What a thrilling time to be a Hinman Member! The challenges have never been greater to host the “best dental meeting in America.” Atlanta will be the focus of the dental meeting community, with three large meetings in the 2017-2018 year. Hinman will need each and every single one of us to show our speakers, guests and attendees why we have earned the reputation in the industry as offering top-notch continuing education and the warmest southern hospitality.

I am very grateful and excited to serve as your President this year. You all make it easy to be your representative. Hinman is the envy of every other dental meeting because of you and the way you professionally conduct yourselves as Hinman members.

Last year’s President, Jonathan Dubin successfully guided the society and presented a wonderful annual meeting and membership meeting programs. He has been a good friend and a reliable mentor, and I am grateful to follow in his footsteps.

This year our membership meetings will be moving around to some exciting new venues. Program Chairman Sedgie Newsom and I are proud to have Dr. David Jones speak on September 19 at the Westin Buckhead Atlanta. His lecture topic will be, “The Temporomandibular Joint – The Foundation of the Masticatory System.” On November 7th, membership meeting will be held at the Westin Perimeter North, and Dr. Jason Olitsky will present “Esthetic Restoration Techniques.” The January 19 meeting will be back at the Georgia Aquarium and will be geared towards the entire dental office staff, with Dr. Uche Odiatu speaking

on “Work/Life Balance.” All lectures will begin at 4:00pm, followed by a short business meeting and dinner. We look forward to high attendance at each of our membership meetings this year, given the recent change in the bylaws, which now require that each Hinman member attend a minimum of one membership meeting per year.

This year, we will focus on providing our membership with more networking opportunities, and I hope you will join me at the first ever Hinman’s Member Mingle at the Emory Conference Center’s private bowling alley on October 6. This is sure to be a fun time with your Hinman friends.

Jane Puskas, Eddie Pafford and I have been hard at work on the program for Hinman 2017. As General Chairman, Jane selected the theme “The Changing Face of Dentistry” as our focus, and I think her timing for this is just perfect. If you are not yet on a committee for the March meeting, be sure to sign up! Try something new or, better yet, volunteer for all three days. The meeting will work better with your efforts.

In June of 2017 we will celebrate a successful 105th Hinman with our annual meeting trip to Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, Bahamas! David Marion is planning a spectacular vacation for us! Be sure to mark your calendar for June 1–4 and get those passports updated!

Please know that I look forward to meeting and spending time with each of you. Please call or email me if there is anything I can do to help you in your own personal Hinman journey. See you soon,

President’s Message

A Great

Year Ahead!

Our profession is changing with greater diversity and more women to better represent the population we treat. Dental equipment and technologies continue to change and thus improve the quality of care we provide our patients. The 2017 Hinman Dental Meeting will celebrate these changes. Just as Steve Penley took the photo of Dr. Thomas P. Hinman from the early 20th century and created a more current and contemporary portrait of our founding father, the Hinman Dental Society is becoming more contemporary and current. As we transform, the Hinman Dental Society must remain committed to our important legacy of providing the highest quality continuing education and dental philanthropy. Great traditions and the highest professional standards remain the cornerstone of the Hinman Dental Society. We have 105 years of great history and our changing face will insure our continued success in the 21st century.

The 2017 program reflects the changing face of Hinman. With my program chairmen, Eddie Pafford and Bob O’Donnell, we have found many new faces to speak in March, 2017. New to Hinman in 2017, attendees will be able to hear Gregg Kinzer, Ricardo Mitrani and Jim Janakievski present as an interdisciplinary team here in Atlanta instead of needing to fly all the way to Scottsdale, AZ. There are more than 70 hands-on courses including occlusion/restorative dentistry, implant surgery, sleep appliances, Botox, radiology/CBCT, periodontology and others.

Learn about the digital technology revolution with Paresh Shah from Canada. Check out Jason Olitsky to avoid the seven worst violations of smile design. Learn about the newest technologies and techniques. There are 25 faces new to Hinman in 2017 with so much new information.

The 2017 Hinman program has new and exciting material for everyone! We are excited to customize the very popular day-long programs/tracks for our newest dentists (GOLD), pediatric dentistry (CHOA partnership), hygienists (Prevention Convention), dental assistants (Assisting Extravaganza), office managers (Front Office Bonanza), lab technicians and women dentists. In addition, 85 courses are free for a nominal registration fee. It is a strong and innovative program that relies on the wonderful Hinman staff

and membership to succeed. Thank you!

