our projects are recurring, some are in response to par#cular needs or events. All are ways to share God's love and give our St. Gabe's family opportuni#es to live their faith through helping others.
We encourage you to call or text Chrissy 920-252-2582, or email chrissy o10@ mail.com to express interest and to learn more. Chrissy's the current chairperson, and will happily serve alongside our new chairperson to help with the transi#on.
Crea#ng Space for Encounters with Jesus
We take care of the basics for Mass - sacristan, servers, musicians, readers, ushers... but have we thought
about what might make this extraordinary and amazing? · Welcoming not just those you know but those who are
new, alone, young adults, and those with special needs. Go out of your way to make them feel a part of things - wanted and welcome.
· Con#nue that welcome during Mass – help those who are new with our communion rou#ne, or invite them, to coffee and donuts a*er Mass and SIT with them, introducing them to others.
· Invite people back for next weekend or to something happening midweek. Take advantage of the #me you have with the people there - make the most of it.
When people feel welcome and at home, comfortable and content, they are open to hear the Word and experience Jesus in the Eucharist. Be the kind of community that welcomes with JOY!
Greeters and Ushers
We are planning to expand our Ministry of Hospitality at St. Gabriel! Greeters and Ushers are the first point of contact for those who enter our doors. We are looking for people who like to smile, interact with others and just be available to help those in need. This ministry is quite simple and highly flexible! You can arrive a bit early to a Mass you already a!end and greet at the doors or usher the people during the service. Schedules come out quarterly and YOU decide how many Masses you can serve. We have openings at 4:30, 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Please contact Regina Reale @ 920-724-4914 ext. 226 to get you connected with the Team!

Grace Notes W$% &' () *+-/ ;< M;**? (con"nued from last week)
Singing is integral to liturgy because liturgy is a
celebra#on – a celebra#on of faith.
6. Some#mes words take on a much deeper meaning
when sung. The words of 'Happy Birthday' sound pre!y
silly when spoken rather than sung. The melody of
favorite hymns has become as much a part of their
message as the text. The meaning of a Mass response or
hymn is heightened when the melody reflects what the
words express. The joyful Cel#c Alleluia, for example, is
popular because the joyous lil#ng melody expresses so
well the Good News which it announces. An effec#ve
musical se=ng conveys a meaning that goes beyond the
words themselves.
5. Music allows us to express joy and enthusiasm.
4. The lively rhythm of a musical se=ng can draw people
in and enable them to sing along, perhaps even to clap in
#me with the music! Singing offers us a way of expressing
joy and enthusiasm that is not possible by any other
means. Elizabeth Harrington, Liturgy Lines
