    1. Globe-model of earth

    2. Axis-a needle fixed through the globe in a tilted manner

    3. The two ends North pole and South pole

    4. Equator- imaginary line that divides the earth into Northern hemisphere and

    Southern hemisphere

    5. Latitudes- parallel circles from equator to the poles

    6. Equator is 0 degree and the poles are 90 deg

    7. All are imaginary lines

    8. Tropic of Cancer is 23 deg north

    9. Tropic of Capricorn is 23 deg south

    10. Arctic circle is 66 deg N

    11. Antarctic circle is 66 deg S

    12. Torrid zone- area between Tropic of cancer and Tropic of Capricorn-maximum heat

    13. Temperate zones-area between Tr of Can and Arctic circle and Tr of Cap and

    Antarctic circle-moderate temperature

    14. Frigid zone-area between the circles and poles-very cold

    15. Longitudes-imaginary lines from north to south- equal in length

    16. Prime meridian-Meridian through Greenwich where British Royal Observatory is

    located-0 deg. 0 deg to 180 deg East and 180 deg west are drawn

    17. Longitude 82 deg East is standard meridian to measure time. The time here is

    1. Rotation movement of earth on its axis-24 hours

    2. Revolution-movement of earth around sun-365 days and 6 hours

    3. The 6 hours added up and it becomes 1 day extra (in February) once in 4 years

    called leap year

    4. Orbital plane-plane formed by orbit

    5. Circle of illumination-the circle that divides day from night on globe

    6. Seasons-summer, winter, autumn and spring occurs due to revolution

    7. 21st June-Longest day and shortest night in the north. It is summer here-south is

    cool and has winter. This is Summer solstice

    8. 22nd December-direct rays of sun on Tr of Cap-Winter Solstice

    9. 21st March and 23rd September-direct rays of sun on equator-equal day and equal

    night on the earth called equinox

    LESSON 1

    1. India a land of diversities

    2. Ladakh-a desert in the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir-no rain-snow covered-

    sheep rearing is done-pashmina wool and shawls are famous-it is also called little Tibet-Muslims live here

    3. Kerala-a state in the southwest corner of India-surrounded by sea on one side and

    hill on the other-spices like pepper, cloves and cardamoms grow well

    4. Both these places are different in geographical features but similar in cultural

    influences. Both were influenced by Chinese and Arab traders
