Poster Sessions – Tuesday and Thursday, May 17, 19, 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM Banquet – Wednesday, May 18, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM The banquet will take place at INPE’s recreation area (see map), nearby LIT. There will be a buffet with salads and vegetables. The main disch will be the Brazilian barbecue served in an all-you-can-eat basis. The following drinks are included (up 4 to each person): water, soft drinks, juices and beer, and caipirinha (up to 3 for person). The banquet is included in the full registration fee. Additional tickets (for accompanying persons or for the ones who did nor pay full registration fee) can be purchased at the registration desk.

For a long time he worked as aResearchScientistandaSeniorResearchScientist

attheRostovStateUniversityandRostovPedagogicalInstitute,Rostov-on-Don,USSR. From1993 to 2010heworked at theCourant Institute ofMathematicalSciences,NewYorkUniversity,NewYorkCity,USA,asa researchscientist.Hisbroadscientificinterestsincludecosmicgasdynamics,corrugationinstabilityofshockwaves,nonlineardynamics,chaos theory, fractionalcalculus.Hispresentscientific activity is concentrated on the fractional dynamical systems andsystems with power-law memory. He is a member of the editorial boards of“Journal of AppliedNonlinearDynamics” and “Fractional Calculus andAppliedAnalysis”. His recent publications include three book chapters and numerousjournalarticles.Hewas InvitedSpeakeratnumerous internationalconferencesHehasreceivedtheAmericanAstronomicalSocietyGrantawardedfortheinves tigationofthestabilityofobliqueMHDshockwaves.Since2009Dr.Edelmanhasbeen teaching various physics courses and supervising student’s research atStern College for Women, Yeshiva University, simultaneously continuing hisresearchattheCourantInstitute.Abstract:Systemswithpower-lawmemoryarecommoninnaturalandsocialsciencesandengineering.Themostappealingisappearanceofpower-lawmemoryinbiologicalapplications. A consistent consideration of discrete systems with power-lawmemorycan be done through the use of fractional Eulerian numbers. It can be shown thatsystemswithpower-lawmemorycanbedescribedbyfractionaldifference/differentialequations.Due to the integro-differentialnatureof fractionalderivatives, investigationofgeneralproperties of fractional differential equation is very difficult. To investigate generalproperties of fractional dynamics we consider fractional maps, which can be derivedfrom fractional differential equationswith periodic kicks or, in the case of essentiallydiscrete systems, from fractional difference equations. Using the fractional standardmap(harmonicnonlinearity)andthefractionallogisticmap(quadraticnonlinearity)asexamplesweshowthatnonlinearsystemswithpower-lawmemorydemonstrateanewtype of attractors - cascade of bifurcation type attractors, power-lawconvergence/divergence of trajectories, bifurcations with changes in the memoryparameter,intersectionoftrajectories,andoverlappingofattractors.

Paulo-SP,Brazil;Tuesday,May17th,2016FMauditorium-SecondFloorDr.JoséRobertoCastilhoPiqueirawasborn inSorocaba, SP,Brazil, in1952.Hereceived the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering fromUniversidadedeSãoPauloin1974,1983,and1987,respectively.From1974to1994,heworked inseveral telecommunicationprojects forBrazilianelectronicand service industries, designing and developing circuits, equipments, andsystems. Since1994,hehasbeendedicated to teachingand researchatEscolaPolitécnica da Universidade de São Paulo, and participating in projects forBrazilian Oil Agency and Brazilian Navy. Currently, he is a Full Professor andDeanofSãoPauloEngineeringSchool,workingwithtimedistributionnetworksand running a laboratory where analytical and numerical studies supportelectronic andoptical experiments, considering the several possible topologiesandquantumcontrolmodels.Besides,assynchronouscomplexnetworksappearinmanyaspectsofhuman life,heworkswithsomebiologicalmodelsbyusingdifferential equations and proposing complexitymeasures for some spreadingphenomena. Considering his areas of interest, he published a hundred ofcompletepapersininternationalperiodicalsandcongressproceedings,indexedintheWebofScience.Abstract:Phase-lockedloops(PLLs)aredevicesabletorecovertimesignalsinseveralengineering applications. The literature regarding their dynamical behavior is vast,specifically considering that the process of synchronization between the input signal,comingfromaremotesource,andthePLLlocaloscillationisrobust.Forhigh-frequencyapplicationsitisusualtoincreasethePLLorderbyincreasingtheorderoftheinternalfilter, for guarantying good transient responses; however local parameter variationsimplystructural instability, thusprovokingaHopfbifurcationandaroutetochaosforthephaseerror.Here,oneusualarchitectureforathird-orderPLLisstudiedandarangeofpermittedparametersisderived,providingaruleofthumbfordesigners.Outofthisrange,aHopfbifurcationappearsand,by increasingparameters, theperiodicsolutionoriginated by the Hopf bifurcation degenerates into a chaotic attractor, therefore,preventingsynchronization.

In contrast to permanent chaos associatedwith the asymptotic state,transient chaos are associated with a nonequilibrium state that has differentbehavior from the asymptotic behavior of a system. Examples of complexphenomena and dynamical structures related to transient chaos are: chaoticsaddles, chaotic leaking systems, crises, on-off intermittency, edge of chaos,chaotic advection, fractal basin boundaries, transport barriers, and turbulence.Thismini-symposiumaimstodiscusstheconceptsandapplicationsoftransientchaosinastrophysics,biology,fluids,andplasmas.

Description : The aim of this minisymposium is to drawn an overview fordynamical systems that can be described by scaling laws arguments and alsointerpret some of the phenomena that the non-linearity can bring to theirdynamics. Very often these systems may present chaotic behavior in bothdissipative andnon-dissipativedynamics. In thenon-dissipative case, amixedphasespace,withinvarianttori,KAMislandsandchaoticseasifoftenobserved.Dependingofthecombinationofcontrolparametersandinitialconditions,somevariables of these systems can be described by scaling laws and classes ofuniversalitycanbeobtained.Inthedissipativedynamics,chaoticattractorscanlead the dynamics to different scenarios, where transients and assymptoticbehavior of some variables can also be setup by scaling arguments. Also, self-similaritystructures in theparameterspacecanbeobtainedandcharacterizedbymeansofuncertaintyexponents,andanomaloustransportcanbeobrservedindifferentbilliardsystems.

Description : Severalmathematicalmodels that describemanyphenomena innatural sciences, such as physics, biology, engineering, and economics can bemodelled by nonlinear differential equations. However, it is difficult to obtainexactsolutionsofsuchnonlineardifferentialequations.TheLiegroupanalysisapproachisconsideredtobeamilestoneinthesearchforsolutions of nonlinear differential equations. In fact, although this approach isnot always able to characterize thewhole set of solutions, it allowsone to getwide classes of exact solutions in a methodological way. Moreover theknowledge of symmetries admitted by an equation does not bring only to areductionof independentvariablebutallowsus toget conservation lawsor tofirstintegrals.Inthelastfewdecades,alargeamountofpublicationsintheoreticalandappliedmathematics are devoted to the Lie group analysis methods and theirapplications.TheLiegroupmethodspecifiesandextendstheconceptofsymmetry,yieldstheeffective methods of symmetry applications in complicated situations, givescorrectstatementofproblemsand inmanycases indicates thepossiblewayoftheirsolutions.The aim of this minisymposium is to focus the attention of scientists on symmetry methods to search for exact solutions of nonlinear models in physics, in engineering science, and in biology as well as to show recent developments of the theoretical tools of the Lie group methods applicable to the study of differential equations.