Some changes in our profession are challenging the Hinman Dental Society and the success of our meeting. Specifically, attendance is declining for all major

dental meetings due in part to online CE, corporate dental CE and industry-sponsored CE. The Hinman Dental Society needs to find ways to attract more of our dental profession. Hinman members recognize the importance of creating a learning experience more meaningful than staring at a computer

screen. We are better dentists by gaining hands-on experience from the best in the country, by asking experts in the field about disturbing trends, by comparing new technologies side-by-side on the exhibit floor and by meeting colleagues who can mentor us or share real practice experience. So, I need your help. If each Hinman member invites one colleague who has not attended Hinman lately or ever, we will gain at least 800 more attendees so that they could also reap the many benefits of attending the Hinman meeting. Indeed, the face of the Hinman Dental Meeting is changing to be more current and relevant in these changing times. You are the changing face of Hinman.

The Hinman Task Force met last year to look at our society as a whole and make sure that the organization is headed in the right direction. Several great ideas came out of the task force and they will be implemented over the next couple of years. The consensus from the group is that the membership should be active and involved with the society. This support is crucial for a healthy organization. One way to accomplish activity on a more regular basis is through our quarterly membership meetings. It was suggested, voted on and approved, that all active members (non-emeritus) are required to attend one membership meeting each cycle.

Associate members are required to attend a membership meeting and/or work the Hinman meeting in March. The membership meetings are great opportunities for three hours of CE from top-notch lecturers, an opportunity to catch up with Hinman activities and members and also a nice meal and cocktails to finish out the evening. In addition, these meetings are a great value to the member, as the cost per person for each event is approximately $140 and the member cost is only $70-90. The board of trustees subsidizes the remaining cost for the member.

As a season ticket holder for more than 30 years, Dr. Robert O’Donnell is a true Georgia Bulldog fan and earned his bachelor’s degree in Microbiology at UGA. When he’s not at Sanford Stadium watching his favorite SEC team, he’s taking care of patients in Alpharetta, Georgia and spending time with his family – wife Cheryl, and two daughters, Kathleen (16) and Ryan (14).

Dr. O’Donnell has known he wanted to be a dentist since 8th grade Career Day at the University of Michigan. He enjoys the daily interaction with patients and gets great satisfaction from playing a role in life-changing oral health improvements. He’s been practicing dentistry since graduating from Emory Dental School in 1986 and completing a General Practice Residency at Emory in 1987. He opened a private practice in 1989.

In 1999, he and his wife purchased a 70-year-old, historic residence and transformed it into a state-of-the-art

dental office. Located at 134 North Main Street in downtown Alpharetta, the practice combines a historic atmosphere and furnishings with the latest in dental technology, like CEREC®.

Dr. O’Donnell became interested in organized dentistry early in his career and saw the value in networking with others, continuing to learn new developments in dentistry and furthering the profession overall. He has been a proud member of Hinman for more than 25 years and has served in nearly every leadership and volunteer role available. In his first 10 years with Hinman, he served on both the Information and Clinic Captain Committees. He and Cheryl have been hosts for numerous meetings. He also chaired Information, Clinic Captain, Participation and Concurrent Meeting Committees. He served as Treasurer of the 2016 Meeting and as Program Co-Chair of Hinman 2011 and next year’s Hinman 2017.

In addition to Hinman, he has served and chaired most committees of the Northern District, including becoming President in 2007. Dr. O’Donnell was the statewide Constitution and Bylaws Chairman for the past six years and was the ADA Alternate Delegate in 2015. He was the founding president of the Greater Atlanta Dental Foundation, serving as president for five years.

In addition to dentistry, Dr. O’Donnell is devoted to his family. He and Cheryl will mark their 20-year anniversary this year and celebrate in Ireland. He also enjoys golf and gardening, and admittedly, is living vicariously through his daughter Kathleen, who is pursuing her private pilot’s license. Becoming a pilot is a career he might have pursued if he had not become a dentist.

As President of the Hinman Dental Society, Dr. O’Donnell’s goal is to increase participation in the Society’s events. He and Cheryl have been very involved over the years in leading committees of the summer Annual Meeting and would like for members, both old and new, to take part in 2017. Next year, the Annual Meeting will be held literally in paradise – at Atlantis on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas.

