PlatoIn 370 B.C. Plato wrote his most famous

work, The Republic.Inside, it explained his views of a perfect

society. In his opinion, perfect societies weren’t

democracies. This society really depended on social

class structure, and people would fall into 3 different groups: farmers and artisans, warriors, and the ruling class.

There was also a philosopher-king. The philosopher-king was chosen if the person had the most wisdom in philosophy in the ruling class.

Plato was similar to Socrates and Aristotle because Socrates was his mentor, and Aristotle was his student.

Plato also explained that there were 2 different worlds: the Sensible World and the World of the Ideas.

The Sensible World: a world filled with personal realities that are constantly changing.

The World of the Ideas: a world filled with eternal realities that are permanent and never change.

The eternal ideas are called “Forms”. These forms did exist, and were independent outside of us.

Plato

cont…

Plato founded the very famous school in Athens, the Academy.

This is where Aristotle was taught. Plato recorded the conversations him and

Socrates had before Socrates’ death. He based his ideas off of Socrates, and

showed the importance of knowledge and happiness.

Plato soon wrote many of the dialogues and interpreted that the ideas were a part of important concepts at the time.

In his middle years of teaching, the dialogues represented the relationship between the soul, the state, and the cosmos.

Near the end of his teaching, the analysis on the dialogues were much more practical and realistic. He wrote about law, mathematics, and natural science.

He believed in a Demiurge and a world soul.
