From our Pastor…
Please give a warm welcome to Fr. Jim Heithoff who will be filling in this weekend. My brother, Jim, and I are getting our childhood home cleaned up to be put on the market. This Thursday is Ascension Thursday--a holy day of obligation. We say in the Nicene Creed, “He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father”--that Jesus rose, by his own power, body and soul to Heaven 40 days af-ter rising from the dead. During his time on Earth, the Son of God was hidden in his humanity. Aside from his miracles, Jesus looked like anyone else. He eats, grows in wisdom, suffers bodily pain, feels isolated, etc. When he rises from the dead, he is seen in his glo-rified body, one that still bears the marks of his crucifixion, but feels no pain or suffering, can pass through walls, eat, not feel tired, etc. Jesus is still tied to time and space until he as-cends to Heaven where, in his humanity, he reigns over all (expressing fully his glory and honor in his divinity). He now is not in a particular place, but can be everywhere, day and night, to intercede for us to the Father, helping us in our journey to his Kingdom. He wants all of humanity to join him, so his final command to his Apostles before ascending was to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” If we honor Jesus’ resurrection, we should honor his ascension. To honor his ascension ex-presses our belief that Christ, as God, is number one in our lives and that we owe everything to him, should serve him out of love and bring more souls to him out of charity and necessity.
God’s Blessings,