“I’m thankful to have wonderful dental friends whom I’ve met over the years serving Hinman,” said O’Donnell. “I look forward to sharing this year as President with those competent leaders that came before me and with the help of the best staff anyone could ask for!”

Anniversary Celebration! We are inviting the Hinman Members to celebrate Sylvia’s 20 years with us at the upcoming membership meeting on September 19 at the Westin Buckhead Atlanta during the dinner portion of the evening. Come by and congratulate Sylvia on her 20 years with Hinman. There will also be an opportunity to raise a toast to Sylvia. Hope you can attend!

“Devotion to detail is the secret of success” – Dr. Thomas P. HinmanThe Hinman Dental Society has been fortunate to have an Executive Director who, for 20 years, has been a shining example of Dr. Hinman’s motto. She has impacted the society and meeting in so many ways that have contributed to its great success and growth since she joined us in 1996. Her attention to detail and genuine concern about the society and meeting show through in her day-to-day efforts and translate into continuing the ideals and principles Dr. Hinman established over 100 years ago. Sylvia is truly one of a kind and an invaluable resource to the society. Some of our Past General Chairmen that have worked closely with her reminisce about their experiences with Sylvia over the past 20 years...

I have lectured and worked with most every dental meeting worldwide and have never found anyone as capable as Sylvia. She is a shining example of the consummate executive director. No doubt Sylvia has helped make the Hinman Meeting the number one favorite among invited clinicians. It is a credit to her many skills that she has worked so well with all the present and past chairmen, plus she has assembled and trained an amazing and talented staff of co-workers. Although Sylvia is really creative in her own right, she is also a great listener and fast to adapt to new ideas and techniques. I feel we are so fortunate to have had her leadership over the past 20 years and I hope for many, many more…she is truly our Hinman Jewel!”– Ronald Goldstein

Sylvia is the most professional person with whom I’ve ever had the pleasure to work. Her dedication, talents, attitude, and ability to get along with everyone are unsurpassed. She is simply one of the finest people I know and I’m extremely proud to call her my friend. Congratulations on twenty great years of the “Best Hinmans Ever!”– Robert Towe

We also asked Sylvia a few questions about her experiences working with the society…

What has been the most enjoyable part of working for Hinman over your 20-year tenure?

Without a doubt – the people! The members and staff have supported, challenged, acknowledged, assisted, appreciated and worked with me to maintain and, hopefully, grow Hinman’s reputation as the best dental meeting in the country. It’s an honor to have made 20 new friends with each of the General Chairmen.

HINMAN’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SYLVIA RATCHFORD, CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH HINMAN

Sylvia speaks to the attendees of the 2016 closing reception in the Omni atrium.

What have been some of the biggest changes you have experienced in the meeting or society while you have been here?

The biggest changes have all been the result of technology. Most are good (website, online registration) and some have created more challenges (online CE offerings and distance learning that offer alternatives to in-person meetings).

What have you learned through working at Hinman and with a large group of dentists?

Working here has increased my understanding and appreciation for the critical role that associations and societies fill. There is no end in sight to the goals we set to improve the quality and increase the quantity of continuing education that we provide. Learning does not take place in the classroom alone. The on-site experiences, the social interaction, the peer-to-peer networking and the mentoring opportunities are many. The society structure, with the volunteer members who strive for the best, continues to provide these opportunities.

What are some of your favorite memories or events at Hinman?

I have great memories from all 20 years and each of the respective General Chairmen! Some of the highlights include a meeting with record-breaking attendance or revenue, the 100th anniversary year-long celebration topped off with the Annual Meeting Cruise and, surprisingly, the 2008 tornado. While it might sound strange to include a natural disaster, that event was such an amazing demonstration of the heart of Hinman. There were members, officers and chairmen who stayed up all night and worked with our staff for the next week to take care of speakers, attendees and exhibitors. It was Hinman at its finest.

Thank you, Sylvia, for your passion, service and dedication to the Hinman Dental Society!

The Temporomandibular Joint – The Foundation of the Masticatory System

The lecture is designed to help dentist and auxiliary personnel better understand the signs and symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and how to recognize when a patient may be suffering from damage to their TMJs. The use of MRI and CT scans in gaining a correct diagnosis will be discussed as well as treatment options for the patients who suffer from TMD.
